@@FinneousPJ1 Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Dillahunty, all use the same presuppositional straw man approach when debating religious figures. Take belief in God, make a juxtaposed argument to some bad actor, who had belief in god, equate bad acts to god belief, bingo-bango, religion is bad. Religious figures do the same exact technique when arguing against secular humanism. Hitler was an atheist; therefore, atheism and atheists are bad. (This argument is fallacious on the surface - which is what makes it a strawman approach). “I’m not going to address what you say, I’m going to attack something else.” I am simply stating that the approach of the atheist’s is the same. None are that concerned with consciousness and where it comes from, and more the point where it resides - except for maybe Harris, who has a more mindfulness approach than the others. The rest are solely out to rail against religion. They will arise at some hyperbolic place where ‘I don’t know, and that’s okay’ is typically used to just explain away key tenets of the human experience. I am in no way saying what they are implying is wrong - just that, these many debates will have their assumed winners based on the predisposition of the audience. Harris is not going to make a compelling enough argument to convert areligious people, en masse after one debate. Just as Lennox won’t convert, in masse, a group of Secularists to Christianity after one debate. Sure, there may be a few, but I’m talking a lot. KZitem is an echo chamber of ideas and can generally find like-minded individuals to latch on to.

I don't struggle with faith which isn't to say that I have all the answers to my questions..I still, in many ways struggle with why God allows certain kinds of pain and suffering but I know there was reason for the pain and suffering of Christ on the cross so that's where my mind goes when I see suffering that "seems" arbitrary. I think the Christian faith, the Bible has the best explanatory reasons why the world is the way it is in terms of humanity and its fallen nature...also, there's so much to sift through ie the laws of logic, the laws of physics, the moral law, the eye witness testimony of Scripture, the historisity of Jesus of Nazareth..it really is a cumulative case. Lastly, since neither God nor evolution can be proved we rely on inference to come to the best conclusion..so even atheists have faith. Faith is only as good as the object in which it's placed. If we consider all the aforementioned God is incomprehesively great..beyond what we can apprehend about Him in regard to all of those things..so I think the Christian has the best reasons for placing their faith in Christ...I could go on with respect to having an eternal perspective on life..and on and on..

I'm glad you are hearing the case out Salty Dodger, (if that is your real name). Many of the 'new atheists' are antagonistic, but I think that arrogance has proven to be bad for them. The thing is, they are really coming from an 'I don't know' position, but acting like 'know it alls'. They have reasons for doubt. Ok. It's understandable. Doubts and a willingness to hear go a long way, and you seem like you may be that way. If so, great. It takes time as the case for God and Christianity is immense and you may have barely scratched the surface. At times the most searching sceptics become strong defenders of the faith, like CS Lewis and J Warner Wallace more recently (a top notch detective bringing excellent angles on the subject. He's online and in books.) So if you don't mind running that risk, good for you. A hope for an eternity of love, joy and peace, beats out resting in peace forever, in my book. (Which doesn't compare with Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell.) Here's some other things you could find here on KZitem. Videos by Dr James Tour and Dr Stephen C Meyers, Dr William Lane Craig for the Moral argument and others. Biblical archeology is proven again and again, most especially around the burnt peak of Mt Sinai in Saudi Arabia, (maybe check out Ryan Mauro's video and see the monolithic split Rock of Moses with its water erosion and many, many other Biblically correlating sites.), the Red Sea Crossing with its Egyptian size and style wheels in the sea corals and so on, is incredible Shall I keep going? There's the vast issue of the prophecies Christ fulfilled. Did you know that Dr Michael Brown never lost a debate with Jewish scholars? It's because of the case and his knowledge of it. Amazing subject, strong in giving faith as fulfilling the miraculous trends to be. Which leads to the resurrection. No shortage of those videos, as it is vital. While our extra Biblical evidence for Christ from the first century increases to solidify with new finds, the people want physical forensic evidence. Have you studied the Shroud? How about the incredibly matching headcloth of Christ in Oviedo. Even the blood type matches with the Shroud, AB. Also the Shroud tested positive for Bilirubin which comes from torture. Amazingly the crown of thorns plant pollen from early Jerusalem is still on the Shroud, but just the start of that evidence. Near Death Experiences are fascinating. Modern miracles in Mozambique are truly powerful, and PhD tested before and after prayer. Astonishing results! Yet there are so many more healings in Jesus name occurring there. But beyond all these things and much more, there is the spiritual birth given you by God. "His Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.", Paul said. "God is Spirit" so really the issue is a spiritual one. Ultimately that is where He will make Himself known to you. Do you want Him to? I hope this helps. I'll pray for you.

