@@TVObeMm, gonna explain how the prototipe of SS really were based on the trailers and interviews, as It seems to be some confusion here. Mainly, SS was already with the Sticker system (and Paper Focus) in mind since its creation , utilizing It in various puzzles (and combat as well based on an Early screenshot?). Probably the partners wouldn't had a Big gameplay role similar to TOK. In fact, Tanabe had this idea of *Paper* since TTYD, like Toads making an staircase(sounds similar?) just that he was ignored at the time. Thats would mean that SS mainly would relate to the other games in the artstyle, and probably a better story. Then Miyamoto came out, gave his opinions about the game (which giving the context, I wouldn't disagree) and happened what happened. There is this confusion that the 3DS Demo was going to be more like a proper TTYD sequel, and even a bunch still think that this was ruined by Miyamoto.

I was the fan that loved Super Paper Mario even before Sticker Star happened, and would always defend it, so to me, it was not a bump in the road at all, and I consider it the final game in a trilogy, a trilogy that finally came back to the spotlight with this amazing remake of TTYD. This remake actually strengthens the continuity with both PM64 and SPM, by including the portrait of Mario's 64 partners that was seen in SPM's intro, further proving that pre-Sticker Star Paper Mario is all canon to one another.

@@morphstarchangeling8024 And really, Super Paper Mario is an RPG, just an Action RPG instead of a turned based one like the previous 2 Paper Marios. It was really just crossing Paper Mario as an RPG with the platforming roots of Super Mario franchise itself. It was basically a match made in heaven. Even it's story and characters were pretty damned good even if TTYD still edged it out and even then not by much. Really, the only thing I didn't like about it was how pointless Bowser, Peach, and Luigi tended to be most of the time thanks to Mario's flip ability being useful and all but mandatory for the vast majority of puzzles in the game, so I found myself almost always using Mario. Plus how situational the Pixels were, some of which were hardly even useful past the room you got them in! Of course, the series has always had the issue where only one partner was actually useful while the others were benched except in a few very rare situations where they were mandatory so I let that pass.

As a 36 year old major RPG/64/TTYD fanboy….I’m so glad younger people are now getting the chance to finally play it. TTYD is in my top 3 games ever. I’m also glad you defended Origami King. It is actually a very solid game. It’s still not classic Paper Mario but it’s absolutely LEAGUES better than SS/CS, it had a good story, great writing, good twists, great locations…I feel OK really does get a lot of undeserved hate and that’s a shame, as it’s a very solid title. I hope now that RPG/TTYD are getting remasters (still can’t believe they’re both getting them), that some of the animosity (that I myself am guilty of engaging in) regarding the Tanabe trilogy (particularly OK) is relaxed a bit and not as toxic. It truly does mean so much to us older fans that RPG/TTYD are getting this treatment as the main cause of contention was that a lot of us felt our beloved series was getting replaced and very stale. This is such a step in the right direction as so many of us never expected it to happen (let alone at the same time RPG is getting one also). And to appear at the end of the direct? That shows to me that Nintendo finally did listen as they knew the reactions people would have would be immense.

I think a major part of the issue is that the modern Paper Mario games feel like they take place within the same continuity, in the same way the original three do. It's difficult for me to buy that the Mario that defeats Hooktail is the same Mario that fights Colored Pencils, the Missile Maestro. It's difficult for me to buy that the world where everyone seems hyper-cognizant that they are made of paper is the same one where the only powers that let you manipulate your body like paper are curses possessed by the lost souls of ancient heroes that sealed away an evil demon 1000 years ago. I think a nontrivial amount of the backlash comes from the idea that the series had a silent retcon that started with Sticker Star, and it really swept the rug out from under us. We had no indication that SPM would be the last book in that series after TTYD showed how much potential there was for the concept of fleshing out the Mario universe. People's imaginations ran wild with ideas for creatures and characters for Mario partners alone. What about a Hammer Bro that wants to be a pastry chef? An outcast Blooper that's always picked last for dodgeball? A Dry Bones dealing with existential questions about life after death? It seemed like they had only scratched the surface before throwing it all away. Each new entry in the series seemed to be further confirmation that the old book was closed and they were writing a new one now. As someone that puts TTYD comfortably in my top 5 games of all time, I had about the same reaction for both Color Splash and Origami King when they were announced, since they seemed clear from the trailers alone that they took place in the same continuity as Sticker Star. At the very least, they didn't take place in the continuity I was already invested in, which essentially made them an entirely new franchise in my eyes. I didn't dislike Sticker Star, and I didn't anticipate CS or OK would be bad games. Sticker Star was unique in that it was the only game in the series I only played once, after a history of 100%ing the previous games at least 3 times each. I couldn't help but conclude that CS and OK would produce the same result, since they didn't have any of the complexities or engagements that made the previous games so replayable.

