Recalling the incident, Senna’s race engineer Pat Symonds said: “In Dallas he touched a wall and broke a wheel. “During the debrief he said ‘I can’t make out how I hit that wall. The wall must have moved’. “With any other driver you would say ‘don’t be bloody ridiculous’. But he was so troubled by it that we went and looked at the wall. “Tyre marks showed that somebody had crashed into one end of one of the huge concrete blocks and pivoted it a little bit. “He’d been placing his car a few millimetres from that wall, and when the edge had moved a fraction he hit it. “I thought then that this guy was beyond anything I’d ever experienced before.”

In 1989 the normally aspirated engines arrived and many thought that Senna would lose some of his amazing speed without turbos. But Ayrton remained supremely fast in all conditions. While going around corners he still refused to take his foot off the gas pedal, a technique he learned as a kid during his karting years. Ayrton Senna's trust in divine intervention helped him to go faster than he normally could have. Being guided by a higher power enhanced his performance beyond what it would have been without religion. His faith made all the difference. Ayrton had an unshakable belief that he was fulfilling God's will. He prepared himself better than any other driver before, both physically and mentally. He was an innovator in using sport psychology, physical, and mental trainer Nuno Cobra before anyone else in Formula 1. He used techniques to control his breathing and relax when he was becoming over-aroused. These methods allowed him to concentrate at almost superhuman level and get into the zone almost at will during races. Gerhard Berger: Once he was focused he didn't feel any pain or stress. Nothing. Damon Hill: He talked about a state of mind he got into whereby he was there, but not really driving the car. Prost describes how, after a race at Monaco, Ayrton explains how he monitored his performance during the race itself: He managed to visualize from a 'third person' perspective (i.e. as if watching from outside) during the race and corrected his mistakes. Ayrton Senna had the qualities to be the best racing driver of his time, and that is exactly what he was. His tombstone simply reads: 'Nothing can separate me from Gods love'

@@Robert_Levi_Miller Overrated? You don’t know a hell of alot about F1. The best testament to greatness is how your peers review you. Autosport polled 217 F1 drivers for their views/vote. they voted Senna #1 with the statistically superior Michael Schumacher #2. Senna won 3 World championships and 41 Grands Prix. He also had 39 podiums (either 2nd or 3rd place) in only 161 races. I saw him race for Toleman in the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix. He qualified 6th in a non top tier car. It was hotter than a mother and the track was blistering like crazy. He was running 4th when he hit the Armco on lap 47 and finished 14th. After returning to the pits he told his race engineer he was on his same line and the wall must have moved. After the race they inspected the Armco and sure enough someone hit the previous one and knocked it into the Armco, moving it 4-10mm. That was how precise his driving was. Dallas was only his 8th race in F1. In the 6th race at Monaco there was heavy rain and Senna was in 2nd catching Alain Prost at the rate of 4 seconds a lap. Unfortunately they stopped the race on lap 32 and Prost was the winner. Senna passed Prost on lap 32 but scoring was completed on lap 31. Many people are still pissed off today as he was obviously robbed of his 1st victory. He went to Lotus in 1985 and got his 1st victory at Portugal. Overrated, no way

Lewis Hamilton is a big fan of Ayrton, he has one of his real race-worn helmets. He went as far as to re-enact Senna's flag waving after winning the Brazilian (São Paulo) 2021 GP which earned him an *official* honorary Brazilian Citizenship, so yeah, he literally is a Brazilian too now. Michael Schumacher once said that "Ayrton is number one" and also dedicated one of his wins to Ayrton (since he just won that one because Ayrton died in front of him) He also won one of Ayrton's Race-worn helmets. The day he got the exact same amount of wins as Ayrton at the time of his death, he couldn't hold tears. Alain Prost, once Ayrton's biggest rival, retired a bit before Ayrton's death, and he became very good friends with him, he was the last person Ayrton ever talked to. He was one of the few men that carried Ayrton's coffin on his funeral.

