The name used by most Albanians in the Balkans today is Shqiptar. It comes from the adverb shqip meaning someone who speaks clearly, hence those who have Albanian as their mother tongue and more broadly those consider the Albanian language part of their identity. The traditional Albanian name which was used commonly before the 18th century is Arbëresh or Arbënesh in Gheg dialects.
Albanians who had migrated before that time from Albanian lands still use the native historical name. The Arbëreshë of Italy still call themselves Arbëreshë as do the Arvanites of Greece in the forms Arbërorë or Arbëreshë and the Arbanasi of Croatia in the form Arbëneshë. This native name is how Albanians, their language and their countries came to be known to medieval Slavs, Byzantine Greeks, Ottomans and Vlachs.
In this video, we want to explore the roots of the traditional name Albanians use for themselves.
