If you compact the sub-base and sub-grade correctly, add enough rebars, and no abuse afterward, then concrete slab will not crack for at least 3 decades. If any surface cracks show up just weeks or months after construction, then it suggests your contractor must did some steps incorrectly. A lot of builders use the concept of concrete will crack to mislead clients. Actually, the only reason of cracks show up in new house is because your builder slacked off and skipped away from some important sub-base and sub-grade preparation steps. if builder do each step correctly, concrete slab can maintain no-cracking for at least 30 years.

@@maharenagebreslasie5596 thanks, I am sure your PHD in applied physics helped you to get there. Concrete cracks because of thermal expansion. It creates internal stress that cracks the concrete. This thermal expansion can cause serious issues in reinforced concrete where the rebar stretches significantly and breaks lose from concrete, this enables water to leak in and that will quickly erode the material, which eventually means the rebar slowly dissapears from the concrete in which case a building can collapse as it's losing it's strength. Thermal expansion cracks bridges, asphalt and many other public infrastructure. You will see engineers place gaps between concrete road slabs purely to enable concrete to expand. Same with bridges and any concrete structure you see in public is made modular so the pieces can expand as they like reducing the risk of cracks from thermal expansion. Buildings do need to be inspected regularly for cracks and problems.

Is there not something cheap you can add into the control joints to prevent this and make it level for carpets? Accepting uncontrolled cracking in the floor to prevent carpet lines...seems like there must be a better solution.

In small buildings like homes there are many reasons mostly poor quality of anything: workers, concrete mix, materials.. etc but let's say you did everything right and perfect you still going to face concrete's worst enemies Water and Vibrations, rainwater will affect your soil after 3, maybe 5 or 10 years but it's happing no matter how long your foundations survived the rain effect in the soil it's happing, two Vibrations caused by earthquakes or even cars trucks bulldozers explosions. 1mm of foundation movement can cause cracks all over the walls. how can you stop this? you can't it's normal it will happen no matter what you do.

@@pinggong3617 that's not true at all. 1, rebar does NOT stop concrete from cracking, it holds it together to keep the cracked pieces from lifting or separating. 2, sub base is very important but even with the best sub base preparation, the ground still moves and can still cause concrete to crack. Ever see a mountain? Mountains are a result of the earth moving. No amount of prep can stop that. 3, surface cracks can be caused by environmental factors when the concrete is placed, such as wind or sun. If the surface dries too quickly surface cracks will form. We don't pour concrete in a factory controlled setting after all. Also concrete is just plain brittle

The guy in the video is wrong. It is NOT normal for basement floors to crack. The likely the reason you see the cracks in the basement examples he shows is because a floating slab wasn't installed, which is what should have been done. Instead, they poured the concrete all the way up against the foundation walls (instead of leaving about a 1.5 inch gap around the perimeter), which is wrong in all but the driest areas. A floating slab allows the floor to move in the event of hydraulic pressure from the water table underneath the slab. If it can't float (i.e. shift independently), it tries to push against the foundation walls, which won't budge, and then you effectively get a buckling and then cracking of the floor. If anyone you hire tells you it's normal for basement floors to crack, get rid of that person immediately.

@@drboogienobama4999 You have no idea what you're talking about. I have a home with an 8 foot deep basement, with footings supporting the foundation walls and a floating slab. A floating slab is normally required in an environment that could subject the floor to shifting by hydrostatic pressure. It has nothing to do with whether the home has footings or not. Kindly keep your comments to yourself unless you know what you're talking about, which you obviously don't.

If I sent you a photo could you give me your opinion on a crack? My one story rancher is on a slab. I'm literally right this moment removing the carpet and tack strips from the slab for a flooring contractor to come and install LVP flooring. We purchased high end flooring so we don't have to do this crap twice. Anyway, the corner of one room of the slab has a crack just like most of the normal looking cracks you mentioned in the video. Just want an opinion. I was planning on using mortar mix to fill in the cracks after using a crack chaser blade. Thanks.
