Ironic that a feminist today would complain about this song. The song is about a woman pressured by society to leave the man's house for the evening. She "ought to say no." Perhaps you don't understand what the word "ought" means. Perhaps you don't understand the "cat and mouse" trope. You probably don't understand how the influences the dynamic of the duet. Also, it was written and performed by a husband and wife. Please, try harder not to be insufferably stupid. It's very annoying and a waste of everyone's time.

Expecting a feminist to understand anything involving romance is expecting too much lol. If guys accepted the first no as gold then honestly there would be nobody having sex. It took 3 months to persuade my now wife to go on our first date. I sort of hooked up with one of her close friends so she didn't want to ruin that relationship. 15 years later now we are still together. Must be a 15 year long rape lol.

The number one song in America at this exact time was Cardi B’s WAP and I guarantee that song is in her playlist along with all the other hip-hop music that I also enjoy which is all about pimps and hoes and murder and violence and drugs and absolutely no respect for women from male artists or females themselves but these woke idiots that need to take a nap are concerned about the lyrics in a Christmas song? This is what happens when you live in America and have very little problems so you go out of your way to create something to be upset over! I've read somewhere that the lyrics of the song revolve around social expectations of when the song was written (the 40's). At this time it was very socially unacceptable for a woman to spend the night with a man with whom she is not married. The song portrays the story of a woman who wants to spend the night with this guy but is worried about the social implication so she tells him "oh I should probably leave now cause you know, social expectations and such" and he is all "well no one would blame you if you just stayed here since it is so cold out." So she is flirtatiously resisting his invite to stay even though she does not actually want to leave. It is certainly not rapey but some people have a tendency to overreact and get offended by things they don't understand.

"I read somewhere" so unless this claim was made by the song writer, do you know what this makes your comment? An artistic interpretation, so is hers and they're both equally valid because art is subjective, shes interpreting it through a literal, more modern lens based on our updated social standards, you're interpeting it through the lens of the existing social standards then, your interpretation is more nuanced but its no more or less valid than hers?

@AlexandreFrenetteJ

Here's a quick explanation and context of the song, in case you're like the makers of this video and lack critical thinking skills: In the 40's in North-America it was deemed inappropriate for a single man and woman to be alone in a private space together, such as a house or apartment as is the case here. Moreover the setting is the man's domicile in this case, which in itself bordered on scandalous for the time. Now according to the song's lyrics; The woman "drops by" so she is the initiator of the impropriety. She has enjoyed her time but she now worries what others might think if she stays any longer. She desires to stay, referring to that desire as a "spell". She says she "ought to" say no, meaning that SHE WANTS to say yes. So the scenario is that both she and the man are on the same page, they want the same thing, but she is worried about the social perception of staying the night and he is helping her by providing plausible excuses to stay. There is literally nothing creepy about this at all, any perception of creepiness is entirely in the head of the listener, and a good psychologist can help with that.

Why 'Baby It's Cold Outside' Should Stay! 1- When she says " lend me a coat. " and he says it's up to your knee's out there. He is saying the coat won't do much if the snow is literally up to their knees. 2- Wolf and Mouse is how common straight relationships are often looked at as. Wolf chases mouse gets chased. Men chase women like being chased is how the relationship is looked at which is why it is labeled like that. 3- " Say what's in this drink " is a simple question asking whether or not there is alcohol or anything that can get her tipsy. Another reason why she should stay is because she IS getting drunk! 4- She DOESN'T say no 3 times. That is what she is TOLD to do by society. Say no if you don't want something to happen. She is saying that society is telling her to say no but she DOESN'T want to! 5- The guy isn't toxic whatsoever or has " toxic masculinity. " You can't just throw those terms around loosey goosey-

Totally totally MISSING the point about how girls back then had to deny their desires. Also, the gender roles were REVERSED FROM THE START, there were "TWO" versions of the song in "Neptune's Daughter", one version was a *woman singing to a man*. And while "What's in this drink?", today, sounds like a reference to a date rape drug, in the time the song was written, it was something someone would say when they wanted to blame the alcohol for doing something that they otherwise would pretend that they would never otherwise do. "What's in this drink" basically implying that the drink must have been made with something that had/has a much higher and more potent alcohol content than what's "on the label", so to speak. Like..."I (a straight white cis male) can't believe that I just sang a torchsong at karaoke, in front of a crowd, man, what is in this drink? Gotta be something stronger than the label claims...

