In this video I tell why the watermelons are splitting on the vine. The watermelons may split because of being left on the vine to long. The plant will eventually shut off the water and nutrients going to the fruit. When that happens the watermelon will be stressed. The melons are also out in the heat for days. The watermelons react to this extreme heat and lack of watering by splitting. Another reason for splitting watermelons can also be caused by not keeping consistant soil moisture. If gardeners avoid soil dryness this will cut down the number of watermelons splitting. Having a water timer or a set schedule will also help cut down the number of melons splitting. Mulching plants for moisture is another option for gardeners to try. I use woodchip mulch to prevent splitting. One thing that gardeners can't control is mother nature if it rains for a long time the excessive watering of plants may cause cracking as well. Gardeners need to do what we can to help limit the splitting of fruit. Soil inspection is going to be critical to saving the watermelons from splitting.
