Hi there! This is not necessary with the hard; however, the soft is more fragile so it will need it.

First time i used my block it popped loudly and split in two, sending little bits of hot metal flying everywhere... bind your block people.

Hello Deborah, Thank you for your questions. The binding wire can be found on Rio's website here: www.riogrande.com/search?q=binding+wire&c=&t=1&pageSize=32 There are a few solutions that are great for helping position your work for soldering. You might enjoy a "third hand" such as these: www.riogrande.com/search?q=third+hand+soldering&c=&t=1&pageSize=32 Another popular solution is the honeycomb soldering board where pegs or t-pins can be used to help hold pieces in position while you work. Here are some options: www.riogrande.com/search?q=soldering+honeycomb&c=&t=1&pageSize=32 Hope this helps!

You can use binding wire while soldering but I prefer not to. It can cause nasty scars on your metal so I'm not a fan.
