Why Did God Allow the Altar Only on Mt Ebal?
"Therefore it shall be, when you have crossed over the Jordan, that on Mount Ebal you shall set up these stones” (Dt 27:4).
God ordered Moses that when the people of Israel entered the Promised Land, they divided the 12 tribes into two groups and made each stand in front of Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal. Then, after proclaiming the Law, a blessing was to be announced to the six tribes standing on Mt. Gerizim and a curse to the other six tribes standing on Mount Ebal.
And God ordered to build a stone altar only on Mount Ebal. Why did He so? Why did He not allow the altar on Mt Gerizim?
That incident teaches us the principle of salvation only grace.
Only the poor in spirit confess honestly, "I am a wretched one to go to hell before the Law." Such an honest person lefts Mount Gerizim and grasps the altar of the burnt offering on Mount Ebal to be saved by the remission of sins.
But most Christians stand proudly on Mt Gerizim to the end. "I can keep the Law thoroughly," they cry out bravely. They are the rich in their self-righteousness. Such people can never receive salvation by the remission of sins from God.
