Very good explanation and advise. Thanks you for educating me.

With microcontrollers like Arduino and programs like JMRI, DCC has become a lot cheaper than earlier.

On good DCC command stations it is possible to run a DC locomotive on address 00 . On the other hand top decoders will allow a DCC loco to run on an analogue layout . I still run DC in both HO and garden scale but most of my layouts are DCC .

Small to medium sized layout DCC and standard DC both work even with lots of switches but for a larger-medium sized to club sized layout DCC is probabally your best option

can you run both ( dc) for yards and docks etc?( with plastic rail joiners)

From what I know at least I don't even have my first non-ez-track layout set up and I live on an island with a population of 700,000 maybe 1000 if you really dig into it are model railroaders

I'd be interested in DCC but my entire collection so far is DC, so I doubt most of them would work unless I do some weird installation thing I know nothing about.

DC is not cheaper, You can get into NCE DCC system for under $150 dollars.

It is if you have tons of nice locos and stuff they probably cannot be easily changed and I will not spend the huge amount the new locos cost...

I am new to,the hobby.,Can you run DCC locomotive on a D C system.

yes you can but you might need to switch something on your dcc controler

I have a dcc zephyr power pack from digitraxx, and have a 4x6 layout running on dc right now, I would prefer dcc, because it is the future of model railroading and you can do more with less complications. However I am having trouble trying to dial and run up a dcc locomotive, dont know why it's hard, but the directions to it are not helping, if there is a demonstration video to show me how to use (which I have looked and still cant find one) please share. Thank you

Mike Ries I guess it depends on what's wrong. If it's the wiring, DCC. But if it's the loco itself, probably DC, for the circuitry is simpler.

If you're just starting, go with DCC and it can grow with you, especially if you have money to spend on the hobby. Individual loco control, light and sound may be very desirable to you. Adding lights, sound, signals, etcetera, to your towns might also be a plus. If you only have a few locos and a fairly small layout, it shouldn't be a great financial burden to convert over to DCC. But, if you are well advanced in the hobby and have lots of locos, a mature layout, scenery at or near completion, DCC may be cost prohibitive. Me? I'm older with lots of equipment so changing over to DCC makes no sense to me. I enjoy what I have and have no desire to add to it.

"dcc burns out dc loco's motors" thats why all locos on DCC need a decoder

For smaller layouts DC is much, much cheaper. I'm not new to the hobby, but I'm not an old timer with loads of cash to blow on model trains. I'm in college, but I still have a small train room. So DC works great. I can afford it, and it gets the job done. All you need are a couple of dirt cheap DC controllers and a power pack for accessories.

It's different from the 50Hz AC used in the early model trains. DCC stations transmit signals through the track in order of tens to KiloHertz.

Quality DC locomotives are getting pretty hard to come by. An equivalent DDC locomotive costs around 4 times as much. The cheapest DDC systems cost 4 times what a quality DC system costs. No matter how small my layout I'm pretty much forced to go with DDC. Well done wealthy boomers, when you and your money retire from the hobby, model railroading will die with you.......
