When I played baseball wayyyyy back in the day, I was a utility player and liked it a lot - the variety and the challenges. I can relate 💯% to your baseball analogies and also attest that co-star and day players can be really challenging. As you mentioned, I've learned it is it's own reward when not much or nothing is said after filming a scene. To me, it's an indicator I've done my job. Someone said this once about auditions, but I like to apply it to co-star and day player roles on set as well: "Be brief, be brilliant, be gone." PS: Have I told you lately that I love you and Brooke? Well, darlin' I'm tellin' you now. 😂😂🤣🤣😅😅. Thanks for the continuing insight, wisdom, and reality checks - much appreciated.

I agree the costar role feels macanical. Also, everytime I've done a costar, the director has changed my lines 1 moment before shooting or told me to improv. It throws me off, but I just do it. 🤷

Yeah I’ve come to expect something awkward on every shoot. Recently I had a scene in a van and the director notified me at the last second “oh yeah and remember the van is in motion so do some gentle swaying every now and then.” 😂😬

My very first speaking role was in “The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice”. It was one line. Had a blast shooting that one line. The cast, crew and Director (Jonathan Frakes) were amazing. I shot my line and was done when I heard Frakes say, “Great job, David. See you tomorrow.” I stopped in my tracks and said, “Excuse me?!” He laughed and said, “Wanna stick around and be turned into a vampire?” Inside my brain I was screaming “HELL YEAH!” I tried to maintain my composure and said, “Yes sir. See you tomorrow.” No cap! (I don’t even know what that means.)

Great story! Reminds me of the many times (on episodic shows) where a co-star or a makeup artist says "oh you're definitely coming back..." LOL, 100% of the time they were wrong. It's a great sentiment, but it just reinforces that Goldman quote "Nobody knows anything."

Ive been a bit of a career day player, but its allowed me to work with some A-listers and watch them at work. Even went to an NHL game with one of them after our day on set. I have had an incredibly positive experience as a day player, and often times have been thanked by the cast and crew after I've wrapped. But, youre right Matt, it is tough work. And its a true exercise in keeping your ego in check. I oftentimes have to remind myself that the scene is not about me, and do my best to stay in the scene but out of the way. Great video, Matt! Thanks as always.

Thanks, Brent! Yeah to piggyback, it’s also tough when you’re dayplaying and not only do you feel over qualified for your role, but you clearly are more qualified than the guy who is #2 on the call sheet. And then an AD yells at you thinking you’re background.

@GetTaped Matt I have a quick question for you! I trust your insight a whole lot. I got an email last Thursday evening from my agent that I had been sent to the network for approval for a supporting lead in a TV movie. I still haven't heard back as of today (Wednesday). Anytime I have been sent to the network for approval, I've gotten a response very quickly. Usually the next day. I'm a bit worried now that I didn't book it. Thoughts? Thanks Matt! Really appreciate your vids and your insight

Hmmm, I'd hope that either way, Casting would update your agent as soon as a decision was made. Because at that stage, like you said, it almost always leads to the booking. So either they're not in a rush, or the ball got dropped. I'd just gently follow up with your agent asking for any updates.

Not giving anything away; in the opening scene of Deadpool & Wolverine Ryan Reynolds remarks after a rather lengthy line from a soldier. "Death by Day Player." Loved it and of course the entire film full of this type of inside remarks.

Finally saw it Wednesday and it was great. I laughed pretty hard at the dayplayer line, and the dude with the long beard who he said doesn’t get lines, but then he said something later and Reynolds yelled “improv!?”

I'll start by saying the biggest trap with the co-star/day player roles is thinking you have to do too much to stand out. Always remembering what purpose you serve in the project is the best way to avoid that trap. Second, getting on set thoroughly prepared makes it easier to handle those curveballs. Be ready to replicate what you did in your audition, but also don't tie yourself to it. Be ready to play and be flexible. Third, I always make a point of acknowledging the crew, and director when possible, and letting them know I'm not only ready to go, but ready to take whatever they throw at me, and that this show of collaboration and confidence puts both them and myself at ease. Always remember that if you booked that role, you belong on that set. Also, I believe improv and theater experience is essential in being able to navigate last minute changes and being confident performing under pressure.

Love all your videos man. Amazing actor content. I wonder if y'all would ever consider making a video on film industry geographical discrimination? Or if there was a video I missed? As an Atlanta based actor, would definitely be interesting. Otherwise no worries and keep rocking. 🙌🤘

Geographical discrimination is a great topic. It's always been a problem in the southeast (and will continue, despite SAG-AFTRA raising awareness at the last negotiations). I'll think on it to see if I have enough to say on the topic. Thanks for watching!

I think you covered it all. I have experienced this for sure. The lead and series regulars have so much to memorize day in and day out. They normally dont reherse with a day player. So when it comes time for your first take they are normaly off, and when you cant find your cues you end up dropping your own lines. The script supervisor and director/ producers will normally never admonish that actor and many times ive been told to just "go with it" and Improvise. What i find helpful is if the main actors can at least get most of their lines then im fine with their improv and it actually helps me be more natural in my respsonses/ delivery. oh, and im still waiting for a crew to celebrate my wrap on a dayplayer role lol... funny.

yeah my last day player experience i had two days, and on my 2nd day, one of the top-billed actors was also wrapping. So he got a round of applause, and thought I was next... nope. Crickets. LOL.

I played a cop in a lifetime movie which I thought was just an extra for a scene, turns out it was a speaking role and I never got a script. I didn't know it was a speaking role until we were doing a blocking rehearsal. That's when I hold up my hand and say ,,, ah,, excuse me I have a question. I didn't know this was a speaking role and I never got a script. The AD pulls me aside while production is on hold because I have to learn my lines for the scene in 5 minutes or less. The take you see in the movie was a one take and that's the one they used. This has happen to me one other time on a show called Scandal Made Me Famous

Yikes! Those are stressful situations. Because even though others dropped the ball, suddenly all eyes are on YOU to not hold up production. Kudos for hanging in there.
