The Biblical story of Abraham's decision to sacrifice Isaac has posed a great moral dilemma for Christians and New Atheists such as Richard Dawkins cite it as a prime example of the immorality of religion and, by extension, of the God that religion turns to for moral guidance.
Hamza Karamali explains why the Quranic version of the story poses no ethical dilemma at all but rather gives an inspiring example of love for a kind, generous, and loving God.
The summary of the video is that slaughtering children is, indeed, an outrageous crime.
But God knew that His command would never actually be realized, and He only commanded Abraham so that both he and his son could express their love by choosing the God who they knew loved them, choosing Him over everything else.
The entire story in the Quran is full of love and mercy between father and son, and their complete trust in God's kindness.
There us no cruelty, no bloodthirstiness, no harshness in sight anywhere.
And it's all to highlight an act of love could not have been realized except in this way.
This video cites the following passages from the Quran:
' “ O my Lord ! grant me A righteous (son) !” So We gave him The good news Of a boy ready To suffer and forbear. Then, when (the son) Reached (the age of) (Serious) work with him, He said : “ O my son ! I see in vision That I offer thee in sacrifice : Now see what is Thy view !” (The son) said : “ O my father ! Do As thou art commanded : Thou will find me, If God so wills one Practicing Patience and Constancy !” So when they had both Submitted their wills (to God), And he had laid him Prostrate on his forehead (For sacrifice), We called out to him, “ O Abraham ! “ Thou hast already fulfilled The vision !”-thus indeed Do We reward Those who do right. For this was obviously A trial- And We ransomed him With a momentous sacrifice : And We left (this blessing) For him among generations (To come) in later times : ' (Quran 37: 100-108)
' “ Who created me, and It is He who guides me ; “ Who gives me food and drink, “ And when I am ill, It is He who cures me ; “ Who will cause me to die, And then to live (again) ; “ And who, I hope, Will forgive me my faults On the Day of Judgment…O my Lord ! bestow wisdom On me, and join me With the righteous ; ' (Quran 26: 78-83)