I see the fine tuning argument that Justin believes in as an argument from incredulity. Our primitive (although many would deny that) and severely limited cognitive powers are enough for Christians to feel certain they have found *the* answer to everything? Please. Everything that belief provides an answer to the Christian can be explained by the only type of reality we have- naturalism. There is no precedence for existence of a supernatural reality. Just because we honestly, humbly say the truth which is ‘we don’t know’ does not then mean,God. I have not seen nor heard anything from reading, listening to hours of Christian debate, which compels me to believe what I consider to be a problematic, contradictory, error-filled, at times fraudulent, and pedestrian story. This series of books is supposed to represent magnificence beyond comprehension? Please.

The first argument can be easily dismissed by this: If the christian god is omnipotent then he can do whatever he wants i.e. if he wanted us to live on the sun then he would have made it so. The speaker tries to dip into both supernaturalism and naturalism. If the christian god is omnipotent you don't need exact conditions 'cause as we can read in the bible people were raised fron the dead and even donkeys could speak! So natural conditions as we know it are not an impediment for the christian god. 2.Regarding the rape issue and "morality". what about slavery? killing homosexuals? stoning your children for misbehaving? don't those also raise that "feeling of wrongness"? Yet they are condoned and commanded by the christian god. 3. The argument is framed from a binary point of view. Is christianity the only religion in the world? That "feeling" has also been fulfilled by other religious and non-spiritual believe systems. That feeling seems to be a place holder for a belief system (atheistic, theistic and everything in between), not necessarily christianity. Love the show!!

Justin, i'm disappointed. I'm an atheist, I listened to you, at the beginning you hyped me and I was hoping to finally hear actual good and sound arguments for the existence of God. But instead, you came out with the over-used already debunked fallacies. The fine-tuned argument is beautiful, but is not a good argument (look up "fine-tuned argument debunked" to know how). We cannot calculate the probabilities, and we don't know if our Universe is the only one that exists (or have existed). The morality argument is also a fallacy. It has also been debunked many times. We have empathy, which is explained by evolution, and there is no need for God for that. For the 3rd argument (argument from purpose), well, the Universe is under no obligation to make sense to you. Everyone chooses their own purpose, and that's it. Our short life on Earth has much more meaning and purpose if there is only this one, compared to what it would worth in comparison with eternal life. More generally, the rest is arguments from personal incredulity ("i don't understand that, therefore it's God"), from ignorance ("i don't know how that is possible, therefore it's God") and other bad arguments. You wanted to bring good things to the conversation. But all you have said is the same fallacies we have heard over and over. What's worse is that you incite your fellow Christians to use these arguments. Do you realize that if they do that they will be seen as ridiculous? Why give them fallacies if you want them to have useful debates? WHY don't you present good arguments? It would be a win-win for everyone!

II came to Christianity through science. When I find an inscription in the sand I think it's common sense to think a human wrote it, whereas a militant atheist would believe that crabs and sea motion over the millennia wrote that single phrase. It simply doesn't make sense. As a former atheist, former agnostic, and now a believer in Christ I sincerely thank the new atheists who with their so-far futile attempts to debunk the Christian faith and replace it with their naturalistic and irrational faith make my faith in GOD and Christ stronger because it is based on firmer ground. And for this, I must deeply thank Justin Brierley and the precious debates he hosts in his show that compare the two worldviews.

You may have some familiarity with science, but your logic is abominable. When you find writing in the sand you know it for what it is because you've seen writing before many times and you know how it is made. Your "common sense" about that is nothing but accumulated experience. Please tell us about your travels to other universes which you saw many universes being made by a god or gods, that informs you that this universe was similarly designed and made. If the entire universe was necessarily designed by a god, then we have no examples to look at of something that wasn't so designed, and therefore no way to tell the difference between the two.

