I found this discussion very interesting. Also, their sense of style gives the impression that the new generation of Asians have a hipster, trendy, hip-hop influenced style.

That was a very interesting discussion. It's cool that as Asian Americans, it's ok to have our own way of kind of celebrating it, but still thinking of where we come from and representing the culture. I'm Thai, and our new year is actually in April and its celebrated a little differently, but I'm proud as an Asian American to be representing the culture. Great video guys!

I've been a fan of your channel for years, love your unbiased or positive standing on Chinese-related topics in general, when many channels on KZitem are just pure anti-China propaganda for different agendas, please keep it this way, this is how to run a long-term successful channel, there gonna be more subscribers and business coming from China in the future.

This was so thoughtful! I love Chinese New Year because its purely a time of celebration---it doesn't offend anyone, it doesn't put down anyone, it doesn't exclude everyone. In such a divided culture, it is quite cool to have a holiday so happy and traditional.

Growing up, Chinese New Year has always been one of those holidays that is probably more important than an actual birthday or other holidays. China doesn't really celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas, so Chinese New Year is a really big holiday - which is why the Chinese government give everyone like 2 weeks off. Family come together and you meet relatives you never thought you were related to them. Parents always get together with family and have a big feast and then play mahjong with the adults afterward, while the kids go play fireworks. Fireworks goes on for weeks and weeks, everywhere. The spirit is very lively and everyone is celebrating it in the whole nation. The purpose of the money inside red envelope is for younger kids' age, so they can age slower. That's why we call it "压岁钱". The purpose of the red envelope is for good fortune and to ward off evil spirit. As for food, we generally make dumplings, glutinous rice cake, spring rolls, longevity noodles, and a lot of other food from scratch. This has been a tradition in China for thousands of years.

Very interesting, i am 2nd generation vietnamese/chinese in germany and the funny thing for me is that you are talking about lunar new year being more modern/western would attract more youths. For me lunar new year is definitely a family tradition/celebration/event. Maybe that is why some young people don't care or don't even realise it's lunar new year tomorrow, cause they don't live with their parents or don't interact with the asian community/meaning don't have asian friends for instance.

I'm not Chinese but love the food and new year's food. Love Jai, local takeout has it thruout the year and I usually will make Jai one of my selections. As an Asian American, for many of us, culturally namely food cross over and are enjoyed. I love filipino, korean, vietnamese, thai, lao, chinese foods as well as japanese. Truthfully I'll pick anything other than japanese food, except maybe noodles. My chinese friends have invited me over for new years feast or gone to chinese restaurants to celebrate. I participated in red envelop giving in Saigon with vietnamese friends. And of course we live in America so things Americanize and in Asia things change culturally as well. Enjoy ...................

As a hardcore mixed southeastern Asian. I can say, my father's native family, Laos celebrates Chinese New Years with a huge party! Beginning of the week, we get toasted. End of the week, we get blitzed. In Laos, the women were the dancers and men were in suits. We still do, find some Laos friends. They'll be having a ball for Chinese New Years!

I understand the point you used the word "FOB" is for "Fresh Off the Boat" simply describing new immigrants, unless you mean to address it as "Forward Operating Base". I only wanted to point out that using the word FOB may have a negative cognition to it when describing somebody, because that is the motive for creating a such term. I don't know if this is too much of a presumption to say, but it seems to me that American-Chinese are quite different from Chinese who were born and grew up in Asia. Most of the American-Chinese seem more American than Chinese in behaviour and culture. I think American-Chinese must never forget that they are first and foremost Chinese. All diaspora Chinese. Never forget where you came from.
