Love the way one steering wheel is worth more than a brand new 2022 car, and when max gets pissed he just chucked it out of the car like its nothing lol.

Look up Rubens Barrichello. Chucked it at Casino Square at Monaco, few cars hit it, it ended up near Swimming Pool half a lap later.

another great video PJ. wonder how much money Williams saved not having their screen on the wheel? and 10 meters of cable was very surprising, id assumed it would just be some massive circuit boards inside!

It's a combination of boards and wiring, based on the videos I've seen. if you check the Aston Martin video in the description you'll see one opened up. As for the screen, having it on the chassis means less inertia and weight in the wheel, but it also makes it trickier for the driver to get in/out. Mercedes in one of the source articles said that the screen and electronics was the most expensive part of the materials.

I had no idea it was this complex, very enlightening, thanks!

Glad you liked it 🙂 There's a big gap between sim racing wheels and real wheels but it's getting a lot closer these days. Fanatec for example have started making wheels that you can use both in your sim and in the real race car. That's pretty cool.

I wonder when they’ll go to an integrated LED panel. I get the feeling it’ll happen eventually.

Do you remember Hamilton’s steering wheel change in a race? Can’t remember what race it was or even when, but a fault meant he had to switch it out during a pit stop. Didn’t lose much time for it aswell.

India 2012! They changed the steering wheel as fast as the tyres.

I don’t think Amalgam’s model is functional, but a sim-racing version would be pretty cool. Thrustmaster do make a Ferrari wheel based on the 2020 car though.
