@@MrCubassss In the classical period, gold and silver weren't useful for much beyond looking pretty, while copper, bronze and iron could be made into useful tools. You could use gold and silver for currency, but that was more a property of their relative scarcity and prettiness, and not of their material properties, and the other uses of gold and silver in that period would have been either completely unknown, or poorly understood if at all. So the idea of people pushing a deliberate lie that falsely placed the ruling class in a position of moral and intellectual superiority over commoners that did all the actual work of society, by claiming that the ruling classes had souls made of metals whose values come entirely from everyone agreeing they're valuable, while having the lower classes' souls infused with metals that actually have material value and can be used to productive ends in themselves, is hilariously ironic.

@@TheManWithTheFlan the best part, regarding the value of gold in the eyes of it cult worshippers, is that there is more gold than copper on the planet, it was just way too hard for ancients to mine it
@Jake-xe1wu

So ancient peoples, including the greeks, actually used gold pretty widely for medicine as topical preparations to treat basically everything and it worked on a surprising number of conditions. They also took it internally for a number of conditions. Of course now we know why it worked and use it extensively in the medical field and find new uses for it everyday. Also while there is technically more gold in the total volume of earth than copper we still don't have the tech to mine more gold than copper because most of it is near the core of the planet. In regards to what is reachable gold is held at the highest estimates to be a little over 1 million metric tons and copper is estimated roughly at 6.3 billion metric tons. Of course that is ignoring the amount of gold and copper in ocean water but that is less about ability and more about practicality due to sheer volumes needed to be processed. Also don't take the above for a defense of their classist additudes or what metals of worth they thought themselves. Just clarifying some things for historical and scientific record.

There has been ample evidence in the following decades and more intensely through Trump and post-Trump. I now understand what he meant. Leaders sometimes must lie, conceal, or distort the truth. It can be irresponsible not to. There are times when lives can be lost or economies ruined by ugly facts and uncomfortable truths. When bald-face lying becomes the norm, however, simply to protect the liar it compromises rational discourse, kills trust in institutions (e.g. Jan 6th), and hobbles democracy. Thank God for a free press to shine a light in dark places, however imperfectly.

Isn't the worker entitled to the full value they create? And if the owner wants a cut of that money because they own the means of production, should they not be personally responsible for A - running the machines themselves, and/or B - finding a source of income that is derived from their own labor? "Both political parties lie" American. America has only a right and a centrist party. Saying both political parties lie only serves as evidence that conservatives and centrists lie. Of course progressives lie. However, I'm not friends with any of them. This video is making the claim that only conservatives will unflinchingly continue to support a bad liar. As well as several others. Like conservative philosophy is more likely disingenuous.

Thank you for your videos, they are really nice! Sorry if that's too much but it reminded me about one thing that happened recently and I felt like writing it down. I watched it in a moment where a few days ago abortion in Poland were restricted and knowing that my mom, whose studied philosophy and goes to church every Sunday, is supporting the current government in my country I called her and asked why does she agree with new rules. Our conversation was half emotional, but we mostly focused on arguments as for her it was probably the first time in a while when I decided to debate, and I truly wanted to understand her point of view. At first, I got a casual argument "I heard a story where my friend's friend was told the child will be born disabled but it didn't". After sharing a few examples she said something that really disturbed me: "Some people don't know how to chose the right thing and it's important to decide for them". It led me to explain to her that banning something isn't an answer - what will help with those decisions is educating people what is wrong and right, as those who are "bad" won't be helped anyway. It also comes with the big problem of government completely banning sexual education in Poland where at the same time they constantly remind that we have to do families and a lot of kids. It feels like giving young people a car but not telling them how to drive and later they are praised for driving it good or shamed for making an accident. In the end, I got very upset because the last thing she said was "I don't know what is right or wrong. I can't tell you who is making the right decision." It was clear for me she gave the decision in "God's hands", as she herself used to run away from many responsibilities, but I can't blame her knowing that the country she lived in bullied her to be like that. To support those who told her "suffering is something you need to accept". Of course in this case it goes to the extreme. If someone who educated themselves in areas such complicated as philosophy and history is finding the blessing in being controlled and having someone who makes decisions for them, it always makes me feel that educational as such has nothing to do with being human. Maybe being manipulated feels less lonely and scary and in the right place knowing that all this knowledge didn't help you build any connection, which usually people like my mom supports those "greater" ideas... It's a lie but it's their lie and they can feel comfortable in it knowing there are others who agree with them and they don't have to make any mental effort to change it.

I think there is an important difference between Plato's noble lie and what's going on now in conservatism. Plato's noble lie was a (regrettable?) means to what Plato thought was a good end. With Trump/Putinism lying is the point. There is no greater good the lying is a regrettable means to. For Trump/Putin lying is a display of power, which attracts authoritarians like moths to light. Nothing turns on authoritarians more than pointless, senseless lying.