Ugh. Okay. I know it’s past the season but I stumbled upon this video and now I’m mad again. As a feminist, it’s insulting to see others who claim to be feminists berate this song and trash it. It has always been a classic and favorite of mine. THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT DATE RAPE!!!!!! Let me tell you why. Exhibit A) ‘what’s in this drink?’ Probably the only solid argument people have against this song. And it’s not even that solid. Let’s review. How many times have we tried to blame something on alcohol for our behaviour? ‘I was drunk! I wasn’t thinking!’ In this situation the woman (who clearly wants to stay) is trying to blame the alcohol for wanting to stay ‘what’s in this drink? It’s making me want to stay’. Context clues: this song is written in 1940s. At this point in time it’s unethical for a woman to stay over at a mans house when she isn’t married to him. Therefore she is thinking about how everyone would think about her if they found out she stayed (‘my sister will be suspicious’ ‘the neighbours might think...’) Video evidence: if you look closely at the video or even listen to the tone of voice the singers use you can clearly hear/see that she wants to stay. The fact that she is always leaning in to him, that when she pushes away it’s not forceful or demanding, it’s a playful shove. Her voice has a light and coy tone in it, it’s not scared or angry or anything like that. It’s inviting. So when she’s saying ‘no’ she’s not saying it ‘leave me alone!’ More like ‘oh please... try and convince me to stay’ The mans part: you may think he’s being forceful with her. Newsflash. He’s not. Once again, when he’s getting her to stay he’s simply spinning her around or taking her hat off. Honestly, if he really wanted to rape her he could easily push her down and climb on top. But nowhere in the video does he intend to do that. Once again, the body language shows playfulness and flirty. And the fact that most of his arguments is ‘it’s just cold outside! Stay!’ Should say enough. ‘What’s the sense of hurting my pride’ listen to his tone of voice. He’s not saying it like a fact, it’s teasing, it could be interpreted with a playful smirk. In the end, Baby it’s cold outside is a classic holiday song that does not deserve to be disrespected like it has been. It is an ode to playful teasing and flirting with your significant other. It’s not about date rape or forcefulness. And I will continue to defend it with my life. P.S on another note, if baby it’s cold outside is banned for its ‘rape like’ lyrics, how is it that many rap songs are not? When there are lyrics that literally talk about rape? Those are the ones that should be looked at.

BLT4LIFE No, proving by example what works and what doesn’t is simply wisdom, and THAT leads to peace. The Old Social Contract works, and has always helped us survive as a species and civilization, and rejecting it is Ultimately a form of insane Nihilism. I strongly recommend “The Man Who was Thursday” to help you escape from this mindset.

Look the internal narrative of this song is about a girl who wants to stay but because of society feels the pressure to leave. Its not about date rape. Its about desire from both men and women and how that social dynamic plays out. Its kind of amazing that they were able to tackle such a complex subject such as female sexuality in such a charming way and conservative way.

I was laughing so hard😂. She overthought it way to much. Its like if you are at bat in a baseball game and you think about everything you are supposed to do then the pitch comes and you arent paying attention to the ball (which is the simplist thing to do in order to hit the ball) and woosh it goes right by you. Thats what happned here she thinks that ‘i oughta say no no no’ means she is saying no. Actually it means she wants to say no but she is so tempted she can’t and when she says ‘at least i can say that i tried’ it means she couldn’t resist temptation. Also the ‘whats in this drink’ part is the female referring to what her drink is. It would be like me asking ‘hey what did you get to drink for me?’. One last note: Feminist care more about masculinity than most masculine men

