Very cool cage! I don't know much about pigeons specifically- but I would recommend a bird- safe branch which has been de-barked and sterilized (there are plenty of tutorials for that on YT, and it's relatively simple). Having variation in the way they grip surfaces will prevent bumblefoot. I would also recommend to remove the mirror- most birds cannot recognize their reflection and can become very territorial or see their reflection as the potential mate, and stress them out. I hope the birds do well, they are absolutely gorgeous!

@@galacticazr2744 as far as I'm aware only a few pigeons have been able to pass the mirror test in a single study for which they had been previously trained. Regardless of whether or not they consider the reflection a conspecific as previously mentioned, I still think it will most likely hinder their breeding efforts so it'd probably be best to remove it!

Your arid climate is likely the reason the egg failed. I would add a good bathing pool to your coop. Moisture is important to hatching eggs.

@BlackndRaynesAshley

@@Weedemandreap they need almost a 80-90% humidity while hatching because the membrane can dry out so fast, especially in a smaller bird like a pigeon, and almost become like a cement.

Quick tip! Have a deep water dish so the mother can bathe and then lay on the nest afterwards. Humidity is SUPER important through the hatching process. Also birds can become obsessed with their reflection so mirrors aren’t the best idea! Very adorable setup ☺️
@SnekAAA
2 жыл бұрын
Just commenting to second the mirror! Basically for all birds, mirrors are bad. Intelligent birds will think its a mate and get frustrated that they cant mate with it or they will think its a bird to fight (male vs male, female vs female). While it gets their attention and they're curious about it, it doesn't encourage good behaviors and typically frustrates the bird. The reason it causes this is because they don't realize it's them, only magpies can recognize themselves in the mirror
@katmacie2369

Very good points! Mirrors and string are awful for birds. String so often becomes tangled around their feet or heads and causes severe issues.
@xxkenzie_x

@@SnekAAA that’s what I thought too. I have more of an eye for animals such as rats, rabbits, bettas and really the only bird I know much about are parakeet and I know it’s bad so I looked it up and google said it was fine and they can recognize themselves but you can only trust that so much. Definitely would say taking it out is the better choice.

It is so hot there; it is a wonder that anything hatches. once it gets over 100 degrees it can dry out the eggs and then they don't finish hatching right. Maybe now that the temperature is a bit lower the pigeons may be more successful. Hope Ethan comes back to visit them when they do.

Love that fancy pigeon cage it’s so cute 😊 with the chickens I would keep an eye on number 6. One way we always told roosters from hens is the tail feathers usually grew quicker and longer. Now, I’m used to different breeds of chickens so it might not be accurate. Also check the spurs. Here’s hoping you lucked out and managed to produce only hens that would be awesome 🤞

9 is definitely rooster. 3 and 6 might be a male due to the big crown but they don’t really have the red face of a male. It might take abit more time for them to develop the red face. You can tell if it's a male base on the crown and the red face.

The pigeon coop looks awesome! I would suggest taking the mirror out though. They don't recognize themselves in the mirror and they will either think they have a rival trying to impinge on their territory which can lead to obsessive or aggressive behavior or they will become enamored with the bird they see in the mirror which will definitely lead to hormonal issues. Trust me, you do NOT want a hormonal bird!

I seriously love those little carts. I had one while living in Portland (Oregon) and it could hold up to 250 lbs. If I had something covering the sides to keep it from spilling out, I would have to joke with the people (mainly on the public bus) that they don't have to worry, I don't have a dead sailor in there lol (my grandpa's favorite joke) I was complimented a lot on it and had to explain the dead sailor joke to some. Apparently not everyone has a grandfather that jokes about measuring trunk space with dead sailors.
