I hate to say it, but many (not all) law enforcement riders who I have encountered (IRL and online) typically have "Harley Bro" mentality. "If it's not a Road Glide, it's not a REAL motorcycle" "Loud Pipes Save Lives" "Hadda Lay 'er down" "Counter steering is a myth" - meanwhile a basic GSA1250 will easily outperform any Harley based law bike 24/7 without blinking an eye...

Yea, tough to think about such sentiments perhaps inhibiting their ability to stay safe, or perform most effectively. As you mentioned a bike like a GSA is so much more capable than an 850 pounder. - thanks for watching and commenting

A while ago, while in the military, I was stationed in Panama. There, regular police dressed in tan uniforms and got around in cars. Their version of SWAT teams patrolled the city dressed in black, they rode two up on dirt bikes which were able to easily maneuver through the constant heavy traffic of the city. They rode with M-16’s slung across their backs, and everyone knew not to mess with those guys.

I would say the body fairings, you get less wind buffering at high speed and keeps the weather off you when winter arrives. The RT is more expensive than the GS so money can’t be a factor and more or less same underpinnings. Other emergency services use the RT in UK not just the police

Here in Argentina i have seen police and military police officers ride a WIDE variety of dual sports and adv bikes. In Buenos Aires, the metropolitan police over the last few years aquired a fleet of BMW 750GS in order to be capable of persuing "motochorros" on the highway, those are pretty much the largest bikes i have seen officers use. The army and the gendarmerie have some Suzuki 350 dual sports and they bought some 300 RE Himalayans411 to patrol the Andean frontier without having to constantly deal with carburators. Maybe one can think ill of the Himalayan, but the only other really capable dirt bikes we have that are also fuel injected are the Honda XRE300 and Yamaha XTZ250, both also extremely expensive and very difficult to find here. For the rest of the interior, money is pretty tight, unarmed traffic cops or other public safety officers often ride Honda 110Wave underbones in towns, because they are extremely cheap and available vehicles (you can buy one off the floor for like 1200usd cash). Out of town and for rural areas, the Honda XR250 Tornado is king, nothing else that is locally available even comes close in how common it is. But it is also a carburated 250 dual sport with rear drum brakes, and no ABS, it's just cheap, available and "good enough" . Other than that, i have seen a glimpse of what seemed like two KTM390ADV in photoreports about the recent Chaco unpleasentness, but i can't confirm. Seems to me that these vehicles make a lot of sense for local authorities, given the state of the streets and roads here. Plus petty criminals really can't afford high-power veihicles anyway, so really big bikes would just be a waste and could be ineffective snaking through traffic and ever present dirt roads.

While the africa twin is a great option I would lean more towards a middle weight bike for police use. Thinking Vstrom 650-800, tenere 7, or the transalp 750. all great bikes, very agile, very light, very very manueverable. and while not all have the 21 in front wheel they do have 19in that would make jumping a curb much easier.

Hello from a cold, wet and dark Cape Town, South Africa.. Wow what a topic and hit really hit home, I am not a police officer but I work as a paramedic and I'm a biker. From my personal experience, I've owned a Honda Pan European (ST1300) and currently I'm riding the same sexy adv bike as on the videos thumbnail (Honda VFR1200X). I work predominantly on an ambulance but commute to and from work on my 2's, however I feel I am well qualified to comment on the topic based on my personal experience. So I'm always loaded up with my backpack, and some basic supplies should I drive into an incident or issue en route. If we break it down into categories of riding, practicality and comfort. For me it's a pretty close battle for riding although the stability of a Sports Tourer is far more superior to that of an ADV. Practicality depends on the boxes and storage, however the confidence and ability to go anywhere and do anything gives the ADV the advantage however in terms of comfort for me the Sports Tourer shows the ADV a clean set of heels, but at the end of the day, IMO, the ADV is the best fit for me and the type of work I do and the traveling I do. Our local municipality (City of Cape Town) has changed from also the ST1300 to new versions of the V-Stroms for the Law enforcement officers to utilize and the few guys I've spoken to also agree that the go anywhere and do anything factor far outweighs the comfortability factor and therefore makes the ADV bike a superior choice.. Back in the day [1990s] I used to build and service police-bicycles for our city's pd.. When hitting up one of the local-ish motorcycle shops, I spotted a "KTM police bike" [dual sport] It was killer. All black/white/gray - said to be thrown together for the Ithaca pd, but, who knows.. It was bare-bones and at the time, I was just thinking Mad Max + Crusty Demons. Nothing like the typical overloaded mobile sofas [HD full dressers] that we're used to seeing.. IMO, at least for 'cities', it'd be cool to have ds bikes - especially something like Christini rigs. [Christini all-wheel-drive bikes] They need to be 'practical', not just a moving-'hub' for bs electronics [The things claimed to be 'needed' on most LEO vehicles can be nonsensical to say the very least]

