I love Eco-Drive. I own three Citizens, one is the "Chandler" 37mm field watch, which is quite a dated model. Thus, the dial is transparent and in strong lighting one can see the solar cell underneath. Nice to see the improvements there. My other ones are a JDM dress watch which is Eco-Drive but under 5mm thick and a Promaster NY0040 in quartz from the early 2000s, which has been unfortunately discontinued for quite some time, as I think it is superior to its automatic brother. Another great Titanium Eco Drive Citizen and a perfect upgrade for my "Chandler" is the PMD-56 model range. 39mm titanium field watch, sapphire crystal, awesome lume and quick adjust clasp!

The thing with Citizen is, they see trends, they follow, but they always keep their identity. Seiko has significantly struggled with this, they have kept their identity, but they cannot seem to keep up with industry trends, this even goes up to Grand Seiko. I understand that not all companies should follow trends but some trends are just objectively better than others (4hz movements, better bracelets)

To me, Seiko hierarchy seem to have an arrogant attitude. It's like, NO, you cannot have that, you can have this, and you will like it! Sapphire? No, you will have Hardlex and like it. @@islandwatch I find it interesting. In the realm of motorcycles, the market is very competitive. As such, development/production cycles are 2 years. That is very aggressive in the industry. I feel like I'd have to store it in the heart of the sun to keep it running reliably. First Eco-Drive I've had that problem with and also the first one I've ever sent back to them. No satisfaction however and now it sits in my window sill all day, every day.

I typically purchase pre-owned. Lots of deals to be had and I like the styling of most of their older models. Having said that, it's interesting to see that used/resale prices for titanium versions, of even their least popular models, are generally double $$. Example: C650-Q02128 (Skyhawk; stainless). Typical resale is $80-$150. Last one I purchased was $75. The same watch in titanium however, C651-Q02497 (Skyhawk, titanium), typically sells for $150-$300, depending on condition and whether it comes with box/papers. The aesthetic between the two is virtually the same. They look the same. Baffling how construction materials trumps popularity in these cases. It's the same model watch no one wants to pay more than $80 for, yet they're worth twice that in titanium. No idea.

Fellow Seiko fanboy (and former Citizen fanboy) here. Not sure why Citizen took so long to take on Seiko in the non-quartz arena, but here they are: the diver is *quite* impressive, although the absolute scratch-resistance of their Super Titanium seems somewhat in dispute on yon Internets - better than Seiko's untreated Ti, certainly, but possibly not as impervious to random banging against the inevitable doorknobs and other hard objects remains to be seen. The *most* impressive tech from them lies within their Brycen line: a solar rehaut? THAT"S a big deal, and puts them ahead of Seiko and others in the rechargeable realm. As far as the Skyhawk? Looks cool from here, but for the better part of a grand to snag one? I think your business Spidey-sense is spot-on for this model. Great overview video!

Steel has always been suboptimal for large watches like divers due to its weight. Titanium offers a significant advantage in this regard, being much lighter. Even plastic-cased G-Shocks provide superior comfort because of their reduced weight. As for Citizen, their Eco Drive movements are outstanding! I do hope they keep pushing the tech forward. I'm even curious to see if they do anything interesting with the semi-abandoned CZ range.

Hello Marc. Looks to me like some of Seiko's reputation was needed to call these watches a success. None of them appeal aesthetically unfortunately.
