I think 4 minutes is a pretty good amount of time for a starting soon screen, since you can run a 3 minute ad around 30-45 seconds in, have it end before the starting soon screen does, and still have around 40 minutes where prerolls are disabled for everyone coming in after

It's funny, as a viewer I didn't enjoy the starting soon screen, but someone who's been doing some behind the scenes "research" into the streamer realm makes me appreciate a funky starting soon screen lol. I've dedicated the last few days of my free time to actually working on getting my physical set up together (treating it as this mini project, might be helping with my mental work up to it as well) - I used a bunch of content from placeit and used photopea for the first time. Thank you so much for pulling together this series

As far as the optimal length of the countdown, I really think it's subjective. I personally try to start my stream at around the "2 minutes remaining" point, but I don't share the link/promote it (like on Twitter for example) until about the 1 to 1.5 minute point. My reasoning for doing that is because for me personally, I've never really had anybody show up to the start of my own stream before (and if they have, it's super rare) and typically I don't expect new viewers to stick around my "starting soon" screen for 5-10 minutes because they'd likely end up leaving to find somebody else to watch. Plus, in my personal experience (hence my answer being subjective), those that did show up to my streams (let alone chat) usually have done so at some point after the starting soon screen anyway. In addition, I more so use the "starting soon" screen to mentally prepare myself for the stream. Anyway, great video Shady!

I know this was posted a year ago but thank you for demonstrating how to make a Starting Soon from scratch! Regarding how long before- I have my (premade) Starting Soon 10 minutes before I get on camera. One of the reasons is bots - I noticed that a bunch of bots used to arrive in my channel about 7-8 minutes after I hit Start button and figured if I start stream more that that then I can deal with them before I actually come on screen. It also gives my various socials time to get the notification out and regulars to see it.

Dude I used to have a starting soon screen up for like 30 minutes to an hour with about 50 viewers haha. Sometimes people like to chill out and listen to the music but it all depends on the community.

I think the best solution is to go live when you go live. Do a just chatting situation till you are all gathered but no viewer prefers a just starting scene to a just chatting opening scene. At the end of the day what we do has to be for the viewers. No different than TV. People are going to flock to what entertains them. If Bob goes live and is entertaining from minute one but Mary goes live with 10 minutes of no entertainment people go to Bob's stream and end up staying. From the minute you hit live till the minute you hit stop it's 100% if success is your goal.

Yesterday my stream started at 4:00pm. So when I went live, I went live at 3:50pm just so I can put on my starting soon screen. And then when it’s 4:00 pm, that’s when I actually go live. Is that how I should be using my starting soon screen?

I have a starting soon scene and I try to not leave it up for more than a couple minutes (a friend has 15 minute delay) I personally wouldn't stick around a new channel if I was browsing for a new creator in the directory, and they had more than 5 minutes left on their starting soon unless that scene was VERY impressive, that said I don't have a countdown timer on mine, but now I'm considering doing so that way people know how close it will be... maybe 5 minutes for me....

nice video! So do you basically go live with the starting soon screen and then switch scenes when the timer ends or how does it work?
@AlohaCraw

The trailers before a movie are an advertisement and are occasionally entertaining. I have only seen one entertaining starting soon screen, because it was their highlight video. I turn off notifications for any streamer who has a static starting soon screen with a timer. Personally as a small streamer, I use that 5-15 minutes of barely anyone watching me to film stuff I can turn into a KZitem video.
@HeyShadyLady

that's fair enough - in my experience, I get a lot more good than bad from a starting soon screen - but to each their own :D Using the first 15 minutes for youtube content is an EXCELLENT idea!!

I'm new here and haven't finished the video so maybe you answer this later, but my question is how would you go about having the starting soon screen when you only have one monitor? Did my first test stream yesterday and the issue I was having was when I wanted to stop the stream I had to exit my game and go back to my desktop to turn off the stream through OBS, but the viewers could see all that and I don't like that. Would you say a second monitor is absolutely vital to the streaming process?

Honestly, I always go for about 10 minutes for my starting soon screen. It allows me to chill out my anxiety while everyone can get settled into stream. Especially since sometimes the bots I use for discord notifs take even longer than 10 minutes to even ping the chat sometimes.

For one of my shows, I am using OBS. I was thinking of adding a Starting Soon screen but I am not certain for what I do on my live stream is necessary. I DJ on twitch so I would like to know if I need to have one or not.

Its only necessary if you find yourself needing that little bit of space to do your final prep, or if you notice your community saying things like "aw I missed the start" even though they're there ik the first 10 minutes of your stream

I find the starting soon screen debate can get really heated or opinionated in some spaces, and it's really interesting to me. It's one of the more fascinating debates for me to follow just because everyone has such different opinions and experiences with it. There are some really opinionated starting soon screen haters, but I think it's so important what you say about not starting your content before everyone is there. I guess maybe these people are flexible and do something that's ok to be viewable by nobody at the beginning?? Because I start my stream saying hi, talking about what we're gonna do that stream, bouncing right in to everything, and I just can't imagine doing that with nobody watching, that would be so pointless. Sometimes It takes at least 2 minutes for people to get the notification at all, really. I also think it's interesting that if you think a starting soon screen is that hurtful compared to the hours that you will be live and in the category with live footage. Like statistically you're really losing lots of potential folks with those starting soon minutes? I don't know about that. I try to stay 10 minutes or under with starting soon screens, but on a day where I underestimate my time in getting things ready, sometimes I've gone to like 13 minutes and it doesn't really negatively affect my stream and my community is either still there, or still not there yet xD (The stats really continue to rise throughout the whole first hour or so as people roll in) I want to get better about getting more of my to-dos done before the starting soon screen though, because I don't want to go over 10 minutes if I can help it, so that's a personal goal to maybe shorten it~
