As a fellow communications student, I find myself wondering how people plan on getting through life without communicating. Honestly, communications shouldn't have such a negative image. As a society, we cannot do anything without communications. I'd say the major deserves better recognition.

I'm a rather introverted person who took a leap of faith when majoring in comm. studies. Talking and persuasion and connecting are not my strong suit..however, I would say there is more to this major than just running my mouth lol......it's a major that has several branches connected around the analyzing of behavior, artifacts, and text, etc .....it really makes you think "okay what is this message actually saying?" ...a read between the lines sort of riddle is how I see it...its easy to hear people talk (for some more than others) but to actually listen , that's where it gets more complex and where misunderstandings are likely to occur

I earned a degree in communication studies and I started to look for work in the PR field, but I could not find work in that field. After being out of school for a long time, I went back to school to earn a second bachelor's degree in computer science. I found a job in the computer science field and I've been working in that field for several years. Looking back, I wish I would have had better career planning when I was working towards my first degree. I should have explored different career options, taken advantage of different internships, and combined communication studies with other fields of study.

Like any degree/major, it all depends what you do with it while you're in school and after. I got a bachelor's degree in computer IT and it took me over 2 years to get my first IT job. Looking back, I could've gotten a help desk IT job while I was in college or even before college just to get my foot in the door. I currently work in the IT department of a large corporation while getting my master's in communications and I was told after a few classes, I can shadow the marketing team to get my foot in the door before I graduate.

Fellow Comm major here. It is true that employers are not looking for Comm majors, but as you mentioned, it is the soft skills that we learn that is transferable to most - if not all - careers. The issue is getting in the door. Comm is a good major to get an undergraduate in then going into a Master's program. It is also a good idea to get a certicate in something useful (e.g., Project Management). You mentioned Project Management but that comes in the form of a degree or certicate.

Honestly I would say focus on getting a lot of experience in right now. You're still in high school so you have time, about 2-3 years' time. If possible, attend a wide variety of oratory related events, and do your own research. I would even say go as far as starting to read an ESV or NIV Bible haha. It helps to earn a lot of knowledge and experience especially while you're still young. Also, talk to a lot of people who are older than you. Pastors, preachers, fathers and mothers, they will all have something to share with you that will mentor you. This will round you as a better overall individual. Best of luck!

And degrees in the humanities, programs like philosophy and foreign languages? They’ve declined -0.4%." I'm not talking about foreign languages, philosophy (even that they are amazing majors bcz of many things). Many countries have high unemployment in STEM including whole Asia, because not everyone needs them many stem majors are useless as F. UX/UI is a big thing with being a web developer and I still have yet to see you bringing stats showing how those majors are in demand when it currently isn't.
