What they should have done is build Classical Chinese architecture from past dynasties in modern and state of the art materials with forward thinking architects. These types of buildings or ideas are already being made in other parts of the world. The mix of tradition with hi tech engineering would be more than enough to visually communicate power and values of china, but no. Instead they built European Disney land hahaha

I actually was in Anting (the German town) with my professor a group of other students (we are from Germany). It was really strange, because everything looked familiar but slightly off. Like an uncanny valley of architecture. We went for lunch at the town square (as you would do in a small German town) and observed the environment and the people there. Our Prof told us that he visited the city a few years earlier just as it has been build. There were no restaurants, no shops an no people there. He was surprised how much the replica-city evolved in a positive way since then. (The city still was mostly empty, but we saw a few families, shops restaurants and even a Starbucks). He also expects that the situation will get better for these towns in general over time. But in the short term this project definitely didn't meet the goals the Chinese government had in mind.

Japan took their legacy architecture and built upon it. Curved roofs, onsens(hot baths) narrow streets, tiny facades.. They also attach deep importance to their cultural heritage in other areas like the martial arts, their version of chess (shogi) other board games like go. They also push their Shinto festivals to the extreme building colossal structures and dragging the through the streets. I mean we all love Japan, for the same reason we love a van gaugh-esque remote village with a wind mill in the Netherlands. It's unique and interesting yes but more importantly Authentic! The only way these European towns would've prospered in China is if they were built by Europeans living in China. Like China towns in the west. But without humans and culture these structures lack the most important component, a soul.

Many people in the comment seem to come to the conclusion that the Chinese don't build traditional Chinese architectures in China base on this video, that is not true. The European themed cities built in China probably don't even account for less than 0.1% of all the cities in China and as the video pointed out, they are built for affluent Chinese who appreciate European style buildings, it's just supply and demand. There are still a lot of historical buildings left in China even after Culture Revolution and they are building many more traditional Chinese style buildings in China. With the rise of the new Chinese nationalism in which history, culture and tradition play an essential role, I would expect to see even more traditional Chinese architectures been built.

Seems to me that the pop psychology at the end is unnecessary... It's a real estate / tourism gimmick, that's it. Ockham's Razor satisfied. Also, the context for the "weird architecture" mentioned at 6:54 is plainly provided in the article you're showing on the screen at that time - it's referring to a number of modern buildings in places like Beijing and Shanghai that are often mocked because of their unconventional design, like the CCTV Headquarters a.k.a. the "Giant Trousers" building. It's kind of like how Londoners make fun of the "Cheese Grater", the "Gherkin", or the "Walkie Talkie" office towers.

As a Chinese person, while I agree with some points brought on in this video and overall am pleased with the level of quality OBF produces, there are several points I think are failed to account for. 1. The cities emergence aren't necessary due to "lack of creativity" but rather, I think its cause the ultra-rich class in China likes the Western themed buildings. Shanghai and Guangdong has historically been very westernized, and were both home to numerous treaty ports. As such, there is definitely an influence on the people in adoration for Western styled buildings and culture. So I dissagree with saying its because of lack of creativity, but rather, a blind adoration for the West 2. Western style architectures are not new in China, and have been a thing for a considerable amount of time. During the height of European colonialism, there were lots of cities that were given the status of treaty ports with huge Western influence. Harbin for instance have a lot of Russian Orthodox styled buildings, and the city I am from, Guangzhou, has an island that was rented out to the West called Shamian Island, where there are Roman Catholic church and british styled buildings that dated back to 1859 under the Qing Government. The island is often described as the best preserved colonial architecture in the Asia, surving many civil wars and social revolutions. Overall, though, I believe this is a really great video essay and brings on very valid poihnts.

Tianducheng (天都城) was developed by a subsidiary of the Zhenjiang Guangsha company, a real estate company listed in Shanghai. Construction began around 2007. Its central feature is 108-metre-tall (354-foot) replica of the Eiffel Tower and 31 km2 (12 sq mi) of Parisian-style architecture, fountains and landscaping. It opened in 2007, and can accommodate more than 10,000 residents. Initial occupancy was low, with an estimated 2,000 people living in the development by 2013, leading some to label it a ghost town. By 2017, however, its population had grown to 30,000 and the development was expanded several times. It now has its own metro station (named Huangheshan) as part of the Hangzhou metro network. -from Wikipedia and other online sources

Very impressive actually. Although it wouldnt have the historical aspect of the real thing, It would be a great change of scenery for those who wanted to lived in it without having to deal with the cultural shock and finishing all the pile of paperworks that needed to be done to actually living in another country. I think tourism both from external and domestic is not everything all there is although i have to say, some of these projects is indeed looks very beautiful. There is still a lot of possibility they could do with it especially for those who planned to live there. The project itself is not over yet. It would be an understatement to say that the Chinese doesnt understand the historical value of the real europe. They are a bunch of business experts and China has its own historical sites, of course they understands that. But making "europe town" has its own benefits. Apparently, those benefits is worth chasing under their calculation. This might have something to do with their communist ideology or alternatively it didnt have anything to do with it because we know china's approach is very pragmatic when it comes to economic plans. For me honestly, i'm more interested on seeing these projects on its final form. Seriously, i would want to see european styled buildings on the beautiful and unique chinese landscape. Maybe we could also see Wuxia films being made in there, who knows.. That will have a charm on its own.

I appreciate this video, but like anything else, things must be catered to that country's individual tastes and situation. This reminds me of the little towns and regions that exist in the US (Chinatown, Little Italy, Little Saigon, etc.) but there are key differences that exist between the Western countries and China, notably the heterogeneous nature (and excellent recruiting campaigns) of the West compared to China (who doesn't recruit as many foreigners), which prides itself on its homogeneous culture. If China recruited or encouraged more people from other countries to live in these towns (e.g. encouraging Italians to move or study in their version of Little Italy) it would achieve that authentic feel that China was hoping for. Instead, it feels more like a tourist location for Chinese nationals, which is fine, but the rich Chinese who buy these properties need to market it as a tourist destination rather than as a living, breathing small foreign city. Personally, I don't think this is cultural appropriation because the Chinese government took the time to recreate things authentically and got assistance from outside developers and architects. If it fosters stronger relationships with other Western countries, then I don't see why others would take offense over the recreation of these cities.

mimicking foreign architecture is good to a certain degree, and can be a helpful part of cross-cultural interaction. However to take it to this degree is an absurd and superfluous endeavor that gives very little practical return compared to the investment. I can't say I'm surprised that most of these happened in Shanghai, they've gained a reputation of being economically rich and culturally poor for the past century, as well as a weird cockiness and disdain toward the rest of China, preferring western cultural products instead of our own. This is probably at least partially due to historical reason, as Shanghai was home to some of the biggest foreign colonies back in the day, with a significant part of its land governed by western agencies. Many of us consider Shanghai quite an embarrassment but that doesn't stop them from being full of themselves, so what can you do really...

I think it's cool they are taking an interest in European architecture and landscaping rd nice to know our architecture capentry and landscaping are appreciated and of interest to other cultures outside of Europe.... plus just like for us to build or create something using traditional Chinese or Japanese techniques is difficult the same is for the. As it's not their normal technique it would be difficult and challenging for them just as it is when we try to use their methods so I rate them for trying even more so for actually replicating such things with such a stunning resemblance to the original👍🏾
