THE VERY practical reason of using an over/under instad of a semi is that when its "broken" everyone can see its safe. Around the range, even in hunting situations, its so nice that everyone can walk around with "broken" guns. Its a certain calm. And simple way to ensure safety. Great video!

Over unders are pretty, they last a long time and they are easy to clean. Semi-autos are cheaper, less felt recoil, more consistent shots (one barrel is always more consistent than two) and the stocks can be adjusted to fit you. Both have pros and cons ... so I have both.

Great video, just that you forgot to mention the main number ONE reason for an over and under: simplicity and ease of training. For fun recreation or extreme emergencies, even someone with zero training will be able to figure it out to a reasonable effect after a thirty second explanation. Semis and pumps will require greater explanation and motor memory.

I love ❤️ over under shotguns for all the reasons that you listed. Over the years I have been mostly an upland bird hunter and a clay shooter. I used to hunt pheasants with a 20 gauge over under. One time on a late season hunt with a friend, my daughter and my friend’s dogs, I realized how important 2 chokes can be. We were hunting in a field with a heavy blanket of snow ❄️ there were birds all over the place and the dogs were way ahead of us. My friend almost tripped over a rooster hiding himself in the snow. He came up cackling surprising all of us. My first shot was a clean miss because I hurried it, the second was a hit and the dogs recovered the bird. My 1st shot was with improved cylinder and my second shot was modified. Even though I missed the first shot (I admit this to my shame) I got a second chance with the tighter choke pattern. Over unders are AWESOME 😎

I'm a lot older than you are and have hardened views about shotguns. Thought you nailed it well. I probably have too many shotguns (if that's possible). Unless I'm going into a duck marsh, I usually reach for a SXS first. Usually it's a matter of fit. Many shooters today don't realize how badly their guns fit them. They contort their bodies around and over the guns. Older doubles usually have more drop at comb and heel so they come up and are on target (where you're looking) much better. I'm also not a big fan of the monoblock construction that's found on almost all O/U guns. I just don't like critical brazed joints so close to my head. Also, if I'm in a goose pit with a few other guys, I don't want my hot shells ejected toward some other man's face. Then the O/U is OK, of course, but you have to open it farther to load than a SXS.

I was at a clay shooting range today and used a shotgun for the first time, specifically an over under. So as someone very new I think: They are gorgeous guns, they just look cool and classy. Picking up shells is huge because I can't stand the idea of losing spent shells. The ejection is incredibly fun. I feel it forced me to shoot better as I could not put out repeated shots. I didn't experience choke differences (instructors kept thing consistent) but can see the application. This is not to say other types are bad shotguns are fun to use and I can see the benefits of other types. Mostly I just adore the aesthetics.

You make a rather convincing case for a over/under. I mean Ive always wanted one just for the classiness and the heritage behind it. But the idea of running different choke and ammo combos depending on needs. Id love one now with the conversions to change caliber/gauge just to mess around with at the range or for hunting.

That's one great video. I grew up around double barrelled shotguns, firing my first over/under 12 cal at the age of eight. At duck hunting we used old Soviet shotguns, which served for decades, there is still plenty around for a fraction of price of modern plastic garbage. We assembled ammo ourselves in the kitchen with my father. Buying ammo, what? Lol. Some people used chopped nails instead of pellets. When somebody brought semi-auto to hunt, he was often laughed at, spending a lot of ammo and not hitting anything, also jammed a lot. I've never seen double-barrell not firing, it's a nonsense. True hunter doesn't need more than one round, I heard some old school Soviet hunters used to load only one barrel, saying "a duck should have a second chance". It wasn't entertainment back then, you go to the field and get your family a dinner, one shot one kill. Still laughing at tactical wannabees playing with their plastic toys, not knowing how to shoot. Greetings from Russia.

I own many shotguns most semi-auto and a Cz canvasback O/U. And to be honest I shoot sporting Clay's, skeet, dove hunt, waterfowl hunt alot and upland bird hunt every now and then and I use my cz O/U for everything and works great. No malfunctions, basically bulletproof and the 3rd shot is a wasted shell in my opinion. And guys that say cheaper O/U are junk are dumb. I spent about $750 for my cz new and owned a browning citori gran lightning and the cz side by side is almost identical. But a few ounces lighter and not as pretty of a finish but as in tight and feel it's just as good. It just comes down to what you like and what you can shoot. Shoot whatever you prefer and like. If your comfortable with it, you'll perform well with it.

