Simply put, Italy go out in the Round of 16 without Baggio. It's an understatement to say he carried the team. He WAS the team

The 1994 World Cup Final was the first football match I ever watched, and Roberto Baggio was the first footballer I ever knew. My dad was a huge fan of his and was convinced that Italy would win. When Italy finaly lost, you could really tell he was devastated. Even now, when we talk about that final again, he still regrets why Sacchi didn't put in one of Zola, Casiraghi, or Bepe Signori to take the penalty because Baggio was clearly playing with pain in his leg. I was seven years old at the time. Time flies by so quickly. It feels like just yesterday my dad woke me up early on a holiday to watch the game.

Baggio carried Italy to the final and picked up a hamstring injury in the semi-final. He played the final anyway but was clearly hampered by the injury. Without the injury, I don’t think penalties would have been needed because he had a few chances that he normally would have scored.

We're the same age. The 1994 World Cup final was the first football match I ever watched, and Roberto Baggio was the first footballer I ever knew. My dad was a huge fan of his back then and was convinced Italy would win. Even now, when we talk about that final again, he still regrets why Sacchi didn't bring on one of Zola, Casiraghi, or Bepe Signori to take the penalty because Baggio was clearly playing with pain in his leg.

Baggio was an outstanding player with Juventus scoring 78 goals in 141 games, 27 goals in 57 games with Italy, and 218 goals in 488 career games in total. More than respectable. It's a shame that he is mostly remembered for failing that penalty, when even the greatest Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have missed penalties at big games.

If Baggio had scored and Italy won, he would've become immortal. He would be worshipped at the same level as Pele and Maradona. He was an unbelievable player, but because of this miss, he never took the place he deserved in the football firmament.

A shame, because he was such a fantastic player and this penalty would likely have been inconsequential anyway. He still has one of my favourite first touches of all time: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yq17y6KCoIWDjGk An outrageous talent
