The Blue Tree Project began in Western Australia and encourages people to choose a dead tree that needs a "blue lease on life" and paint it in memory of a friend who lost their life to depression or had battled the illness.

We have a blue tree near where we live in Kilkivan, it’s all about men’s mental health. I learned about it over 11 years ago when I saw my 1st blue tree here. I’m from Seattle Washington, and have now lived here in Australia for almost 13 years. Have to say I’m proud to call this beautiful country my home. You really should come visit here before it’s too late in life. Oh and don’t worry about snakes and spiders lol.

Jayden & his brother sneaked out one night & painted a dead tree blue in the middle of a paddock to prank his dad & the story was narrated at his funeral years later. As it happened he knew he had mental health issues & was in danger of harming himself & was turned away from two ER's that he went to seeking help because he looked fine on the outside so he went home & sadly took his own life. Many years ago I suffered the same thing as I just wanted to die but I did not want to leave my kids suffer, So I phoned for help from Lifeline & after explaining my issues with the guy on the phone he put me on hold while he took another call. I guess it was more important .So I just sat & thought thing through & came to the conclusion that ' Life is short but Death is Forever' & I just have lived with my problem for the last 40 years .I have just turned 75 & looking forward to as many more years as I can.

There's a huge problem with suicide particularly among farmers when there's drought. Projects such as this help people to know they should talk to someone and there's a big movement in country areas to encourage men to get together and talk. I have depression and anxiety and sometimes I'll put out some words to see if the person I'm talking to is a safe person to disclose deeper things to. Quite often they don't pick up on the cues I've put out there which tells me that they won't understand and so I don't talk to them about my mental health. People who go on to commit suicide will often seek help by putting out these cues but those they're talking to just don't pick up on them. Hence the starting of R U OK Day which encourages people to talk more deeply with each other. One of the signs that I'm not doing well is either being late to an event or not turning up at all. Apparently at AA if someone comes in late they all stop and really welcome that person. So if you know someone who is often late, please don't condemn them because the fact that they showed up at all is a huge achievement for them. They actually got out of bed and turned up. So get to know this person well enough to be able to ask R U OK. And educate yourself about the cues people put out there. Another cue is a messy bedroom or workspace. It is just too much effort to clean up and be tidy. They've used all their energy up just turning up and doing the basic tasks for the day. A serious cue that stuff isn't right is the use of substances to mask the pain of things that happened to the person in the past. So check in with your friends if they're OK and don't judge for what they tell you. If you do, they won't want to talk to you again. They need support not judgement.

That is so sad. I know of another person on the Sunshine Coast who was released too early from hospital and sent to a completely inappropriate service. He should have been taken straight back to the hospital. Instead, he stepped in front of a car intentionally and is no longer with us. Hospitals need to err on the side of caution with mental health.

Males are 3x more likely to commit suicide than females & suicide is the leading cause of death in 15-24 yo's. 1st Nations young people are 3.1x more likely to take their own lives than non-indigenous young adults. Organisations like "R U OK", "Beyound Blue", "Helpline" & "Black Dog" are just some of the places you can turn to for help if managing your worries, feelings or stresses are creating an issue for you or a loved one.

Blue Tree Project was founded with a mission to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when experiencing mental health concerns. We believe help is never as far away as it feels. Blue trees dotted across every continent of the world (minus Antarctica) are both beacons of hope, and conversation starters. Yes. One hint is that ALL Australian native trees are evergreens, so they always have green leaves (except maybe the Illawarra flame tree, which loses leaves before it gets flowers, then the leaves grow back again). If they have no leaves, they are dead.
@peetabrown5813

Also I will ask again here; really can the paint be dangerous to the a tree? They a drawing nutrients and water via their roots and respiring via their leaves, I don’t see the paint on the bark as creating any issue for a tree. They only thing that the bark may do after a burn (or prune) is germinate new buds but they come from under the bark so I don’t even see it is likely paint would effect that process. In some countries/conditions they paint the trunks of fruit trees white to help avoid sunburn and (I think I was told) to help so up bugs climbing the trunks, but it is done for the health of the tree

first of all in Europe they do NOT use paint to white wash trees, it is white wash, a lime paste that has been used by people to kill bugs at home (it was done every year before Easter) and on trees, second as mentioned by all the people above, Australia is a unique continent, trees die and only those are used as memorials@@peetabrown5813

So we still have a form of the ice bucket challenge. Every Queen's/King's Birthday AFL match against Collingwood and Melbourne is called Big Freeze and a dozen ex-footballers and celebrities go down a slide into a cold pool of ice. This is due to an ex-footballer and coach being diagnosed with MND (I think in the US it is called Lou Grehig's disease) about 9 years ago and it is used to fundraise for MND. There would be videos on KZitem about the day and the costumes the sliders go down in are sometimes quite extravagant.

It gets bigger every year and it is to let people know it is okay. They can talk about it because it happens to everyone. Especially men who tend to stay silent, they are now talking. My daughter took on young suicidal teens in High School, she was only 11 but years older mentally. The stats say equal amounts of teens try to kill themselves but most girls change their minds. There is something in the brain that starts earlier for girls that makes them see if they wait things might get better. It comes a few years later for boys. She terrified me when I found out what she was doing but she was good at it. She stopped 9 teen boys on the day they had planned it. She cared for them right through High School which is 6 years here. Now it is really good to see men stepping forward and know it is okay and they won’t be judged. COVID did a number on all of us.

Leave our dead trees alone , all natural for our wildlife.

Look after yourself Ryan. Drink lots of water. Get some Paracemol with the real Pseudoephadrine, not the pretend stuff. I don't know if you can still get it there, you have to ask at the Chemist here. It's really the only stuff that work. For me anyway. We've been getting asthma storms in Sydney lately, so it's like having a flu here. So I know what it's like.

Bro. I think it’s time to migrate to Australia. Or at least come and visit Sydney or Melbourne.

Um. Can trees survive being painted blue? It seems like mostly dead trees

I live in WA and I love seeing the blue trees. Our family lost a loved member to suicide more than 20 uears ago and the trees always remind me of him. I always smile when I see them. 🩵
