The Ganpati festival was revived by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 as a means to unite Indians and fight against British colonial rule. During that time, public gatherings were restricted, but religious festivals were allowed. Tilak recognized the potential of Ganpati celebrations to bring people from different social and economic backgrounds together in a public forum. By turning it into a large, public event, Tilak used the festival as a platform to inspire nationalist sentiments, promote unity, and discuss political issues, thus playing a crucial role in the Indian independence movement.
