I like renting Harley’s when I’m driving through a state to visit but my local ride here in Philly is a triumph bonneville which is good for around town and up to 75-100 mile ride. I also rented an Indian and found it to be better outfitted and engineered but far too few service centers. I do love the sound and feel of an American v twin. I would consider the Indian chief but it doesn’t come with saddle bags and the used triumph I bought did. I would consider a BMW. Congratulations on your purchase

Nice purchase!! I just purchased a 2021 BMW S1000XR a few months ago after being out of motorcycles since 09. I couldn't believe how much things had changed in those 12 yrs. Is was another world all together. I retired and moved down to SC in 2020 and decided to get back into motorcycles. I struggled with the question of which bike to buy for the last 2 yrs. Finally decided on BMW. I looked at all brands including HD and you are correct. By the time I was done upgrading everything I needed to on an HD I would've been into the 40K plus range. Not to say my Beemer was not expensive but you don't have to start upgrading everything on it the way you have to on the HD. Have fun on your new ride.... ✌✌✌

Well said. I am an experienced rider and missed having a cruiser in the fleet, so I decided on an 18 Road Glide Special, my first H-D. Got a great deal on it, and am enjoying it so far - but I'll have to put about $5K into it just to make it functionally sufficient (like you said - lighting, suspension, etc.). I don't understand how anyone could drop over $30K for one of these new. The riding experience is indeed special and the bike is beautiful, but the verdict is still out.

Hey Mike. I totally get where you’re coming from. I had a Road King and went to look at a SG and RGs for full faired bike for long distance touring. I ended up with a 21’ Goldwing. The only downside of going with the GW is I have nothing to upgrade for fun and customization. Great vid bro and best of luck on your new beemer!

Glad to see a Harley guy made this video. I struggled for a long time because I would love to ride a Harley but ended up with a Yamaha star venture and I can not justify replacing it with a Harley. The money side of the Harleys is stupid. Why are you paying 30000 for a bike with inferior suspension and lights when there are cheaper cc bikes with all of those things. The Yamaha Roadstar is as close as you can get to a Harley, and they are more reliable. But I see parts becoming an issue. I plan to keep my vintage Harleys for the rest of my life. I feel very lucky to have them. It is almost impossible to find an EVO Harley anymore, and there are still plenty of aftermarket parts, including complete engines and transmissions.
@philburge563

First, I really like my Road Glide. Second, there is absolutely no reason HD can’t build a bullet proof motor. Metrics do it and Euro’s do it. It’s about inferior parts. Translation: cheap. Let’s say the equivalent Metric/Euro is $20k to a SG or RG at $30k. You are paying $10k for the name. HD knows they can sell it.

I enjoyed the video. IMHO, no "need" to explain why you switched, but it's good to see/hear the reasons people like one bike vs another. To me, having good choices is the great thing. Both H-D & BMW make some great bikes and have loyal fans. Both brands also have their detractors. While it's nice to have friends that like your bike, it's not necessary to like the same bikes to be friends and enjoy riding together. I'm glad you made it back to riding. Interesting take. Me being new to Harleys coming from sportbikes, I have to say Harley gives you the basic platform to build on. You have to dump a lot into a Harley to get it where you want to be. I had a BMW K1200R in the stable for a while. It was a solid performer. The only thing I added was a slip-on. It was ready out the box. Along with the Japanese bikes l’ve had, all were ready without having to do much to them. Congrats on your purchase. Very nice bike.

Nice explanation! I have ridden my whole life and never owned a Harley. I have ridden many of them over the years, including a $43,000 EVO Street Glide. All of my riding buddies ride Harleys. I have no brand affiliation, but currently own Japanese iron. I have owned just about everything but Harley, including some European brands. I mostly grew up and rode during the time in which Harleys always had issues, even going back to when they all leaked oil. Then, as you commented about having to put so much money into them after paying so much to begin with. I really wish they had been better when I was growing up; especially being made in America, but they left a sour taste in my mouth, probably forever. The best road bikes I have ever owned were Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha. Cheaper, more reliable, and with more features. It's just a fact. Thanks for the video.