@@yekatyaap548 do not be surprised. Science, in the first place, has been a product of the Christian world view that there was a design to be discovered in nature. Greeks believed in the logos and not in the fact that there were natural laws to be discovered through guided experiments. Justin seems to be a really nice guy but his logic is very doubtful. He presents 3 arguments for theism but they are seriously flawed: 1) the fine tuning of the universe proves god. Better minds than Justin’s like Einstein and Stephen Hawking understand the universe profoundly but conclude atheism. What’s Justin expertise in this field? 2) the natural dignity of people proves god. He gives the example of Bogota police assassinating street children. Big problem: Bogota is the capital of Columbia, an incredibly religious country with well over 90% Christians. Where’s Christian dignity? Look at most religious countries notably those in the Middle East, central and South America and compare them to the most secular countries like Japan, Norway, Sweden, etc. It’s obvious which places value human dignity more. 3) life has purpose therefore god. But ultimately he offers zero evidence of this purpose. And zero evidence for this god. Nice try Justin but maybe you should listen more to your atheist guests. The supernatural god you believe in is as fantastic as witches, talking snakes, angels and those other many superstitions from biblical history. It’s like your three arguments - entirely wishful thinking.

The Christian "story" may be compelling to Christians, but frankly, there are countless stories that are far more interesting. Jesus was an intolerably tedious fellow. Zeus, for example, was far more lively. I don't see why Christians feel compelled to defend their faith, unless, of course, their faith is brittle. Christians can believe what they want. But they should stop haranguing atheists about Jesus' nonsense and, more to the point, they should stop demanding social perquisites for their churches and schools. Atheists are fine with a life "without purpose" and the "reduction of life to atoms." That doesn't make life less fascinating or less worthwhile. Christians have their views and we atheists have ours, even though the evidence clearly favours naturalism. I'm not sure how a Christian type God explains anything at all about life. If the odds of us being here are astronomical, imagine the odds that 1) a bearded God has been floating around in the ether 2) this bearded God decides after infinite years to create earth and 3) he and he alone creates, by the stroke of his magical wand, EVERYTHING that we as humans experience throughout our lives and throughout the history of this universe. The odds are so strongly against this possibility that it is in fact an IMPOSSIBILITY. As for ethics and dignity, philosophy has perfect ethical systems that cover all ethical/moral eventualities. The notion that we have human values because we are made in the image of some "Lord" is nonsense. The fact that God would send his son to earth to be killed for our sins is absolutely the most ridiculous concept ever created by humankind. To close, if one feels the need to posit and worship a God, so be it. But God is a product of the human mind. Some people need him in their lives. Most don't.

Compensatory fantasies have real utility. They protect the mind from harsh realities and give meaning and purpose where there might be none. Religion organizes thoughts and emotions around beliefs that cannot be falsified, protecting them from the intrusions of an often vague and indifference reality. The danger of these fantasies is that they divorce the mind from reality and force a worldview willing to accept ideas not based on falsifiable evidence but experience and desires. Our nascent ego-centrism is difficult to overcome, and often leads our minds to think existence is centered on us. It is no surprise god is described as a 'father' and his faithful 'children'. At the core of religion seems to be a need to satisfy the inner child unwilling to accept this material, godless reality.

With the christian values and beliefs. What makes your monotheistic religion true compared to other monotheistic religions, for me that is the biggest question that needs to be addressed. Why choose christianity over islam for example? Christians shouldn't be reduced to people who believe in a designer right? They believe in a specific god.
@hhstark8663

