Age is definitely a factor of you're dealing with arthritis. You can look completely healthy but arthritis can destroy your ability to draw

I learned from a friend of mine, that Gil Kane's art was different in later years because he began inking his art with a fine point sharpie, to meet production deadlines.

Inkers also make a big difference. John Byrne inking himself never was as good as Terry Austin inking him but he tended that way later on. I remember being struck by a later Jack Kirby page inked by Barry Smith that was just gorgeous at a time when I didn't particularly care for Kirby's work. It matters.

My favorite Kirby covers were Machine Man 7 inks by Terry Austin and Machine Man 9 by Bob Layton. I would kill to have either inker redo an interior issue of a Kirby comic. ❤

In Frank Miller's case, I know that it is health. When I went to a Frank Miller signing two years ago, he could barely walk, hunched over, and his body was contorted. In addition, he had to take a break every 45 minutes. I can only imagine what he is like today.

I can't speak for Eastman, but remember, a lot of the older artists came out of page mills. They didn't have any rights to their creation and never received a cut of the merchandising. A lot of the greats, we thought about how wonderful it was they were still working, but many of them had no choice. If they didnt crank out pages, they didn't eat. And burnout is a very real thing.

Age and poor health are two different things sometimes when you get older you get complacent there was an artist named Peter Max non comic book artist but a good artist his early stuff is great then he turned into a commercial artist and it was just repetitive not so good at the end. I really enjoy Silver age Bronze Age Comics their covers match the title of the comic story. today not so much just weird looking

Is it possible that Frank Miller is drawing like this ‘intentionally’ to get attention? Controversy sells. I think Frank Miller knows exactly what he is doing. Based on how much attention his recent art is getting, his strategy might be working. It’s not laziness but shrewd marketing strategy.

Great question, can I add some complexity? As people age, finger and hand dexterity declines. Artists hold their hands in crooked ways to get minute details. Does mobility in the hands play a factor with older artists?

Very interesting vid. Two artists that I enjoyed in their prime were Chris Bachalo and Greg Capullo. Both their art today isn’t like it was in the past. Unfortunately I feel Bachalo’s art was better in the 90s/00s as for Capullo I feel like his style has changed a bit and I personally liked his style more when he was drawing Spawn and Creech in the 90s (it was more intense and out there)

If you only draw a few times a year vs a steady schedule of work it’s hard to keep improving or stay at a high level. A lot of these artists output in the later years was only a few covers every so many years. It’s like any skill the less you use it the more it deteriorates.
@scottl8450

Sometimes it is a stylistic choice that they make that they couldn't back then because editorial doesn't kick it back like they might have then. I have read lots of stories about Stan Lee or Jim Shooter having covers redrawn or edited back in their day. Not probably happening as much now.

I think Dan DeCarlo was very consistent throughout his 40+ years career of art being published. Was still winning awards at age 80. Maybe his Archie stuff wasn't difficult to maintain style wise, but his non-Archie work was still outstanding even when he was pushing 80.

I love anything the GOAT Frank Miller does - he probably just doesn't want to take as much time, who knows, but maybe he's just on that frontal look tip at this time. Moon Knight was the same frontal pose as well. But then, look at the recent Daredevil (not 1980's) covers - especially #8 - he did, those are splendid.

It's probably a combination of things including wanting to put something out in less time (laziness), and an evolution of style. There's a direct line between his current exaggerated Batman and the weird pose on the cover of The Dark Knight Triumphant. We're simply seeing the final form of a something that started 40 years ago. Personally, I kinda dig how weird his art has gotten. I mean, i don't love the Wolverine necessarily, but that Thing and even his Wonder Woman is pretty interesting to me.

I suspect Kane and Miller view their earlier works as a fine and a necessary step in the evolution of their styles. As artists, they continue to hone in on their unique approaches to their artwork, and gradually strip away the conventional elements. These later works show lean to the experimental rather than mainstream. Any artist hones their skill by drawing human forms and objects, presenting them literally, but then many move to less literal styles like impressionism, abstract, and surrealism. As it becomes less literal, it divides the viewers into those that want to follow the artist to their essence and those who want the artist to deliver product that meets the viewers' expectations.

John Cassaday (RIP) had his art deteriorate tremendously prior to his death at just 52. His decline looked similar to Miller’s IMO. I’m a neurologist who likes to draw, so this artistic decline has fascinated me, as well. It looks as if the deteriorated artists have lost their ability to produce depth/ 3-dimensions on the 2 D page. Think of how a tattoo artist xeroxes a photo of a guy’s child to be tattooed and puts the outline of the xerox onto the customer’s arm; the result looks nothing like the child! Then the tattoo artist provides line weight and shadowing to the outline, and when the (good tattoo) artist is finished, the end product looks just like the kid in the photo. I think when certain artists age they can suffer from degenerative brain conditions that impair their ability to shadow and foreshorten due to loss of function in the visual spatial parts of their brain. Other artists like McFarlane and Lee age in a more healthy fashion and maintain their artistic talent. Just my guess. Great video, thanks!

I guess the only way to really know, is take someone like a Miller and ask him if he can still draw as well as he once did. I'm sure these artists have personal projects where they want to do their best, that isn't for sale. Those will tell if the artist has lost it or not

As mentioned, Alex Ross' art has never looked better, BUT... he is primarily a cover artist. I think the days of panel artists being able to generate the same quality/productivity as in the past are over. One of the main reasons, as others have said, is that the financial incentive is just not there for this type of work. My guess is that many of the older artists do mostly commission work where they are not on publication deadlines. It's also unrealistic to expect a sixty-something artist to work as hard as he did in his twenties.

Oh yea, you nailed it... Gil Kane and Frank Miller certainly got worse as they aged. Neal just became too much Neal, like Neal squared. The poses were too exaggerated, the colors were too rich and oversaturated, and top it off with poor writing, I could hardly get through his newer stuff, but Neal could still great artwork. One artist that changed dramatically was Bill Sinkievovich (I'm sure that spelling was wrong)... he was great on the early Moon Knight material, but became really abstract with his artwork later on... New Mutants comes to mind. George Perez remained on his game to the end, as well as Curt Swan. Choice of inkers is critical... I've seen great pencil artists just butchered by lousy inkers. I'm not a fan of Vince Colleta's work...

I think it’s a lot of nostalgia for the artist for why we try to defend how terrible they’ve become Like Frank Miller was never good people complaining Alex Ross gave Timeless Elektra a man face when if you look at his art on Saga of Electra it’s the most disgusting art Nobody should be hiring Frank Miller for anything Walt Simonson lately has been giving Thor this guitar pick shaped knee someone was going over FOC covers and I’m like why did Walt leave an empty black space And they pointed out it’s how he draws Thors knee and it looks stupid Alex Ross still has it that guy never makes a bad cover and his early childhood drawings to now you wouldn’t even think that child and him were the same person
