They are a good canididate for a solid axle swap but the stock TTB is great when set up right. The stock suspension/axle parts are extremely tough compared to Jeeps and you can be pretty hard on the truck without having to worry about breaking stuff. The tricky part is finding aftermarket parts. A lot of stuff has to be custom. I thought my 94's engine was toast a few times but it always ended up being a bad sensor or more often than not a burnt spark plug wire. Mine is set up just the way I like it. It's lifted around 6" with Skyjacker components, has long radius arms, the leaf spring were converted to over the axle, swapped the front and rear 3.27 axles to factory 4.10 axles, and swapped out the a4ld for an m5od. It's a reliable setup for high speed runs down the beach or camping in the mountains.

I think the 1st GEN is ripe for a overland build! I know the TTB is a mixed bag but I like it.

Dude this is inspirational. I plan on getting a 1st gen for a family trail rig. Such a great budget competitor to the jeep xj. Great vid!

I have several first gen explorers that are amazing and awesome. I think they will become popular soon. Best bang for buck. Both of mine are 5 speeds making them very fun

Why not ? They are gangster offroad. Got a 95 xlt stock on 31's goes everywhere

That's exactly how the green explorer was set up 😉. ~2" lift, 31's, all it took to make me fall in love with offroading. Went everywhere like you said. The new white explorer is already quite a bit taller and with quite a bit bigger tires now though... 😁

How wide were your wheels?
@BuildSomethingAuto

If I recall correctly the tires were 10.5” wide (31’s). Wheels were stock. The new explorer now has 37x12.5R17’s 😅

@@terrellfinley2611 IMO lift springs and lift shocks (1-2") plus 31s or 32s and send it! explorerforum.com has great info on these btw, including posts about how much lift you need to clear different sized tires and such.

How big was the lift

If I remember right it was 2-3" no more. Then I ran 31" tires. It felt like a good combination to me since the tires filled up the wheel wells reasonably well. With the engine swap I'm going to move up to 33's since I'll be running bigger axles and I might have to run a small body lift to make the engine work as well. Hoping I get similar proportions with not a TON of wheel gap at normal ride height, but no scrubbing or anything (shouldn't be an issue since the axles will be wider as well).

DO U THINK I SHOULD BUILD UP MY 5TH GEN EXPLORER
@BuildSomethingAuto
3 жыл бұрын
It just depends on what you want to do with it. For me personally if I had a 5th gen I'd keep it as a daily driver, and buy a cheap first or second gen to build. The earlier explorers have less electronics, are body over frame instead of unibody, and are rwd/4wd format instead of fwd/awd so they can be easier/better to turn into wheelers if that's what you're wanting. It's all up to you about what you would want out of it though!

I think you might be pretty young so let me add a few things. If you're young and wanting to get into wrenching and fabricating I'd highly recommend starting with something simple. A 5th gen explorer is kind of a complex vehicle to start with especially for a full "build". You could start with a gokart or dirtbike and work your way up to an older truck or 4x4 as you get more comfortable. Until then buy a repair manual for your fifth gen (haynes or chilton) and if it needs servicing read through the manual and see if you're comfortable servicing it yourself! Good places to start are changing the oil and doing basic services. Best of luck!
