If you were in charge of a stage adaptation of Across the Universe, what would you change?

I think I would give the main five a song, Help! to replace the "Day In The Life" sequence, to emphasize that being together as friends and lovers is important to each of them, despite the conflicts they go through

I am baffled as to why "Across the Universe" failed at the box office. (It's genius!) Excuse me. I really don't mean criticism. I truly enjoyed your analysis. Thank you for making this video. I must comment, however, that you barely mentioned some of the most beautifully crafted scenes. (Personally, I don't find the "Sgt. Pepper" movie even worth mentioning at all.) Some of the most breathtakingly gorgeous scenes, for me, include: The gospel/funeral "Let It Be" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." "I Want You/She's So Heavy" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The opening scene on the beach featuring "Girl" and the early 1960s charm of "I've Just Seen a Face," and the way "Hold Me Tight" leads right into into "All My Loving." Exquisitely done stuff!

I would have to guess that the failure at the box office was probably something to do with poor marketing. They had some celebrity cameos, but no big names in the main cast. I think it had a pretty limited release too. I don't think the studio had much faith in it. As for why I didn't talk about everything I loved in every scene, that would have just been an in-depth review, not a video essay, and I tend to keep my film reviews brief and spoiler free. I chose the essay title "Why Across the Universe Succeeded Where the Sgt Pepper Film Failed" because people frequently chalk up the failure of Sgt Pepper to "it didn't have the Beatles in", and I wanted to make it clear that it wasn't the case. It's also an opinion that most naysayers of Across the Universe would still agree with, which I thought would be interesting. Also, thanks for commenting! It's a reminder that I should edit together my Sgt Pepper and Across the Universe video essays into one video as originally intended at some point.

Joe Cocker's version of Come Together. That one for just the music of it. The other best one I think is Helter Skelter. Did you notice that the protective detail and the protectees were all singing "Nothings gonna change my world" when they walked out into the protest?

Initially I didn't like the Eddie Izzard sequence but, on subsequent viewings, I loved it. I think if you approach it with a sense of fun, it really works. I like the film for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. I prefer some of the versions of songs to those of even the Beatles, particularly ones by Evan Rachel Wood. One thing you didn't mention (maybe for time?) was the fact that Sadie looks like Janice Joplin, and Jo Jo looks like Jimi Hendrix. I would highly recommend the film, especially for Beatles' fans.

I totally agree about Eddie Izzard. Film should cut from I Am The Walrus to Because and the only loss would have been a minor character rejoining the cast.

Yeah. It's not that this section added nothing (the whole expanding their minds and becoming hippies thing feels like an important part of their story as the personification of the youth movement) they could have done that in one song, 2 tops. Thanks for watching!

Fair, but I wouldn't say it had bad vocal performances either (as long as we're not counting Eddie Izzard's attempt at Rex Harrisoning it). Apart from Jim Sturgess, whose voice was serviceable, the core cast all had amazing voices

Being in highschool, almost 8 years ago, my daughter and 2 other friends went to their schoolmaster to get autorization to stage Across the Universe as a student made project. It was a very small production funden by the kids selling cakes on lunch brakes, but it was wonderfull. Greetings from Buenos Aires. PS. I'd like to say that the movies Let it Be was of the best musical moments. I believe I love that version of the song better than the original.

Well, to begin with I was not a Beatles fan and I didn't really care for musicals. I picked up the movie on whim in the video rental store because it was set in the time when I was growing up and found that all that didn't matter. I consider it one of the finest movies ever made. I grew up in a town 60 miles from Detroit. A friend of my parents was a part-time policeman. He was called up to go to Detroit to try and stop the race riots. He wouldn't talk about it, afterwards except to say, "They were so angry and they wouldn't listen to us." The year after I got out of high school, while I was waiting to see if I was going to be drafted, two friends I grew up with were killed in Vietnam. The way the interwove the funeral of the little black boy and the soldier killed in the war brought it all back to me. I found myself crying. The scene at the draft board in no way resembled what I experienced and it summed up the process of being drafted exactly. I had to pause the film and take deep breaths. Dealing with addiction brought back my time in the hospital and trying to stop smoking. This movie sums up my generation. I think the reason this film failed financially was nobody knew how to market it or who to market it to. I didn't even know it existed when it came out and only found it for rent a decade later. I think they tried to market it to young people when they should have been aiming it at the Vietnam war generation. Every friend I have shown it to has loved it.

You compliment Across the Universe by saying it was written by actual writers, but then when you explain the plot, it's just a series of random events. It's the type of plot where "this happens, then this happens, then this happens." Major plot events don't happen based on cause and effect, but rather, it's all spontaneous. Every piece of plot is to get us to the next music video.
@EnchantedEssays

I agree that the plot is also episodic (especially the trippy stuff I mentioned), but it's better anchored with it's characters. They are archetypical, but they aren't trying to reinvent the wheel here. In the Sgt Pepper movie, the characters are both written and played like cardboard cut outs! Neither are masterpieces. I'm just explaining why this one is considered better. I'm happy to see that my video engaged you enough to comment! I love to start conversations with people who disagree with me! ☺

Love this video! You deserve way more followers with the quality of your content! Would also love to hear you gush more about this movie, cause I absolutely love it as well. For songs, I love I've Just Seen A Face, Because, Strawberry Fields, and the finale of All You Need is Love! I agree that Mr. Kite is terrible in this, even though I love Ms. Izzard (though I do enjoy her "tune in tune out drop off and explode" ramble in the middle. I have to disagree about Come Together though, I just really dislike it, I can't even vocalize why, it just rubs me wrong. Also think Let It Be is super heavy-handed, and like the whole movie is heavyhanded and I love it for that but something about that one is just so blah. Keep up the amazing work!