I can understand that it is overwhelming in the beginning to filter out the djungle of religions, so let me lend a helping hand. :) These are the three greatest reasons for why Christianity rises above other religions: 1. The account in Genesis is in alignment with modern cosmology. The other mythological accounts are NOT in alignment with modern cosmology. (see "Science and Creation" by Stanley Jaki for more information). 2. Pantheistic polytheism says that their gods are *internal* of time and space. This is NOT in alignment with modern cosmology. Theism in monotheism says that god is *external* of time and space, which is in alignment with modern cosmology. Now, you have narrowed it down to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Islam is false because of the islamic dilemma (qurannic dilemma) and judaism is false because of isaia 53 (among others) in the Old Testament. (see Michael Brown´s "Answering jewish objections about jesus" and "Mohammed did not exist" by Robert Spencer if you want more information). This leaves Christianity. If the resurrection is true, Jesus is the Son of God (for real) and everything he said is true. 3. The historical evidence for the resurrection is overwhelming. I can recommend "The case for the resurrection of Jesus" by the former agnostic and world-expert historian Gary Habermas and "The resurrection of Jesus: a new historiographical approach" by former agnostic historian Mike Licona. (And no, the resurrection is NOT copied from pagan myths. The legend-hypothesis was popular during the 19th century, but has since been rejected by academic historians. The channel "Inspiring Philosophy" goes through this in great detail. He is a former atheist. "Testify" is also a useful channel.)

The only reason the second one SEEMS less likely is that some people unconsciously attach meaning to repetition (and the number six, in fact). @@JMUDoc you can ask astrophysicists or go an learn astrophysics and find out about the origins of the universe or just google the damn thing like i did and learn about it. The Big Bang theory is currently the most accepted theory on the origins of the universe based on our information and the more we advance in observational technology the more we learn about it. The james webb telescope launch is a promise to give us more answers about the big bang when it launches so google that if you want to know what we as a species are doing to learn more about the origins of everything among other things. Do you even understand what reality is ? I liked the talk about having a neutral place of dialogue for people of differing beliefs, but the fine tuning argument video was a bit ridiculous. You have no idea what the probability of the universe having some particular expansion rate versus another was. Conditional probability can be tricky when it comes to reversing the given proposition and the proposition whose probability you're interested in. Edit: I also wanted to add that the end of the video is flawed too. You don't have to believe in a specific alternative (like infinitely many universes) just because you don't believe there's a God who made the universe. You can simply withhold judgment until something specific (even if that thing is God) is properly demonstrated. Many people who call themselves atheists (including myself) would have this withholding judgment position, making us agnostic atheists.

Yes. It's so frustrating. But I guess if you have no option but to strawman, a strawman it is.
@@familyhamann9727 So the argument is "The odds of us being here in this way are extremely small, therefore it's more likely that we were put here on purpose". I apologize for the long post, but you asked for it ;) 1. The first, and most damning argument that debunks this is simple; it's a fallacious argument from incredulity. "I cannot believe the chances of it happening at random! It must have been a god!". The LIKELYHOOD of a past event tells you nothing about the CAUSE of that event (assuming there even was a cause). This is completely ridiculous because you can't even put a NUMBER on the likelihood of an intelligent creator. Even if it was 10x more unlikely that the expansion occurred at the rate it did, that wouldn't be positive evidence for the case of a god. It would ONLY be evidence that what happened was unlikely. For example, if I actually did roll a dice however many times and get 6 every time, that wouldn't be evidence that i am a god, or anything else... i could only conclude that what had just happened was unlikely. Adding a god is the largest possible logical leap. 2. Another logical fallacy. It has a few different names, but I call it a false dichotomy. They're basically saying either a) it happened by chance, or b) it was designed to be so. What if there's a natural source (such as gravity) that made an expansion like the big bang to be inevitable? What if there's thousands of options we're not even smart enough to consider? How can you possibly know that it's either A or B? 3. The statistics in themselves are a little bit misleading. For those of you who DON'T know, the statistics are specifically about the RATE of the Universe expanding. If it were any faster or slower, the argument goes, we wouldn't be here. This is where I like to point of the flaw in this reasoning by presenting the puddle analogy. If rain falls in a dip in the concrete, the puddle might be tempted to think "Wow, what are the chances that rain fell in this exact hole?" The puddle may even back up this argument with statistics, saying that the likelihood of the atoms forming in that specific location, at that specific time were extremely unlikely. Well, guess what. If the rain DIDN'T fall at that time/location, the puddle wouldn't exist to have such thoughts. We're here, the expansion rate happened to be favorable for us, but that doesn't mean anything. 4. The whole point of this argument is to add to the 'fine tuning' argument-- that is that the universe seems intentionally designed. This is ridiculous (assuming that the person presenting the argument thinks the universe is fine tuned for HUMANS) because the Earth has been around for billions of years before we even existed. Only 4 percent of the known universe is MATTER, and the Earth takes up 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000003 percent of that matter. Why in the fucking world would a God create alllllllll that useless shit JUST so he can create this one specific species on this one specific planet billions of years after that planet is born in bumfuck nowhere? TL;DR: It's been debunked because it's an argument from incredulity, a false dichotomy, a misleading use of statistics, and also it in no way serves as even an inkling of evidence for why people believe in a personal god that created the universe specifically to tell humans not to eat shellfish. I actually had a few more reasons why this argument is bullshit, but I already typed up a book, so I'll spare you the additional reading. Kudos to you if you actually stuck around, I'd like to hear your take on what I think.