The greatest, no doubt. Even Hamilton and Schumacher agree with us. You can find them saying that in interviews. He is worshiped not only here in Brazil, but in Japan too. My 6th birthday party was Senna themed. I was 7 years old on that May 1st. I was alone in the living room watching the race and when the crash happened (till this day no one payed for that poor soldering irresponsible crime), I stormed at my parents bedroom crying. I knew he was gone. It was my first experience with death. He taught me so much at the same time about about perseverence, competitiveness but also about kindness and humbleness. That 1993 Donnington Park GP was out of this world. Overtaking 3 cars and leading in the first lap, including both Williams, the better cars on that season. Going in the rain with slick tires faster than the others with wet tires. Finished being 1 lap ahead of everyone, except the 2nd place who finished 1min23s after him. This race was completely mindblowing and that performance will never be repeated by a human being again.

His legacy and influence is really the biggest since it passed out for so many years, and it's still remembered... even outside F1, there is no one who can match, he is the idol of the professional pilots themselves, what can we argue with that? One thing that folks tend to forget to mention is that modern F1 has so many more races per season now, hence the possibility to get more pole positions and and race wins in just a single season. Also...as touched on in the vid...Senna's career was much shorter than both Schumacher and Hamilton. There are some that say...had Senna not been killed, he may very well have gone on to become the president of Brazil as he was so loved by the people and cared for the people of Brazil so deaply. He had a ruthless side when in the heat of racing but his compassion for his fellow racers and people in general was something very special.

Great video. I'll tell one of the things that impresses me about Ayrton: Even before racing in F1 he knew he was the best, that he would be world champion and the greatest of all time, and he believed that was his mission and he had a God given right to win. Isn't that mind-blowing? I mean, even the most confident driver in the world dreams of becoming a champion, but not consider it as a fact that it's only a matter of time to happen as Ayrton did, specially in such difficult sport like F1 that you depend on so many factors that are out of your control.

Cannot say how much joy crossed my heart seeing someone else (that is not Brazilian) looking to aspects that transcend racing results per se, and summarized perfectly what I always felt, with “GOAT” , versus Best achievements. I have been a lifelong Senna fan. When he died, I was unable to watch another F1 race for almost 20 years. There was nothing like “Senna” around anymore . Still there is not. Senna was able to do what he did when races were not dependent of box calls, live car adjustments with integrated electronics, as it turned to be, sine he passed away. It was the true talent, intelligence and personal racing gifts, when associated with a good team and good car that created champions. Good drivers always make the difference. No question that Schulmacher, Lewis and currently Vesttapen are really great drivers, and more talented then the other competitors at their respective racing times . You add a good driver in the right team with a well developed car, and results will happen, as it happened for them. Pick the same F1 car, any car, whatever car and technology year you want. Then put all great driver from the past - Fangio, Stewart, Rind, Fittipaldi, Picket, Villeneuve and others you admire. Include Schulmacher, Lewis and Vestappen (best achievers or in route to be) of all times Make them compete at their top shape. Guess who will win 9 of 10 (I would like to say 10 out 10, but cars do broke)? Senna. And not by little. Thanks for a great posting.

Interesting note: In 1989 Senna and Gerhard Berger went to Imola to see what they could do to improve the track's safety and they went to the exact same corner where senna would crash at. The corner had a retaining wall which had a river behind, senna wanted to move the wall back saying that someone would die at this corner and indeed 5 years later that someone would be Senna himself.