@@MagerBlutooth I feel like the first three games could easily have been adventures that the "real" mario went through offscreen, and we're just watching a retelling of them via a story book, which is also why any "paper" effects we see are either visual gags that don't affect the plot, or are explicitly supernatural and likely didn't "really" look like that.

Here, hear! As a fellow 36-year-old fan of RPG/64/TTYD, I am beyond surprised that we're getting TWO of absolute classic in their remaster/remake glory within maybe half of year! If we want Nintendo to make brand new games in those vein, we have to answer with our wallets by purchasing these games. Since Nintendo saw Metroid Dread as a huge success after the series went through a very long hiatus and still sold over 3 million units, that might be the benchmark for each of the Mario RPGs. The way I see it, the first 3 games didn't feel like they were an independent paper world, but rather, a depiction of the "real" mario's world that's simply being shown through a storybook. There's no reason to believe that the mario that visits rogueport isn't the same mario that got thrown in the slammer in isle delfino, and who would later end up traveling between galaxies. The story works regardless of the artstyle, and trying to assert that the first three games actually took place in a paper world and thus don't matter sort of cheapens them. Part of the issue with modern paper mario isn't just that it's literal paper, but moreso that it feels like each game takes place in a world that was just spawned from a snapshot of the mario series at the time, and will likely be discarded by the time of the next game.

I vaguely recall hearing about an interview where the reason the gameplay shifted so dramatically was because they felt that there was nothing left to improve for the first two games. They supposedly stated a game would get a sequel if they felt there was more they could do & improve on with the gameplay style (PM64->TTYD, SS->CS->OK), but not if they felt that a gameplay style was perfected by the latest game in their set. I can’t comment on how true this is, but I definitely do not agree with that statement if they actually said this. SPM had neat ideas, but it had a good amount of flaws I would’ve liked to see be improved upon if they actually did reiterate on its style. Well, they never went back to it, and I wouldn’t call the game play style to have been perfected by its sole game. With SS, CS, and OK, we all know how those went. While they were steadily going in the right direction with each entry, it’s clear that some of the foundations of their creative vision had problems when they constantly made normal battles meaningless.

I think my main thing with TOK is, you can probably keep a good chunk of what they wanted to do with the game but make it compatible with the old style. Like, origami. They almost had it here. Have this weird race or faction of these origami creatures, but keep it purely as a design choice rather than a "Oh no paper everyone is getting turned into origami! How sadge!", just have the origami be representative of a weird, indescribable eldritch horror beyond the understanding of the normal characters. You could even have the office supplies come back, but just have them be...you know...not literal plain-ol' office supplies. Like maybe the stapler is the mouth of a serpent. Maybe the colored pencils are some projectiles launched off the back of a Metal Gear. Stuff like that. Integrate the ideas into the aesthetic of the game without warping the story around them and trivializing things with "lol you're literally fighting a stapler, stapler go brrrrrr".

It currently feels both like the modern paper mario games are separate from the main timeline, but are also restricted as though they *were* part of the main timeline, making the world of paper mario feel strictly "lesser" than the world of the mainline games.