This video has a major 2010's bias, as the original song was based on the notion in the 40's that it was taboo for an unmarried man to sleep woth a woman at all. The line "say, what's in this drink" references the idea of "Oh, well you can't be mad at me, Father, because the drink made me do it when I stayed with Herman last night!" or "Well, Ma, I would have come home but the drink made me stay with Stella last night, I'd never dishonor the family if I were sober." It was seen as dishonorable for two unmarried people to even stay a night together pre nuptials, because of the overly religious views that lingered back then. Me as a Catholic, I don't care, but then again I'm in 2023 Canada, and you guys are in 2023 United States (late 2010's United States when making this video.) So no, this song should not be retired, and John Legend sucks. Kelly did a much better version with Ronny Dunn from Brooks & Dunn, though I always laugh at that version as both singers come from a region of the United States that is at the same latitude as Africa, where they likely haven't seen a srop of snow at normal elevations.

It’s not a bad song she’s twisting it and picking out of context lines, the drink line doesn’t make sense as he drugged her( roofies such as Flunitrazepam where not ivented till 1960 20 years after the song) also this song is about breaking from societal norms” I ought to say no no no” and “my sister will be suspicious” is about being looked down upon and judged for staying at a man’s house before marriage, as at the time period is how it was perceived, it’s just she’s looking for something to be offended by.

Are we not gonna talk about the second scene of the song? With the woman(the Wolf of the song) is actively trying to keep her man(the mouse) overnight. The exact same lyrics(changing your to my and ect) but because she's trying to make him stay, not caring about her image, it's not creepy anymore? The whole song and scenes are literally /empowering/ to women of the time. The fact that they want to stay overnight, but people will talk about them & call them whores & whatnot. The first girl is worried about people talking, so she's looking for a reason to stay. The second girl isn't worried, but her guy is. He doesn't want people to talk about her, but she's happy to stay with him overnight and let them talk. This is just a huge song about flirting. You can take a lot of songs and make them sound creepy.

'Baby, It's Cold Outside' is about a mutually romantic dance. Just like in ballroom dancing, to dance effectively you need a strong 'frame', which requires one partner to gently push away with their arms and one partner to gently pull in with their arms (or else you either smoosh together from both pulling, or break apart from both pushing), while coordinating feet together in synchronized or complementary movement. These are key differences between dancing and attempted rape, HuffPost. Watch the arms: is the push/pull gentle, or violent? Oh, gentle: the woman is giving weak social-norms-unrelated-to-her-own-feelings reasons for going, and the man is offering weak weather-related reasons for staying. Now watch the feet. Is she moving WITH him (1-2-3, 1-2-3?), or against him? With him? K cool, this song is about a 100% consensual encounter; a romantic tango that every dance-capable listener understands. I think everyone at HuffPost need ballroom dance lessons. I'm not being sarcastic. I think it's the kind of real-life activity that could connect you to your human bodies and human souls and the traditions and interaction modes of our human ancestors. Then maybe you'd have a more intuitive understanding of human interaction, rather than this weird, shallow, surface-level grievance-seeking-for-fun mind-rut you seem to be trapped in. I promise you: humanity is happier, more fulfilled, and more peaceful on the other side of where you are. It's safe. Come over to the time-tested, happy side.

Here's some basic research, "baby it's cold outside"- written: 1944 Rohypnol- invented 1975 Ketamine- invented 1965 GHB-invented 1960 That means that this song is at minimum 16 years older than daterape drugs itself, I'm sure women are capable of knowing what alcohol is, the line is her way of looking for an excuse to stay, not implication of date tape drugs.

Chloral Hydrate commonly referred to as a Mickey, used as a date rape/knockout drug in someone's drink since 1903-1913. If you want to talk about her research you should do some too. I hate this video, but just pointing out date rape drugs did exist back then.

@@oneearrabbit ok, still though not what the song is about, I'm pointing out that given the time period as well, date rape was not something being talked about on tv, certainly not published in a song, and it is so much more controversial than staying at a mans house in the 40's that it wouldn't have made it to the screen if it was about a man rapeing a woman.

" whats in this drink " was a common saying in the 1940s when alcohol was making influencing your decisions. So if you and your friends were singing badly one might say "What is in this drink" it has NOTHING to do with date rape.
