Good insight and David is truly inspiring. Just one remark, when someone drowns on a frozen lake and recover later there is no freezing involved and therefore no ice crystals causing cell damage. That's one of the main problems in the current cryopreservation techniques. What we could learn from his amazing physiology may someday help develop stasis technology for keeping patients in stable conditions during transport or in the operation table or even trough long space travels. We go deep on JRE 🙂

The “trick” is it’s a pure oxygen breath hold meaning they inhale pure o2 before the attempt making it much easier. The world record currently for pure o2 hold is 24:37 and normal o2 is 11:34. So David could probably do a 8:30 hold on normal o2
@omarz2145

He's pretty much describing whim hoff breathing technique. Inhale fully through the nose and exhale slowly, repeat 30 times, after 30 expel all oxygen from your lungs and hold it as long you can, then take huge breath in and hold that for 15 seconds. Do three or 4 sets of that, at the end of it you get a euphoric feeling along with the benefits that deep breathing brings.

So, in anesthesia school right now, and we use similar principles. When we're about to put a person under and place a breathing device, we pre-oxygenate with 100% in until they're breathing at least 80% oxygen out. If they're a healthy adult, that gives us about 8-9 minutes of the patient not breathing at all of buffer time before their oxygen levels start dropping to a concerning level.

I was meditating to myself in the school canteen at 13 (I was one of the cool kids...). Got into this state where I felt totally relaxed holding my breath for as long as possible. Completely blacked out into my macaroni cheese & potato salad.

@6:10 there can be some fact to this story as the colder water would help in this effect but the rehearing process from coming out of the cold temperature would be the key if the person would survive...

I drowned as a kid, and yes it was euphoric. Not in a rush but an absolute calm. I can't describe it, it was the best feeling ever after i stopped thrashing, abd before I blacked out
