@Robin Doeve i disagree with your point about jon. nothing was handed to him, not even his rightful name. - jon grew up disowned because he is a bastard in the eyes of everyone - catelyn hated him since he was a baby - he literally can't hold any title passed down from the starks given there are five legitimate heirs which is the reason why he took the black and followed benjen. in other words, jon had no other prospect. - he had to earn the respect of his black brothers. his stark blood did not give him any boost whatsoever. - he literally died by the hands of his brothers in the wall. - he did not get the love of ygritte because he has stark blood. that shit does not matter to wildlings. again, he earned it. - the wildlings do not care about his lineage, only what he has done and what they understand about his character. that is what earned him their respect and loyalty. - even with the direwolf pups, he gets to own the runt of the litter even though he is technically the eldest. if nobody saw the albino pup, he would not have gotten any and there was no question about that. - the fact that he is a brother of the night's watch is a significant description of his character, that he does not belong to a glorious house and is bound to serve the realm. he technically isn't allowed to have children too. - nobody handed him the title of lord commander of the night's watch. it was an election and he won. he didn't force anybody to vote for him. - even the old bear jeor mormont's valyrian sword is called the bastard sword, and since his son jorah mormont the smuggler is not a worthy heir, that's the reason jeor bequeathed his sword to jon, but it's like that's because jeor has nobody else to give it to, so why not jon? he's great at sword fight. again, if he wasn't great at wielding a sword, he would not earn a valyrian steel. - even with the show deciding that he is now king in the north, he still earned it. lyanna mormont is a kind of litmus test for bullshit. she had zero confidence in both sansa and jon, but they were able to somehow survive ramsay. northerners do not just hand you things you didn't earn. he's king in the north for a reason. and no dragon or weirwood magic helped him either. it was just the sum of all his achievements. only in the end are northerners acknowledging his stark blood, after he's achieved things. - his own sister sansa has always maintained that they are only half-siblings, a constant and subtle disownment, and only in the end is sansa openly accepting him as just his brother, after she had been reunited with him. honestly, even if you haven't read the books, just paying attention to the show will tell you that jon did not get handed down anything for free or because of privilege. cersei had a great deal more that got handed down to her without earning anything. cersei marrying king robert was an arrangement that tywin earned for "helping" the rebellion. everything that cersei has gained access to when qyburn went to king's landing is all thanks to qyburn. she would not have zombie mountain. she certainly would not have had access to a drop of wildfyre which is the reason she defeated all her enemies in the sept. she certainly would not have a master of whispers if she didn't have qyburn.

Which actually makes her an even more grounded and believable character, since this flaw of hers is pointed out in the show, both by other characters and the narrative itself, and she learns from it, which means character development. When people grow up without feeling like or being able to utilize their gifts, it festers. Their potential-self is snuffed out and they try to become what they are expected to be. Cersei became the noble Lady and Queen consort. But she hated it, deep down. She never had a mother who could teach her how a woman navigates through a male dominated society. Margeary had Olenna. With Tywin dead and her on the Iron Throne; all her 'Tywinesque' talents are unleashed but, they are fueled by resentment and vengeance. She has become a monster.

I usually enjoy your takes on both the books and the series. However I don't think that Cersei's show portrait is better just because it is more humane. Her book counterpart depicts her as a delusional person who's lived her whole life chasing after things she'd never have. She is clearly sick and flawed. Her coldness towards the ones she claims to love, although unrelatable to most of us, does present a very realistic side of human psyche. Her lack of warmth and kindness is very much grounded in social reality as seen in people who suffer from psychological illnesses such as sociopaths. She may come across as blunt in the books, but I believe she poses a more complex issue to the wholesome of the story where there aren't always clear outcomes, justifiable motivations or gratifying vindication to appease our spirits (as seen all the time in the show). In the books George R.R. Martin is constantly making us deal with one matter which is "trying and failing". We see it left and right: Jorah, Rhaegar, Tyrion, Jaime, Ned, Jon, Rob, Robbert, and so many others... which says something about succeeding. About how hard and rare it is to achieve success, and that it is not at all a certain thing. This not to say that Show-Cersei is bad but she is indeed simplified when compared to Books-Cersei, who's way less black-and-white and less crowd-pleasing.