Ours (Tasmania, Australia) use BMW 1250RT's for the most part but they also have a couple of Triumph Tigers (1200s I think) which you're not immediately associating with being a cop when you see them on the road. I guess unless they're hitting dirt roads then the RT's are the way to go.

Could it be that their city has a "Made in USA" requirement? I am not a fan of the Harley Pan America, but the "Special" might meet their needs AND meet a "Made in America" requirement. If they can afford the cruiser maintenance, then they probably can also meet the Pan America costs. Personally, I'd rather see LEO on a Suzuki V-Strom 800DE or 1050DE. 🙂 I don't like your suggestion of Africa "Twin" ( call it a Queen, sorry, they do break ), and I personally despise the Tenere, but the issue, I'm sure, is the Made-in-America. If made in America is not an issue, then maybe the KTM's, with their massive horsepower, might be the way to go. The only thing for sure, is that whatever motorcycle these LEO's are on, they can RIDE IT!.

I didn’t ride motors, but my wife did,, and 90% of the decisions about bikes and gear are based upon tradition. Traffic enforcement is necessary, motorcycles, in my experience, (over 20 years) aren’t worth the risk to officers. Many friends were injured, the traffic folks couldn’t transport, they’d park during the rain or snow etc. Great for some large parks, open spaces, but not for daily work. FJR1300, R1200 GS

@RIDEAdventures only that I love my dct... Seriously though, it would be easier for them in traffic and frees up one hand and foot. Not sure how useful that would be. I question the assumption that dual-sport or adventure bikes would be the superior two-wheeled vehicle for most North American law enforcement agencies. In NA, bike cops tend to be motor traffic violation and crash investigation focused. They are not "beat cops," though they do assist patrol officers if they are in the vicinity. Urban environments mean pavement. And I doubt department administrators would want their bike cops chasing suspects up and down stairs. Bike cops work in London because they can get through the traffic to pursue criminals who are in foot - and they are allowed to literally ram the suspect pedestrian/ bicyclist/motorcyclist with their bike. I don't see LE in the USA adopting that policy any time soon. A dual-sport or ADV cop bike would make more sense in rural law enforcement communities, and I've actually seen rural sheriff's deputies with LE pickup trucks with dirt bikes or quads in the back. I think I've also seen forest service rangers with that setup as well. But I don't see even rural cops doing their full shifts on a bike....

The idea I was trying to convey is LE never knows when a simple traffic stop could turn into a wild situation. So having a more agile, nimble, and capable bike to begin with could really mean something in those instances. Thanks for watching and sharing, guys.

I think that the ADV bikes are too high for many police officers, (women perhaps?), then the department should have different kind of bikes and that can't be possible. Even if there are different bikes with seats in two positions, high and low, I think that the police can't decide themselves which bike is more suitable for them, I don't know, maybe they can, or at least they should. Some states use Harley Davidson, why not a Panamerican instead of another model? The real issue, IMHO, is money (I'm not talking about saving money), and power, usually not what is the best choice.
@milanstepanek4185

In rural areas it makes sense but elsewhere something like a sport tourer makes more sense. Same carrying capacity (backup weapons, armor, comms, computers) and no tradeoffs when it comes to on-road agility (no large wheels, lower center of gravity, stiffer suspension etc.).

But if they ever need to hop up on a curb in the city......or some other obstacle.....twice the suspension travel and ground clearance sure might come in handy.

I think one of the reasons they give for sticking to the bigger bikes is a more robust electrical and charging system. Modern police bikes are running digital radios, computers and printers, camera systems, etc. These thing all stay on while the bike is not running and the battery needs to recharge quickly while the bike IS running. Both Harley and BMW make bikes with a “police package” from the factory. Some of these even include a factory lighting and switch package that is all plug and play for the agencies that buy them.
