Many credit scoring models will ignore collection debts that have been disputed when they're considering your credit.
However, it can play a part if you're applying for a loan.
Debt collectors hate to mark your account as disputed because they lose leverage to collect from you.
If your credit score keeps tanking because of a debt, you may be tempted to just pay the collector just to get rid of the debt.
Every month, these collectors have to update your account, and if they refuse to mark your account as disputed AFTER you have disputed, then you can sue them.
Fighting them is worth your time.
Keep a record of everything.
Send your letters to them via certified mail.
Gather as much evidence as you can to prove your case.
Pull your credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com/in... and find out if they update your reports accurately after you dispute with them.
