The puzzle piece is an ableist symbol and autism speaks is a horrible company so next time you want to do something like this use the gold infinity as that is a comfortable for most of us autistic people :)

I knew about autism speaks but I didn’t know about the puzzle piece and I have autism, so is it bad? Or is it offensive because to me it’s not but is there a history?

@@Alexandra_004 why the symbol puzzle piece??? was my question too because there is no problem that needs a solution in Autism as we did in the puzzle and also there are many Autistic peoples there at old age but this puzzle looks childish.

Happy autism awareness month! I was diagnosed at ten, I have autism and adhd, recently diagnosed with severe anxiety and social anxiety, putting together sensory and anxiety is hell, I’ve been physically bullied growing up to where I had black eyes and bloody mouth an nose, they would torment me and call me retarded and dumb and the n word too, I didn’t want my mom to worry so I didn’t tell her, please tell someone if your getting bullied especially physically, it’s dangerous, one pulled a knife on me, I stand to stop bullying especially stop bullying kids with special needs.

Autism Awareness month was also good in the creation of ways for the accessibility to a diagnosis.

3:43 cool so you like the shift. How are you going to try to make the world easier for autistic people? It's so simple to say that you like or support something, but those words are completely meaningless and only serve to make yourself feel better when we are still struggling. Kind words have their place, but we are long passed that now.

Do we know what causes it yet, or are we going to just accept that it keeps rising, like how we accepted the rising rates of cancer and diabetes in America for the last 70 years?

First of all; don't ever compare autism to cancer! It is deeply offensive to compare a neurological difference to a disease that can kill you. Second, the number of autistic people aren't increasing. What's increasing is the accessibility to a diagnosis. There are five main factors as to why there are more diagnosis. 1. Better awareness. You might find it hard to believe, but a lot of pediatricians didn't know what Autism was as far back as the early 2000's. Thus ended up resulting in a lot of misdiagnosis's of other conditions like BPD, which was particularly common with Women in the UK. Now that the signs and traits of autism are more common knowledge, there's usually little doubt during an autism evaluation. 2. Gender recognition. Originally it was thought that autistic boys outnumber autistic girls 20 to 1. Though recently its been altered to 4 to 1. However a more recent study has suggested the ratio might be the other way around. Why is this? Because of medical bias towards women. Girls are taught from an early age to "hide their emotions" or "act like a lady" to conform with societal values. Plus the criteria for autism was written around boys. As a result, many autistic women are diagnosed after they turn 18. 3. Racial recognition. On top of a bias against women, autism diagnoses were harder to obtain not only because of a bias in favor of white boys, but also because BIPOC families couldn't obtain access to affordable health care for years. Studies have shown that the majority of autism diagnosis's in BIPOC families, come from wealthy and middle class families. That doesn't mean that more money makes you autistic, it means that far too many people in low income households are not getting the support they need. 4. Indirect hostile Environment. The most common form of harm that affects autistic people is sensory overwhelming. This can come from loud noises like lots of cars or noisy construction, Bright city lights, exposure to foreign smells, or cheap clothing. These environment factors don't cause autism. They merely trigger reactions if excessive. Thus if you live in a rural area with very little exposure to any of these, you could live your whole life being autistic and not knowing it, because you never experienced the sensory meltdowns. The other thing you need to keep in mind, is that exposure to these factors were far less common 100 years ago. Less so the further you go back. On top of that, studies have shown that one of the most common sources of sensory relief for autistic people came from horses. Which before the advent of the automobile; used to be humanities main mode of transportation. 5. De-stigmatization. Because there's now a better understanding of autism, which shows its not the common fear mongering nightmare that early awareness campaigns made it out to be. More people are open about being autistic themselves, or seeking a diagnosis for their children, because they're encouraged to be more proud of who they are. There's still a lot of discrimination against autistic people, but thankfully its far more easier for those people to get shut down. This acceptance is extremely important, because autistic people are 9 times more likely to take their own lives than neurotypical people, because of that rejection from society. Were you expecting a more simpler answer?

They’re not being a ‘drama queen’ I’m sorry if you feel the need to call you autism some thing like cancer, but you comparing autism to cancer just proves the point. Autism is not a disease, autism is not something that needs to be cured. Autism is something that needs to be excepted. And it’s VERY obvious that the people in your life were probably not excepting. Which is why you compare autism to cancer. Because from what I’ve seen from people who think of autism as a disease. It that they have been told that it was so much that they end up believing it or ‘accepting’ that it is. When it isn’t. ASD is a developmental disability, a change in the brain’s wire-ing and NOT by any means something like cancer.
