As an in-between episode for my indie game devlogs, I wanted to quickly talk about the rise of NFT video games and NFT game development. An NFT is a non-fungible token on a decentralized blockchain. Basically an NFT is just a unique block of data that can be traded between addresses on a blockchain. Since all NFTs are just blocks of data, they can be represented by almost anything. But just because you own the NFT of something, does not mean you own any legal copyright to that block of data.
There has been an immense rise in the amount of chatter about NFT game development and NFTs in video games in general. This makes sense from game dev publishers, as it provides another way to monetize your game. But the real question is ... why?
Why add all of this integration into your video game?
Some people may argue that NFT and broadly crypto-related video games provide an option for people to make money within a video game they like. But is this a good option? Aren't video games supposed to be an escape from the daily grind? Alternatively, NFT games and game development has the opportunity to provide more financial opportunities to people across the world.
I think the most realistic use of NFTs in video games and game development are purely as cosmetic items. But cosmetic cash shops in games have received an overall negative perception by players. Additionally, is it worth to spend software engineering resources building out this blockchain integration versus working on the actual gameplay features?
This video isn't meant to criticize either side, but at this time I can't think of a reason to integrate crypto into my indie game. In addition to not originally creating the art (I purchased from an artist), I don't believe NFTs or crypto would make the game any more fun for the player. I do think the technology is really interesting and would make a fun side project, but may not be the best feature to add to a video game (at least right now)!
Let me know what you think about NFT game development in the comments below!