I bought my first over under 3 years ago ( a CZ Drake). I fell in love with it. I just bought an over under 20 gauge, a used Mossberg (virtually brand new). I've not shot it yet but the 12 is absolutely fine. I shoot better with it than I do my 550 Mossberg pump. Maybe knowing I only have two shots as opposed to three, makes me more aware of my shooting, plus it just fit's so much "Moe Betta". I find that for hunting pheasants, the Drake is premier. For doves, I still like my pump. This next pheasant season, I'll go with this new 20. I may even try it on chukars which are nothing more than the Devils birds! Tough customers they are. Two more points: 1) because an O/U breaks down into two parts it can be stored in a smaller package. 2) a break open shotgun is much easier to clean than a pump or semi auto. Great video! I love ❤️ over under shotguns for all of the reasons that you listed. I have a pump also but my favorite shotgun is my Russian made Baikal 20 gauge over under. It’s accurate and it’s fun to shoot. I took it pheasant hunting and my only complaint is that this model is a little too heavy. I will be picking up a Tristar Hunter Ex in 16 gauge soon. It only weighs 6 lbs. I saw it at my favorite gun shop and put it on layaway. In a hunting application especially for upland birds, the advantages that you get with choke selection and the safety advantages FAR outweigh any benefit of a third shot.

I will add one thing about over/under shotguns and being finicky with ammo. Some have a trigger where it is reset by the recoil of the first shell. Others use a mechanical trigger. On inertia reset triggers, if for some reason your first shell doesn't fire, the second will not fire either because the trigger hasn't moved to the next barrel. This isn't an issue with mechanical triggers.

Richard Valliere I have had terrible luck with Tristar. I don’t hate many guns but the Tristar O/U I had sucked. The finish wore off in certain areas of the stock, the gun was not well balanced and the trigger would stick to the rear after the first shot. This was the most dangerous issue with the gun. What sucked is that it was BRAND NEW. My Tristar looked pretty and for under $400.00 I thought I was getting a deal but it ended up being a polished turd 💩.

Good list! Hopefully nobody out there is really wondering whether an O/U is still a practical choice - I think it always will be, and for many of us it’s a classic gun we aspire to add to our collection. I just spent an afternoon at the sporting clays range with my O/U, and although a semi-auto might have resulted in a little less shoulder soreness after ~150 rounds, the O/U more than made up for it with selectable barrels, the ability to carry it broken open between stations, easy loading, and not once having to get down on the ground to pick up empties!

Another thing you can do with break open shotguns is inserts. You can get 8" inserts to fire anything from 30-30 to .22lr. Which is a whole other level of versatility.

Fantastic video! If I could have 2 shotguns within my budget ( not rich/not poor ), 1) Charles Daly 202A over under and a Stevens 301 20 gauge turkey single shot. Both for less than $800! Win win!

i had a Special Field for years as my brush gun, when i began to hunt on private land i bought a Ruger Red Label which i really grew to love, shooting over dogs the O/U excels, and it's more sporting & classy. You get invited back to hunt again instead of showing up w/ an automatic & blasting away. and forget the carrying strap, you don't hunt birds w/ a gun slung over your shoulder on a strap.

I have heard good things about the Ruger Red Label. I wish they could keep those in production.

I was considering a semi-auto 20 ga for my 9 year old son to start shooting clays with until I saw this video. The down sides for the SA at a range are the same thoughts I had but was looking to keep recoil down as little as possible. Great breakdown on the pros of an O/U. Hell, I've never owned an O/U and about to buy this little turd one lol By far the best vid I have found on this subject. Sub# 780 for ya brother.

Think you convinced me😁. Been learning on an 870 but like that idea of two different chokes and the longer barrel too. And yeah, so much prettier. Any opinion on Stoeger E.R. Amantino? Friend is offering a nice deal for a 20 gauge (which is what I already currently shoot).

Had a contest with a guy few days ago ten targets ten rounds they where big targets thirty feet away so timing was the deciding factor he had a Remington 870 express wth five rounds four in the tube one in the chamber I had a Russian baikil O/U 27em we started with both guns loaded , both of us in a standing position , turns out it a lot quicker to reload an O/U with ejectors than it is to reload a pump action I won I was surprised I'd never thought of the speed of reloading I was very happy with the result the pump action guy not so much

Modern Mountain Man yeah mate if you get a chance you should check out them baikil's here is a list of what they can do multi chokes, ejectors you can switch off if you want if you only fire one shot it only ejects one cartridge if you want to switch which barrel fires first you just push the trigger forward and hey presto instead of the bottom barrel firing first the top barrel will fire first they are just a really good gun that are as reliable as hell can take all kinds of abuse if it's tough enough for Ivan it's tough enough for anyone plus there cheap I think Remington market them over there under the name of Remington Spartan but there baikil mine is the 27em1c model

I know right Collectors can have anything but the people of the middle class can’t even afford category C guns As a fellow Aussie everything needs ATF and transferable Ffl documents , don’t even get me started on storage regulations. It’s an ordeal to say the least. Even for freaking work they’re hard to get. Don’t believe me www.pfes.nt.gov.au/Police/Firearms-Weapons/Firearms-genuine-reason-need.aspx

Just today, I traded a Remington 11-87 Premier 12ga for a nice, used Winchester 101 skeet gun. For skeet shooting, the Rem is much softer to shoot with heavier loads but picking up shells is a real drag and the double will be a snap to clean after shooting 100 rounds every Sunday am. I once had my 1187 fail because the o-ring broke but it NEVER refused to cycle anything I fed it and I shot it well. I was sad to see the old girl go away but I will be happy shooting the new gun on the skeet range or shooting birds and small game with the O/U.