I dare disagree - nobody believes themselves to be a villain, so I'd say that even though conservatists are more bold, insolent even, or worse - powerhungry, they still mean well, and believe that them being on top would be beneficial to everyone. Granted, even when faced with evidence to contrary, like *cough* people not enjoying abuse of police power *cough* they just enter denial. So my take is that they mean well but are arrogant and dellusional and those 2 are what makes a difference between them and Plato.

For my part, I have despaired of finding politicians who care about truth. I gave up after I realized both Trump and Hillary were terrible candidates, but that nothing in Washington really changed under Trump (despite his constant protestations to "drain the swamp"). I wouldn't vote at all, if it weren't my grudging duty, as a god-forsaken citizen in this god-forsaken country, to try to have some effect on things. One choice is presently only marginally better than the other. Both stink. One of failure, the other of malice.
@Alphapigeon8881

I have a feeling that people who lie to themselves are more likely to accept/not care if they are lied to by who they support. Think of it like this, there are lots of people who have a predetermined outlook on the world, where evidence and logic don't dictate their views but their predetermined views and beliefs dictate what logic and evidence they can accept. As an example imagine someone who holds the belief that Britain is a great empire and brexit is the only right way forward, this person is far less likely to question pro brexit and tory statements. Even if this brexit supporter knows a given pro brexit statement is a lie i think it's still hard for them to emotionally accept the greater ramifications of being lied to. Remember, they know without a doubt brexit is good, that it is not a lie, so even when (in their mind) small inconsistencies pop up it can only be a fluke or they may even accept it as part of the tory strategy. Some tory voter may actually realize lies but accept them to be of a noble kind whereas the politicians themselves who are lying just do it because.

@@cloudatlas349 unfortunately, that's not really how quantum computing works. There are definitely algorithms involved, and they're even more tricky than ones classical computers use. Additionally, we can't just input all data, there is a fixed size of data (the qubit count). And furthermore, what we put in and take out cannot be qubits in superposition, they collapse when we measure them and we input binary digits (bits) into the process too. The superposition only exists during the computation, and doesn't necessarily lead to the correct answer either, it merely parallelises an otherwise serial search process. And they cannot determine absolute truth. Going further, quantum computers are only faster than classical computers for very specific tasks, which right now largely seem to involve simulating other quantum systems. To get data out of a quantum computer, you measure it, but that collapses the superposition. So you run it and measure it a bunch of times, and what you end up with is a probability spread. To use two completely made up numbers, maybe there's peaks for "2" and peaks for "341.5". Depending on your calculation, you may be able to rule one of them out. But many times you can't, so you're just stuck with "40% 2; 60% 341.5", albeit with more than just two options in the real world. And that's not even getting into how, due to random thermal noise which is itself caused by quantum randomness, we need a great many physical qubits to properly represent just one logical qubit in a system.

Dorian sapiens of course for whom is a relevant question and I would never want to suggest otherwise. And yeah that’s good point which I saw on PhilosophyTube the other week actually. Tying that in with the concept of the hopelessness of fascists covered on this channel and others, I suppose its logical to expect these people to do some of the political things they do just because, such as anti-semitism. What was in my mind though were things along the lines of establishing a white ethno-state, which are done out of genuine, though genuinely wrong, belief that its the right thing to do. Then again, do fascist really believe in terms of justness or do they only justify in those terms, which are wrongly thought out? I don’t know. They could genuinely be fooling themselves that they are being logical out of anger deriving from that hopelessness

@@Jokkkkke It seems to me that fascists don't have the same sense of justice. Generally speaking, further right on the political spectrum is closer to the philosophy of power for power's sake. Morality and justice are taken to be naive notions (illusions existing primarily for the purpose of enforcing the will of the powerful), and power is seen as the clear focus of the movement. This is a big part of the reason for their successes. I think this relates to their seeming inability to abstract concepts away from their current constitution. That is, in observing that the police are part of a system of power and not justice, and that they're labelled part of "the justice system," they conclude that justice itself, the very concept, is a mere tool of manipulation and an extension of the ruling will. I suppose it's sort of Nietzschean. Personally, I'm also suspicious of certain elements of Marxism, specifically its rejection of the ideal and pure focus upon the material. I think these forms of reasoning run parallel.

When I watched the Dark Knight (I worked in a cinema so I saw it over 50 times) it seemed obviously a Watchmen inspired take down of Batman. It shows that Batman and Joker are no better than each other. As Joker says, they need each other - as he explains why they would never kill each other. Batman's action are portrayed as morally suspect, as the Morgan Freeman character points out when Batman wants to use everyone's phones to catch the Joker. Also remember at the start when the copycat vigilantes say they're just trying to help? Batman says he doesn't need any help. The vigilante says "that's not my diagnosis". So right from the start the movie portrays Batman as an out of control nutter. The subtext borrowed from Alan Moore