I’m a senna fan, and the only reason why I truly fell in love with Mad Max SINCE 2016 was because the head of Red Bull's Driver Development team, Helmut Marko, reserved this ONE comparison to Senna for Max Verstappen (before Max even got into F1 officially). To me Senna was the greatest and had the most stunning career with the most memorable wins, drama, aura, mysticism, hype, etc…. around him. He not only lived up to the hype, he seemed to relish it better than anyone else would or could have. I really never, ever liked or cared for Schumacher or Lewis. But I had heard Brazilian media in 1994 was already speculating that this German wonder kid, Schumi, had Senna's number. Schumacher has the legacy and was a complete package of a driver in F1 (he was good at the politics, always backing his whole team and boosting their morale, getting the right team members around, and all-around prodigious racing - although I'd say Senna was flat-out faster and more spectacular). I know senna died and he MAY have won more. But we won’t know. But what we do know is the greatness of Schumi. And to be honest, I do place Lewis above even Schumacher (and I have to clarify, I say FUCK LEWIS. I TRULY DESPISE HIM - I was always an Alonso guy, and went with Max early on). I truly believe racing now against the current generations of prodigious talents (like everyone seems to be extraordinarily prodigious, like senna was in his day) Lewis stood amongst genius-level talent for like 2.5 generations. If you see Lewis' videos as a kid he was always top of his class, above any other peer (other F1 stars/racers can say that too, but I truly believe Lewis carried an bigger weight and talent amongst his fellow young competitors than the any other young prodigy that has come up either with him, or after him - except MY MAN MAX). I always had a scary feeling that if Lewis met his hero Senna (which was, of course, physically impossible) he would’ve beaten Senna in flat-out speed. And what’s crazier is Lewis even has higher accomplishments than Schumi does to back it all up, in a much more cut-throat age of the highest density of talent this sport has ever seen. In my book, Senna is my favorite, along with Verstappen. But I hate saying this but undeniably Schumi is greater, and Lewis tops them all. Just you guys wait. About 10 years ago everyone was saying Senna was the greatest and we all denied Schumacher's / Sebastian Vettel's greatness, saying they don’t compare because they had the best car. Now look, everyone is saying to recognize Schumi as the goat, and no one wants to acknowledge Lewis to be the true best. After Lewis is retired and we have a new crop of out-of-this-world talent, or maybe max or Charles have a few championships under their belt, everyone will be contrarian and say Lewis was the best. The cycle continues.😂

I’ll admit I am a noob when it comes to f1. I’ve only starting watching for 2 seasons. Lewis Hamilton is who got me into f1 and that’s why he’s always be the goat to me. I recently came across the video where he helped save the guy who was unconscious and I came across this video. It’s so sad how he had everything going for him before the crash. I heard the person he saved had major depression not being able to help Senna. He probably doesn’t have the stats but has the legacy. Unfortunately, it’s sad how so much f1 greats don’t seem to live a good life after racing if all. I really liked the video and just subscribed

Great video. As a 65-year-old Brazilian, I always wonder how much my origin influences my preference for being, Senna, the best. Of course nationalism and emotion interfere with my judgment. But trying to be as impartial as possible, analyzing the points of view of so many foreigners and over so many years, I continue to stand by my opinion - of course respecting everyone's thinking, wherever they come from.

As a Brazilian-American who was a little kid watching F1 with his dad before we came to the states in 94', ironically enough, I am predictably a HUGE Ayrton Senna fan. The thing that made Senna special, made him different than other drivers is that he was probably the first driver ever to push his car beyond its intended limits. If a car was supposed to finish 10th on the grid, Senna could push that car to 4th or 5th, and sometimes podium in it. These days, we have all these analytics in sports to predict what a player or driver would do under normal conditions, and Senna would invariably surpass those predictors, and do it by a wide margin. I've watched and studied F1 since I was little, and went back to watch old races and try to see if other drivers could do what Senna used to do, and every single time I step away thinking, 'Nope, nobody would've even ATTEMPTED some of the risks Senna took and when he took them'. Whether that makes him the greatest or not in other people's books that's up to them, there are definitely many very deserving drivers out there, but for me, Senna is the greatest, no question about it 👍

One common argument against Senna is that his legacy was ‘amplified’ by his death. But no one uses that argument for other drivers who died racing, such as Jim Clark or Gilles Villeneuve who both have incredible legacies, or Jules Bianchi who many believe was a future superstar. So I don’t think it’s a valid argument to say that his death amplified his legacy. My top 5 GOATs are: 1. Ayrton Senna 2. Lewis Hamilton 3. Jim Clark 4. Michael Schumacher 5. Alain Prost

I'm Brazilian and I live in Switzerland and if you compare Jim Clarck's talent and the similarities in face and body structure and desire to isolate themselves from the media and return to their farms of origin, they are very similar in terms of aggressiveness and sweetness being questioned by that. At the time of the F1 race, Senna said, no space can go unfilled, if another racer allows it, just as Clark thought. I visited both graves for assault in Scotland and Brazil. I am 89 years old. I love both.