Just a few thoughts I had on your objections. 1) How is atheism not a worldview? Separate from agnosticism, atheism is a positive belief that God does not exist ("positive" as in making a specific assertion, not that you're positive God doesn't exist); can you explain how you don't think this involves looking at the world through that lens? 2) I am sure you would have saved the kids, too! But your irreligiosity doesn't undo the idea that our basic moral precepts are explained by Christianity as a worldview; the point isn't that unbelievers can't do moral things, but simply that our bred-in moral absolutes (good AND depraved) come from an objective supernatural reality. 3) The Euthyphro Dilemma is an intriguing topic, but the answer for Christianity is known! God's inherent goodness and character come from His nature; His commands are good because He is good, so he's not subject to any outside moral impetus (in fact, morality is relative to Him). And questions about immorality commanded by God are not of concern; whether or not rape or any other immoral thing would be laudable if He commanded them are like discussing square circles, as He would never do such things.

No matter how small the odds, no matter how complex it looks, to proof the existence af (a) God, you need to positively find exactly that; proof. Without it, it all comes down to the fallacy of ignorance; we don't know, so it must have been a God. Replace 'God' for 'The great Gardener up the Mountain' and your argument is equally valid, ie. not. As an atheist I have meaningful conversations with religious people who do not have the desire to proof that God exists. They can't proof that he does, I can't proof that he doesn't. They just believe and have faith, which to me is much stronger than trying to convince me that he exists. Trying to prove his existence is anti- believe and faith and only weakens the religious position. O ye of little faith!

When you look at the comments here, you see hostility and extreme sarcasm towards people of faith. Ironically if you really look at what athiest believe and what they intrepret as their world view, you find an absolute truth. That is: to be an Athiest actually requires more blind faith than it takes to believe in God. Atheist believe in many things that no one has ever seen before, yet they criticize others for believing in God as blind faith. Yet they have no idea what people that pray to God experience in their lifes nor have many of them even tried to seek God just to know for themselves wether God is there or not, on a personal level. If you are one of those people, you really dont have the superior logic you think you have. You are literally just believing in what someone told you is true and even that person is making assumptions.

You receive harsh criticism because you make unsubstantiated claims about atheists. What evidence will you present that demonstrates that atheism requires more "blind faith it takes to believe in God?" This will be a simple, straightforward question, yet you will avoid answering it. Watch! Atheism doesn't require any faith, or even any belief, at all. This is because it is a position taken on one thing only, the unsubstantiated claim that gods exist. Atheism is simply the practice of suspending the acknowledgement of the existence of gods until sufficient evidence can be presented. Why is that such a threat to you? It is natural, rational and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstatiated claims, especially extraordinary ones.

I truly appreciate that the host values civil discourse with people who think differently. That is generally not my experience with theist. My more common experience is threats on my well being. So good on you. But the primary things he fails to talk about about his innaccurate representations or strawmen of atheists and his innaccrate representstion that there is equal ground for theism as well as atheism. As done by most theists they dont understand atheism and present their arguments against something that doesnt exist and claim goodness when their argument succeeds. It is not an argument when the other side is not real. And his argument that both share equal and valid ground is wrong. No theist has ever come up with proof of god that amounts to anything more than this is how you want to feel. Most atheists come from religious backgrounds. We know intimately both sides of the argument. We dont have a strawman for what theist believe. We know it by your words, your actions, your beliefs, your holy texts and that we lived that life. Most have spent decades working it out and deconstructing. It is a painful process to slwoly realize what you were told, what you believe is not real. But like most people, when faced with truth, regardless of how painful it is, we must face it. And most atheists do not say there is no god. We believe that so far no evidence has been brought forth that proves that one exists. Most atheists, like myself are waiting for proof. Not the false apologetics arguments. Again, i appreciate his humor and wit and his, at least on the surface, willingness to engage in dialog with those that disagree with him, but if you are not willing to present your opposition truthfully or willingly misrepresent your own footing, you are not engaging in good faith. You are actually trying to discredit your opposition under the false light of being a good person. Please dont fall for this because it makes you feel better about yourself and your position. Rape, murder, mass shootings and terror of all kinds toward the innocent and not so innocent. But it is not God doing these things. It is us. We choose to do right .. or we choose to do wrong.

