1. Construction tends to pay better than design
Starting salaries for construction project engineers or construction field engineers in Hawaii are around 60k-90k for just a fresh out of college entry level engineer. What I've typically seen is that civil engineering design salaries are roughly $10k less. However there is a lot of time commitment and stress that comes with a career in the construction industry, so overall you probably have to work harder for that salary.
2. A career in construction engineering helps you with real estate investing
Working in construction management and engineering you understand value. Also being a part of the industry you get to get early access to developing areas and can connect with developers who specialize in monetizing real estate and profiting on property values.
3. A career in construction engineering can help with your renovations
Renovations are always a headache and having that background in construction really helps the process. One, you are aware of how the process needs to be built and what the contractor should be doing. Two, if you form relationships with the workers, they may be willing to help you at a discount. Three you can't be taken advantage of by your contractor because you know all the rules to the game and it just gives you more leverage.
4. A career in construction engineering can help with future opportunities.
Because the construction industry is so far reaching, if you don't like the life of general contracting, starting there will open you up to countless opportunities. What I typically see is that people don't like the hours, but like the industry, so they find a job at a smaller firm or working for a supplier just to remain there but have a better lifestyle that suits their needs.
5. A career in construction engineering can help you get the experience to start your own business.
Maybe because I'm not in tune with all businesses, but I feel like you really get opportunities to understand and learn how the construction business is run as just an employee. You get to make some risky decisions and learn how to protect the company. It is good to get these lessons out of the way before you go out on your own.