"If you were a fan of the Thousand Year Door, and you thought that Super Paper Mario was just a bump in the road you were in for a surprise with Sticker Star" What is funny to me about this is Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door to me is quite possibly my all time favorite video game. Consistently reaching the top of any list I could make. But, I really enjoyed Sticker Star and I really couldn't get into Super Paper Mario. Super kind of rubbed me the wrong way with the lack of Mario characters and Sticker Star felt like a fun puzzle game with beautiful 3D visuals and great theme music. I like Sticker Star. That being said; I LOVE Thousand Year Door.

I always took the “Paper” part of Paper Mario is (For the most part) simply an aesthetic design choice, not something that actually influenced the design of the game itself. It is, at its core, a Turn-Based RPG with a Paper aesthetic. When it became a core element, it stopped being that. Wind Waker didn’t have core gameplay elements featured around having big heads and cartoony graphics. To this day, I cannot fathom how “The story doesn’t matter”. Why? Just cos it’s a Mario Game? TTYD has a great story with amazing characters, SPM’s story is a thing of utter beauty and portrayed phenomenally. Was the gameplay of SPM a new step? Yes. But it wasn’t *Bad* per say. I grew up with TTYD and I cannot wait for a new generation of players to see how special this game was to me and so many others

My First Paper Mario was.. Sticker Star. And you know what? I loved it! After this I played Color Splash, which I thought was a masterpiece; then played Origami King, which I thought was the best game I ever played on the Switch. Do my points still stand to this day? Of course! I love looking back at these games with their stories and characters and their best moments. But there's one catch, I never played TTYD. Yup. So seeing that it gets a Remaster for the Switch makes me happy! For me it's more Paper Mario! Even though I clearly know this will be a much different experience, mainly because of it's more RPG-Based Mechanics. But I'm 100% sure I'll love this game like the others from the series.

While I really enjoyed this video and appreciate your perspective on this as somebody who started with Origami King, I would like to mention one thing that I don't think was made super clear in the video-- the bit where Miyamoto suggests not including a story in the game was from a Sticker Star interview, not an Origami King interview, as far as I know. I only mention this, because I personally believe things were changing behind the scenes from game to game, here. It's clear that whatever guidelines were in place that prevented them from creating Mario universe OCs were still present was of Origami King, albeit perhaps not as strict, or maybe they got better at working within their restrictions, but I don't think they were committed to "not having a story" by that point. Sticker Star has whole chapters with virtually no character dialogue, or characters at all for that matter, no plot, and Bowser doesn't even talk. Origami King definitely wasn't following in its footsteps in that regard.
@TheRenaissanceOfficial

You are correct. I could have made that clearer. It does appear that some of those limitations had been improved, wether or not they were completely gone or changed slightly, however, the interview I mentioned was from the Origami King. In that interview the developers mentioned some of the limitations put in place when they were working on sticker Star. You can correct me if I’m wrong with though.
@ThessaTheCat

@@TheRenaissanceOfficial The first interview you cite is definitely an Origami King interview-- the one where Tanabe says they "cannot modify Mario characters." I'm only really referring to the one where Miyamoto is quoted as saying "It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?" which I can only find in a 2012 Iwata Asks interview with the Sticker Star team. I tried googling around to see if the same quote was said again in the context of Origami King and was unable to find anything on it myself (aside from the mentioned 2012 interview), but maybe I'm just crazy.

You literally gave the exact answer only fifteen seconds into the video, while saying that it is not the reason. Nintendo is, in fact, *literally* just trying to make some easy money--and what better way than to touch up and re-release a fan favorite from several console generations ago? I mean, they already have the source code and own all the assets; why not? Nintendo is preparing the transition to whatever their next console will be, and while they aren't prepared to reveal any information about that, at the same time they do not want to put too much of an investment on a console they intend to replace soon. But to stay relevant they still have to release... *something*. So, in the meantime, ports, remakes, re-releases, etc. of old games from generations ago are their focus because they are, in fact, a quick and easy way to make money. The games are already made; all Nintendo has to do is get them running on their current hardware and start selling them again. Metroid Prime, Pikmin 1&2, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario. I would almost add Super Mario RPG to that list, but I really can't because it is a complete remake of the Super NES game, so it's much more than a quick port with graphical touch-ups and more along the line of Link's Awakening.

