I moved from FL to NC 11 years ago for a job. I enjoy the weather way better than FL (humidity is bad only in July and August, not year round like in FL). A few things I don't like about NC compared to FL: 1. Too many laws (laws for everything!) 2. State income tax 3. Buying real estate is a painful process (do they really want anybody owning property?) 4. Locals are friendly on the surface, but really don't want you there 5. Good ole boys in the local and state governments 6. People are very religious (not really a bad thing, I am also Christian, but come on, loosen up!) 7. Beach access is limited (beaches only for rich people?). In FL, the beach is for everyone, and access is everywhere. 8. Public boat ramps and waterways are way too busy on weekends. I sold my boat for this reason. Not fun.

This is actually fantastic information. I think it varies so much compared to what you’re used to. For what it’s worth, I disagree about the locals. It just depends on the person. We have been welcomed very warmly by many locals. Others not so much. Buying real estate is actually MUCH easier here than northern states. Maybe not easier than Florida. Religiosity is changing in NC. We’re actually going to be doing a video about that. You definitely have lots of good points. No place is perfect. You’ve just gotta pick based on what is most important to you. And I’m sorry you had to sell your boat!

On more comment on working in NC: Because of my job, at least where I work, locals seem to get preference for promotions and the work culture is somewhat tense, with an old-school style of management, compared to my jobs in FL. It's like the work culture from the days in the tobacco fields is still alive in the modern office. Very strange.

You people are making our state suck because y'all are having our trees cut down because of stupid condo's! We would rather have our trees than you people moving in and taking over our home state.. That's why people are moving out is because of y'all. Our home state doesn't feel like home anymore!

There are actually ordinances that require developers to leave 25% of the trees 🌳 on any new neighborhood in Raleigh. We also have a 30% green space requirement in wake county. And there are tree replanting programs for what we do take down. It’s actually way greener here than it was 50 years ago.

We moved to Durham NC from Silver Spring Maryland a year ego. I can't wait for the next two years to go by so we can get back to Maryland. It's so freaking boring here. Everything is a Mall. North Carolina is a great place to retire. But it’s also a fantastic place to raise a family and a lot of people come here for that reason. It’s also a great place to go to college. It has a lot for many different types of people. It just depends on what’s important to you. The people who don’t like it here are usually used to a lot more night life or very big city amenities. People who are more laid back and enjoy a quieter life, with a focus on nature and community do really well here.

@EllenPitts
2 жыл бұрын
I am SO glad you are enjoying the videos!! So...Mount Olive is kind of a depressed little town, but the crime rate isn't terrible. That is the first thing to take into account in any North Carolina small town because some of them really do have astronomical crime rates, while others are just lovely and quaint. So Mount Olive isn't terrible, but it also doesn't have much to recommend living there either. You might look into Goldsboro. It is about 25 minutes away and actually the crime rate is a little higher but not *terrible* either, however, it does have some good businesses and things to do. There is a really cute little downtown with some excellent restaurants, a neat old historic movie theatre, a community theatre and irish pub, pizzeria, coffee shop and wine bar and some other neat things. It is also a military town so be aware of that... I have been to the air shows at the base there which are kind of cool. That is probably where I would focus if I were going to be living in that area. Best of luck to you!!

Also, the bbq is terrible imo, went to the Pit and Coopers and tasted like my cats food smells like. Excellent analysis of the real estate market trends Ellen. Just knowing the numbers doesn't tell the whole story. Your views on why people are moving into or out of the state (at this point in time) gives us a clearer picture of the reasons why. Since I was retired, real estate taxes played a big part in why I wanted to move here. Slower pace, less people, more nature, milder winters, sports galore...