Show Cersei is an outright aversion of the Mad Queen trope, while Book Cersei is a subversion and deconstruction. That's the main difference in tone between the show and the books - the books explore the tropes of fantasy and other fiction genres, deconstruct them and show them in-depth; the show either play them straight (Jon, Dany) or outright avert them (Cersei).

i don't think the mad queen / wicked queen trope was abandoned in cersei's tv character at all. she is the ultimate mad queen of them all. they just made her a complex mad/wicked queen. everything expected of a mad queen pretty much applies to many of cersei's decisions and aspects of her character: - luring sansa into trusting her - her insecurity brought on by margaery tyrell - being disliked by most if not all which she uses to fuel her evil malice - using a mad scientist (qyburn) for her evil plans - she even has her own monster in the zombiefied mountain - she is an evil in-law to sansa and margaery - manipulated jaime since they were kids - utterly evil sister towards tyrion - resented the bastard children of her husband (similar to evil stepmom) - excessive abuse and blatant display of power (she did say that "power is power") - she quite literally hates everyone apart from her children, sometimes she even hates jamie - nukes a church for pete's sake - i think it was also her order to have mycah killed (arya's friend in season 1) - there's more but i can't list everything of course she is made complex and human but a mad queen all the same

I disagree a little bit, sure Cersei is more relatable in the show, but she's more tragic in the books and you get to see why she's a cruel person. It's just that a lot of people love to to put cersei under the "crazy" archetype, which she is fram from, sure she's inmoral, but so is her father and he's never described that way. Cersei is, in the long run, a victim of abuse, misogyny and parental neglect, which is why her chapters are so bittersweet, you can see her internal misogyny has reached the point of self loathing, and, her ambition to "be" a man and "act" as one has lead her to take these terrible mistakes that will only hurt her on the long run.

The funny thing about the TV show Cersei is that she basically won the game of thrones and then defeated herself. Tommen was set up to be the most powerful King Westeros had seen for some time, her son and heir. Granted he was young and weak but he was well.. young, that would change as he grew older. He was married to daughter of the second most powerful house, the Tyrells, and had the support of the church. He was set to be a power house. Cersei's refusal to accept her time had passed and that she should focus on the success of her child lead to her destroying his future. She destroyed all of that because she couldn't let someone else be Queen and focus on a legacy rather obsessing over her personal glory. If she had embraced the next generation like the Queen of Thorns had, Tommen would still be alive and her family secured for multiple generations.

I tip the proverbial hat to the actress Lena Headey who made Cersei come alive as a character. She's one of my favourite characters in both the show and the books. I actually loved the fourth book because we got to see Cersei's perspective. Like you say, she's a believeable villain. Considering the route the series is heading down a small part of me is secretly rooting for Cersei. But only because all the good guys are now thoroughly on one side. Cersei is the last intriguing character standing. I think finding out how she is going to fail is the main appeal of the last season for me.

I think Cersei told that story to Catelyn in Season 1 with a purpose. She wasn’t genuinely feel sorry for Bran, she told that story as a back up plan, in case Bran will wake up and tell everyone what he saw at the tower. Like if everything Bran said was true (that the Lannisters were having sex and he got caught) then why the heck Cersei came to visit him when he was in a coma and blessing him get well with those touching words?

Jon has become a boring character who appears to be motivated only by always "doing the right thing" (and yet he makes catastrophically stupid mistakes). Daenerys is a cold dictator who wants the iron throne because it's her "birthright". Cersei was a good character in seasons 1-4, but afterwards she goes down hill as much as every other character. She loves Tommen but still goes through her plans with the Faith and the Tyrells, seeing him living in a hell and suffering because of her. I'd be careful with claiming show Cersei loves her children more than an extension of herself. She suffers through a walk of atonement and then blows us the sept of Baelor along with the Martells and her own kin, which is political suicide if not actual suicide, but then lo and behold she is suddenly the most powerful piece on the board. She is suddenly winning the war at every turn, suddenly she can do whatever she want, even fuck Jaime in front of Westeros and no one will bat an eye. She despises Tyrion for killing Joffery, but when confronted with the truth she side steps and blames him for Myrcella and Tommen (with Tommen's death being a direct result of her actions). Cersei is a bad character. She is sometimes dumb, and sometimes a tactical genius. Sometimes sane and human, and sometimes a delusional monster. She is a villain, but her power in its entirety is just unrealistic plot device to allow her to be a villain. I love Lena Headey and she did a fantastic job at seasons 1-4, but post 4 I find it hard to say Cersei is a good character.

lena heady is still a fantastic actor along with peter dinklage regardless of the lines each of them has to deliver. actors aside, i agree that all the characters have underwent a downward spiral post season 4, courtesy of dan and dave of course. i think cersei is still a strong character despite all the shitstorm, compared to other characters who suddenly got relegated into the shadows like tyrion for example. the tyrion sabotage was too deliberate. cersei is still a good character. it's the plot lines that suck because they can't take back the dumb changes. if dorne is still an important player like it is in the books, cersei would have a better story arc, and everyone overall. the domino effect was sadly too far-reaching when dumb & dumber decided to butcher grrm's fantastic dorne spiderweb plots that connect to the entire westeros and essos story arcs.