I agree and also I know the GS is light years ahead of Harley-Davidson bikes. The first time I road the BMW F 750 GS I realised how much is on offer at far lesser cost than Harley… the suspension, magnificent brakes,cruise control, quick shifter, the comfortable seat(it’s like a Cadillac with click of a button), just the feeling of owing a great piece of engineering Marvel… I went to the BMW store riding a Harley-Davidson suffering tail bone pain… The BMW Guy gave me the GS and asked me to ride anywhere and only make sure to get back by 5 pm else I will have to take care of the bike until next day . I rode the bike 100 kms ( highway, city and country road). How many HARLEY-DAVIDSON bikes can you ride 100 kms and get back with a bit of ass soreness or shoulder hurt or hip twist….There was no pressure on tail bone and the I enjoyed the tech, the brakes, the whole ride was a bliss…the bikes different modes of suspension is a too good( we spend 1000s of $$$ on stupid crappy Harley-Davidson bike suspension out of the showroom just to sit on it for a 60 mins ride).. I never had a tailed bone issue until I bought a Harley……I decided then my next bike is not a Harley….so many companies offer so many better deals( triumph, Yamaha, Ducati, Honda, BMW)….All Harley-Davidson bikes are incomplete( I cannot understand why they do it)… you do not even get a basic good seat…. I never buy a harley again unless they have a better value proportion…….Harley-Davidson just is not doing good enough…. BMW is very good bike….the 1250 is even better… the 850 adventure is also a gem of a bike … you will be able to travel longer distance and you will enjoy the ride… congratulations… I’m saving up for the same bike…

Nice video Mike. Last year I was looking to buy a Sport Glide. Like you, I had been out of the motorcycle game for many years (30 years) and just had the Harley brand stuck in my head. When I started comparing brands in terms of costs and what you get for that cost, Harley quickly faded into the background. I still love the look and sound of Harley, but they are too expensive and as you pointed out, lack many of the modern tech that comes standard with other bikes. I ended up buying a BMW R 1250 RS for $4,000 less than what the Sport Glide was going to cost. I’ll still considering a V-twin as a second bike for the cruiser riding position, forward controls and sound, but I would go Indian not Harley. The local Indian dealer here in Austin has a bunch of Harley trade ins for sale. Seems the number of people jumping ship is growing. Thanks for posting and enjoy the ride.

Yeah, I switched also, from an Electra Glide to my Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom LT. Think HD Road King and it is Kawasaki's answer to HD. The bike rides just as comfortable, less expensive to buy, to accessorize, and to maintain. Regrets??? None. BTW, I've owned three HD's, two were EG's. To be honest, I did replace the seat with a Mustang touring seat.

I joined a few BMW GS forums and so far, have heard nothing but good things as it pertains to these bikes. I personally have had no issues, but I haven’t had it long enough to really give a personal experience answer to how reliable they are. In terms of cost of ownership? It’s a BMW. The scheduled maintenance is about $100 more than Harley, but the customer service is so much better, from what I’ve experienced.

I also have not been happy with HD for a long time and now I am on my fifth bike a 15 Limited, so you spend 23k+ only to add a rear suspension that will run $700 to 1200 depending on brand and a better seat but Indian you can get a touring model without doing all that.

@@patricklambert112 HD is a rip off. I test road a 2021 Road Glide with the 114, then I test road a 2021 Indian Road Master with the 116. They were nowhere close in power. For a 114, I was kind of disappointed. The Road Glide was 32K and the Indian 30K. To get the road glide to where that Indian was, you would have to add LEDs, suspension, stage 2-4. That’s probably 5-8K in addition to the cost of the bike. Not worth it.

I'm not a Harley-Davidson boy but I can understand where Harley-Davidson is coming from. The problem that Harley-Davidson has is that Harley-Davidson riders don't often like change. They have a very OG type of crowd and a very OG style every time they come out with a new bike like the new Sportster s or the Pan America not everyone gets behind it and the price isn't always cheap enough to where the younger generation can. A lot of the OG's crap on all the newer bikes. So Harley is force to always make a newer bike that resembles an older style. If the Harley-Davidson riders don't allow change, they're going to bring their company down. This is something I have always said