Some additional context: Super Paper Mario deviated so far from the official Mario Canon that I argue it should have been it's own FRANCHISE without Mario. But when it came out as a launch title, parents actually thought it was a platformer like New Super Mario Bros, which was advertised for the Wii at the time, but was NOT a launch title for the Wii. I was one of the kids whose first modern video game was Super Paper Mario and boy was I confused haha. I wish it was it's own franchise because it's nostalgic and insanely heavy for a Mario game. Given it's themes of Flipside being a gateway between universes, this would actually make for a great indie franchise. But this is why Nintendo STRICTLY limited how many characters you could create for a game, and BANNED derivative characters as a whole. This is why you talk to Generic Toad #5013 instead of Flavio when you play Sticker Star. If the developers were looking to make a new Paper Mario game, Sticker Star was NOT what they would have had in mind for sure.

I said it before: If the developers wanted to be so bold with their more Modern Paper Mario formula, they should have gone further and just hand off the formula to a different protagonist and give it greater freedom to not have to live under Paper Mario's shadow. The first Paper Mario came out on N64 when I was a young adult, and I've bought on launch every game in this series, and played the crap out of all of them, and play through most of them at least once a year still. I rank them as such: #1 Thousand Year Door #2 Super Paper Mario #3 Paper Mario #4 Color Splash #5 Sticker Star #6 Origami King The reason I chose Origami King last is because I really really hate the ring puzzles. They were fun for the first 5 minutes, then they just become so boring & repetitive. The game has the worst battle system ever, which is really quite an accomplishment since Color Splash & Sticker Stars battle systems were pretty awful. I really hope the TTYD remake has high sales, and I hope that prompts Ninty & IS to make the next Paper Mario game more like TTYD and stop trying to come up with awful, often gimmicky, battle system ideas that either totally stink, or are at least not as fun as TTYD.

So sorry you had to experience Origami King as your first Paper Mario 😂 TTYD is far and away the best game in the Paper Mario series and I don't think it's really even close. It's very similar to Uncharted 2 in that, once you think you've finally come close to beating it, it surprises you with several more hours of gameplay that you did not expect. One of the greatest games I've ever played hands down. It also really pushes the envelope with the material it depicts and is a game that I don't think Nintendo would ever risk replicating today with the Super Mario brand. And I can give some clear examples. ****SPOILERS!!!**** The noose hanging in Rogueport, random crows discussing real-world economics, Mario walking into a casino with a cashier who is the equivalent of a playboy model, Peach running past unsuspecting guards while invisible and nude, Bowser originally saying the word "airhead." You could not get this stuff in a Mario game today if you held a gun to Nintendo's head. So I'm not surprised they're making changes to them. TTYD was definitely a product of the early 2000s and that's the reason why it took so many risks. It was made during a time when game developers could make whatever they wanted and get away with it. Because social media did not exist back then to cancel them. But that's also a part of what made it so charming.

Love the Origami King defence, the gane gets way too much hate. People act like Nintendo directly wants to compare it to TTYD. and no of course it isnt TTYD, nothing is TTYD besides TTYD (and bug fables). But people act like OK was trying to be the "new TTYD" when it was just them making a solid game with good dialogue, good locales, and semi - replayability. Honestly out of all thr Paper marios OK sits comfortably as my 3rd favorite behind super paper mario. The only annoying thing is the combat is very dull obviously after a long time, but honestly instead of solving a puzzle in earlier titles youd just use the same 3 moves and super guard everything.. Bug Fables imo is the best "Paper Mario" style game, but idk I can definitely appreciate the love they put into Origami King, as even just 10 minutes in you can tell it has MUCH more personality than the prior 2 games, and Im still actually excited to see where thr series goes if they continue, now that they know people absolutely hate the consumable attacks, pointless battles, and white outlined characters. Overall people just need to learn to go into games with an open mind though especially when its never said to be similar to prior games, its unfair to compare them as such.