@@carnap355 I believe the entire Bible but I would never pull out random passages to prove a point for anything. The entire Bible must be considered from Genesis to Revelation. Much of the Bible is carefully recorded history (proven) and much is cultural at the time of Christ. The Old Testament (Torah) is history and the law given by God to his people. For myself, I find that it is necessary to look at the entirety for understanding.

@leumasdiderot Sir, I am sorry for the life you must have had and the things that hurt you. I cannot understand your bitterness because only you know that. I choose now to end this conversation and hopefully your life is happy and fulfilling in whatever you choose to do with it.

The Christian God is REAL. He is intelligence personified! He impregnated a virgin with HIMSELF. Then he lived and prayed to HIMSELF. One night he doubted HIMSELF, so he prayed to HIMSELF and reassured HIMSELF that he should sacrifice HIMSELF to HIMSELF so that he could forgive US for Adam eating an APPLE presented to him by a snakeish Eve. See, just as your Pulpit Master instructed you, it all makes perfect intellectual sense!!!

Well yeah, if you take absolutely everything out of context and ignore basically the entirety of nearly two thousand years of explanations, clarifications, and theological writings which address everything you find ridiculous about the gospel; then it's easy to make it seem ridiculous. I mean, I could present atheist arguments in an absurdist fashion whilst ignoring the actual detailed explanations people use. Example: A giant explosion created everything from nothing for no reason which then spontaneously created planets and stars which sat around for billions of years until the dirt decided to get up and walk around for no reason at all and after billions of years the dirt became monkeys which gave birth to humans who now think they know everything about the universe; AND THEY'RE RIGHT TOO! It requires exactly zero effort to misrepresent someone else's views Jacob, and it doesn't make you seem clever when you do it. I don't know if you know this, but we find atheism exactly as absurd as you find Christianity. 1 Corinthians 1:18-20 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

@jay bay Exactly... but you will never get a christian to admit Jesus was a true communist.

I love the respect and kindness that you bring to this topic. I think there is a kind of fearlessness too, of allowing yourself to encounter beliefs that do not match your won. That shows a real depth of faith, and I thank you for sharing it with the world at a time when belief in our loving God seems to be so low.

Any ‘story’ can b a preferred narrative. We should want to live with truth any time we have the choice. Neuroscience has proven why we do what we do. If ur questions r sincere, seek neuroscience…..not religion.

“Your list of possible theories on the origins of the universe are as impossible to prove as my absolute certainty that it’s a very specific god, therefore, your uncertainty is wrong, and my certainty is right.” This is not an argument, it’s an assertion, and it’s unfalsifiable. Stop saying science supports you. It does not.

Harry Silvio either everything came out of nothing for no reason; or it came out of nothing because God made it. Both are faith positions. Did you not watch the video section about chance? People don’t believe in God because they don’t want to. Funny how most of the famous scientists who actually discovered stuff have believed in God

@@markmywords8013 that's a false dichotomy. The universe we see need not have come from nothing. And unless you are claiming that God is the only "nothing" with "reason". "God" is not the opposite of "no reason" I think this argument tries so hard to disprove natural causes that it relegates god to being nothing but a rock to rest the beginning of the universe on and nothing like the god of the bible.

23:25 again with the tiresome failure to grasp the basics of evolution. The values we hold are precisely those which are fitted to an obligate social mammal. So they aren't "arbitrary". Any individuals who behaved as if their kin and clan were valueles, or only as valuable as a spider or a rock, would soon find themselves without the relationships they'd need to forage effectively, protect themselves and raise children.