I could also say that Martin's rules don't apply to her. She is the only one who did not suffer dirrectly for her actions. She knew she will loose her children and yet she still blames other for it. She almost let jofrey beat her. And she still encouraged him. Martin said that no one survives for long but ... she did from beginning till now. Jamie lost his hand. tyrion was in danger always because of her and her mad son . When her relationship with Jamie no longer needed to be a secret she started to threaten him and see him as a foe . Everything she cannot control she plans to kill. Even her children. If she wanted to keep them alive she should have let history run its course.
@maggyfrog

@themariusnos i think grrm's rules apply to her. maggy the frog may have "foretold" her future but grrm teased that maybe the characters are really just ruining themselves and that the prophecies are just there to make them crazy believing it's all fated when the "prophecies" come to pass. she basically challenged the high sparrow who obligingly imprisoned and publicly shamed her with that walk she could not avoid. those are direct consequences of her actions trying to defy or control the high sparrow whom she underestimated in terms of power and influence. the walk of shame is probably the most blatant karma she has had yet. the high sparrow just needed an excuse to snap the doors of the trap shut and lancel just so happened to have that information. it's also cersei's own fault why the incest thing and regicide came to light because she had an affair with lancel whom she made to poison the king. again, those are her own actions which came back to haunt her.

Though admittedly Cersei put herself in that situation, she blew up the sept as a last resort. When Tommen outlawed trial by combat she knew her days were numbered and she couldn't form a solid alliance and Jaime was banished. She was cornered so she struck. Her anger with Tyrion has always been there, literally. She's hated him for the death of their mother. She truly believed he killed Joffrey and Tyrion did murder their father. Tommen got caught up in her own scheming but Myrcella was an indirect result of Tyrion shipping her off to Dorne, against Cersei's wishes. Cersei hasn't won anything really. She sacked Highgarden but had her ass handed to her when Daenerys attacked her army. That fight was momentarily put on hold so pretty much they were at a stalemate. Nothing in season 7 indicates she's won a thing. The only thing she can cling to is her unborn child which she will possibly lose anyway. Cersei, imo, is one of the best because we have seen her win and we have seen her lose. She isn't some self righteous hypocrite with everyone fawning all over her while turning a blind eye to what she's done. With Cersei what you see is what you get. Her losses and gains helped shape her into what she is now. She's paranoid and borderline insane. She's had one of the most realistic transformations of any character on the show.

Cersei has been through so much. She lost her mother at a very young age, only looked up to her father who neglected her and obviously favoured Jaime. Tywin hated tyrion, and what do children do? They imitate their parents. She was sold to Robert Baratheon so Tywin could get his hands back in kings landing. She wanted to love him but he said another woman’s name on their wedding night. She endured SEVENTEEN years of marital rape and domestic abuse. Her children were the only things that stopped her for committing suicide. Then Joffrey died. Then Tywin died. Then myrcella died. Then Tommen died. Then Jaime left. She has no one. She’s a bad person don’t get me wrong, she’s done some awful awful things. She has her reasons. Let’s compare her to daenerys, they have both been abused and victims of a cruel patriarchy and they have both gone on to do awful awful things. The difference is Dany does bad things while telling herself she is doing good things and helping the people, cersei does bad things for herself and to protect the ones she loves, she’s bad and she knows it. Basically what I’m trying to say is that every character on this show is grey, Cersei’s awful but not without reason. She’s been a victim and been used all her life and is trying to survive (some of her methods are questionable to say the least) and she does not deserve the hate she gets.

I'm not sure I agree with your point about how cersei is not humanised In the early books, there's a chapter in book 2 where tyrion reminds her of how great a threat stannis is, and she breaks down crying at the thought of her children being killed if stannis takes the city, and tyrions inner monologue states how astounded he is at this display of vulnerability.

Finally! Makes me wonder if the people writing comments even read the book you know. Another example:in the scene where she reveals that she has Tyrion's whore, they left an important part. Tyrion pretends that every thing that happens to her will happen to Tommen-rape include. He doesn't know why, but he realize she view him as a monster-so he uses this. She, of course, panics, and tries to hit him. He stopped it, and this is were he says this famous speach about how one day, when she feels happy, she'll, ect, you know the rest. So in the book, when Tyrion quits, she is angry and terrified, instead of triumphant like in the show.

We must agree to disagree... you present this as if the show's version of Cersei is much more relateable than book's version. I rooted for Cersei in the show, I really did. Until season 7. In season 7 I tried to relate to Cersei, but I just couldn't. Somewhere in season 5 they made sure we have characters we love and characters we hate, and you had no choice. I loved Daenerys and I hate her now, I loved Tyrion and I hate him now, I loved Cersei and I hate her now. Lena Headey is 100% the reason I wanted Cersei to live to season 8, not 60%. In the books I still root for her. I think Ned was stupid and so as Robb, yet I know so many people who loved Ned and Robb in the books. And that's why Martin is a genius, because he lets us choose which character we like and which we don't. In conclusion: I believe right now the books are better that the show in every aspect. EVERY aspect. P.S. I literally went nuts when they added the Golden Company in season 8. Like, you haven't talked about them for 7 seasons even once! So of course I'm happy they bring in the Golden Company, but show fans who haven't read the books have NO idea who they are.
