I think the issue is that Health Ledger perfectly captured the joker as someone with the ultimate dark twisted sense of humor who thrives on chaos. It's difficult to tap into that. Phoenix does a good job showing how someone could be driven to madness and murder, but I could not imagine the Phoenix joker pulling off any of the heists or things that the Ledger joker does. They are different characters by the same name.

You can see it towards the end though. He spent his whole life being ignored and questions whether he's even real. When he's in the police car watching all the chaos that is directly caused by him, he's ecstatic. He affected the world in such a huge way, and in the end everybody is looking at him. So, I could see him getting addicted to causing chaos, and thriving on it.

If I were to rank the actors I would go with 1. Joaquin Phoenix: I know I know Ledger is everyone's favorite but watching the physical brutality Joaquin put himself through when he was preparing is just astonishing, the body language throughout the film is a treat to watch and having him on screen the whole time really helped 2. Heath Ledger: One of the greatest performances in film history, Heath did incredible and nailed the mental side of things where as Joaquin nailed the physical side 3. Jack Nicholson: Brought a proper dark side to the character as well as seriousness which forever shaped the future of the Joker as a film character 4. Mark Hamil: I know he only did voice acting but in terms of an animated Joker no one does it quite like Hamil but I'm also glad it stays as just a vocal preformance because I don't think he would do physically very well for the character 5. Jared Leto: Only thing saving this preformance is the fact that Jared took the role seriously and the movie took the character seriously 6. Cesar Romero: I'm sorry but this preformance was beyond ridiculous and can't be looked at seriously

Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, and David Bowie would have been a very interesting joker. Look at the way Joaquin took on the role, he gave us a very real performance on the fact that society can make you go mad and get you to your breaking point. And Heath Ledger was on a whole other level. I think what makes joker one of the best characters of all time is that whoever is portraying him, can make him unique. He’s such a flexible character so it’s cool to see how writers and actors will break the boundaries for him. I’d rather see Jared Leto portraying his version of the joker than see him try to copy Heath or anyone else for that matter. The reason why Phoenix didn't go further into manic depression as a result from shooting the Joker film was because Todd Phillips,the director,was cracking jokes and goofing off with him behind the scenes. Although Romero's Joker was played for 'camp' and usually not taken (very) seriously, he was actually quite remarkable in the context of the TV show. The darkness was usually camouflaged with some over-the-top visual joke... Like when Joker escaped jail by blowing up another inmate with explosives during a baseball game to distract from his being launched over the prison wall to 'freedom'. In the current movies that scene would have been Horrific..! I also think the choice of just painting over his moustache was inspired Badass...

@IncoherentSchizo
4 жыл бұрын
@@OpportunisticHunter I think you are partially right but in a lot of movies, especially with high profile actors like jared leto, there is more freedom given to how the character looks given that their performance is affected by how they act and vice versa. In lower profile films with lower profile actors, you might be right, but when you have a bigger name to put on the poster, naturally they are a bigger element and can sometimes make or break a movie. So it makes sense to cater to them a bit more. But there is a lot of elements to this kind of decision though with a key factor being the contract negotiated and how the actor's manager worked the details in. Another big factor in this decision is the director/producer since the director can also leverage their infamy against the actor depending on the directors personality. I agree to an extent with what you are saying, but I just wanted to add on since it is not so cut and dry.

@@Mr_Shadow085 Uh ... the Joker ends up shooting Gordon's daughter (Batgirl), taking her clothes off, and taking pictures of it just to terrorize Gordon (in the Killing Joke). He also tortures Gordon quite a bit later in the comic. Though if I'm not mistaken, that was all just to get to Batman.

I wish we could of gotten another Joker movie from Ledger. I want to know how he got them scars! Batman interrupts him when he’s about the tell us another version and uggh I wanna know! His Joker is just so mysterious and deserved more exploration. It’s like he embodied the character better than the character embodies himself. Unexplainably amazing🤯

It is an incredible tragedy. The original script of The Dark Knight Rises had Ledger's Joker as a very central villain, with Bane most likely working for him. That movie might have been better than The Dark Knight, who knows?

A GREAT FILM TO WATCH to show his versatility!!! IM STILL HERE. that and Eslk the line are great examples of how Phoenix can TRULY IMMERSE himself into a role and TRULY become that individual! He and his brother River are 2 of the greatest of all time! (Bless and rest poor River's soul. The night he passed away at the Viper Room.... Flea from RHCP was there and actually rode in the ambulance tot he hospital with River) I still remember the night that happened! 💔💔💔💔😔😔😔😇😇

I remember in the 'The Dark Knight' when the Joker starts telling his 'wanna know how I got these scars' story for the 2nd time and for a moment I was thinking 'this is BS, the same story again wtf'. Then when I saw where he was going I was like this, is it? That's something he added to the role by himself.

Define "Healthy"? I agree that we should definitely put pressure on actors to allow them to "become who they are meant to be". The proverbial "diamond" so to speak. We don't, however, want to crush them either if they're coal do we? Unless that coal means that they were never meant to be that role, or an actor even.

*It's amazing how the villains we used to see as pure evil are now getting their own live-action movie. My view of the Joker was of Jack Nicholson, an inexplicable evil, just sadistic, evil crimes. Joaquin Phoenix changed that. Villains are definitely more charismatic than heroes for many reasons. So he's not a "cursed" character, just a character that can exist and that's what causes fear.*

Those “disgusting gifts” Jared Leto sent were dead hogs, porno mags, used condoms, etc. I mean neither joker actor before and after him did anything to violate their costars the way he did, and look at how successfully they’ve embodied the joker. Heath Ledger is the best Joker when it comes to Villainy. Joaquin's Joker had mental issues which largely made his character sympathetic to the audience. Jared Leto's had more comic vibe and though not the best but he was good for the Suicide Squad universe. Heath's joker got all the adulation without the character showing one bit of sympathetic tones. He is menacing and powerful and people were in awe of that power. ❤️
