Archbishop Emeritus Peter Kairu sits in his retirement home in Nyeri with a pensive mind. My questions have taken him back to his service as the Bishop of Nakuru. I can tell that he has many memories of the diocese, most of them, bitter memories. His diocese had been a hotbed of tribal clashes for years.
It was during his service that Fr. John Kaiser was killed. To date, no one has ever been convicted. It was also during his tenure that Fr Kamau was killed in the 2007/2008 post elections together with many other kenyans.
The bishop tried to plead with the government to stop the fighting but nobody listened. At one time, Archbishop Peter Kairu threatened to curse the elders of the area if they didn't stop the fighting. Did he curse them? On the legends, we celebrate a soft spoken man but who openly spoke against social injustices.
