Just a heads up guys if you are coming down here to comment about LoL removing Runes. Yes, I know. That is specifically why I picked League of Legends as a case study. Riot coming in and nuking a system they had for 9 years was a pretty clear indicator to me that they agreed with the Pay 2 Win-ness of the old system and had to make changes. They have had a big push lately to attract new players, and fixing that part is a big part of it. So far the new system looks like it solves that, and I am playing some games to research it now. I will get a video out in the future on the new system. But just know that I specifically chose LoL as the example because they were making those changes to the game.

Regardless, your analogy of League's OG rune system as a P2W is null. You couldn't purchase runes with money, only in-game currency, IP, earned by playing the game.

@CMDRCyrious

You could buy IP boosts, which is the exact same thing as buying runes directly. Pay money, gain mechanical advantage faster, definition of P2W.
@Kingnothing818
6 жыл бұрын
I did forget about those, however they still changed the system to where all tier 3 runes were dirt cheap about 2 years ago, and now of course free. So progress for sure, but ya, I see the p2w aspect now. Getting enough IP to buy meta runes didn't take too long though, by the time you were 30 back in the day, you could buy a full meta runepage for 80% of champs.
@thelonecabbage7834
6 жыл бұрын
But runes were so easy to acquire the IP boosts were worthless. Furthermore, the ceiling was so low, everyone ended up on equal footing by level 30 regardless. There's no advantage here. I've spent well over $200 on league, but would never waste my money on IP boosts when there's so many sexy cosmetics I want. XD

Planetside 2 isn't dead yet, but the decisions down the road and lack of marketing have sealed its fate to fade away into obscurity. Chances are it will take the slow death on the original game. You already know all the issues of the game as a veteran player, and some of them are hard to fix or just plain ignored. Marketing is important as hell. Lore is important as hell, games like TF2, and Overwatch just making characters shine and making the world shine. To be ignored just reduces the depth of the game. The reality in my head is PS2 released too early, was mismanaged with its priorities, and did too little too late. Now in the later cycles of updates developers are focused on pointless weapon/vehicle balance rather than the entire flow of the open world which is a huge issue so many players want to tackle and share ideas upon. I think player retention wise its impossible to make an open world FPS survive and succeed. Most players play ranked games on lower ranks specifically to hide from the players that will slaughter them. Players want a challenge and not to be defeated constantly. You can't have that in Planetside. It takes a very tough person to be unskilled in the PS2 world and fight those veterans. Mechanically the game shot itself in the foot early on with so many performance and rendering issues. A lack of marketing helped us not get any new players. The developer interaction went from great to nonexistent. I understand the PS2 Reddit is a toxic place, but its really bad when developers feed into toxicity and the trolling. To stay relevant in the modern gaming world you need updates that matter. Content, improvements, solid polish, communication from devs. Games like Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch and TF2 show so much effort towards their game but they are also triple A. I don't enjoy Warframe but they hit the nail on the head as far as adding more enjoyment to the game. I await the next modern MMOFPS but I see it will suffer the same fate if someone can't control zerging and player flow in some way.

People talk about how nerfing weapons will make the game more balanced, and better for the new person. I think we should encourage the opposite. Make the weapons slightly more lethal instead of nerfing them to the ground. My idea is this, the new player flanked the vet, but the vet turned around and put 5 headshots into the noob because of his experience. With the higher weapon damage, the vet is more likely to die, and the noob gets his moment of glory. Also, the headshot mechanic need to be removed entirely, except for sniper rifles, but the torso up mechanic needs to stay.

The biggest reason I thiiiink that there never has really been justified, large scale advertising for Planetside is that it has never has been in a high quality form to show off. The fundamentals are still lacking for the devs to justify showing off the game outside of very targeted platforms like social media/gaming personalities back at release. Player retention, performance, weapon balance and extended features have all needed to be worked on in the past couple years which if finally brought up to a better standard might get the game a chance again at being shown to a largely ignorant audience. 5 years is a looooooooong time even for previous players who dropped it and for everyone else who was not exposed, the game is ripe for over aweing them into the concept and greatness that Planetside does have under the problems

Short answer: Warframe is based on a cooperative, small-squad, PVE model with ever-evolving content. Planetside 2 is based on a competitive, large-scale, "struggle" model with trees of unlockable equipment and "certs." Imagine if Warframe allowed the high Mastery Rank players to go around one-shotting the newcomers in the middle of trying to complete their objectives. Cooperative games with excellent communities and cosmetic unlocks (as well as friendly developers) tend to succeed where the PVP grindfests with a three-way divided community (at -least-) and further breakdown based upon servers and organized versus solo... fail.

Another massive plus point for warframe is thr fact that you can trade it’s in game currency with other players. As it is, players can trade for the platinum in warframe by selling other things they have.

Even though non starting weapons aren't massively imbalanced the reason I only play planetside off and on is weapon cost. The amount of hours you have to devote to the game to unlock even a single weapon starts to make the game monotonous when you have limited weapons and mods to have fun with. It would be fine if the weapons could be purchased with real money at a worthwhile cost but when a single gun for a single faction possibly for a single class costs 7 dollars or more there is really no reason to drop money in. This is the main reason that myself and the people I play with such a hard time playing consistently.

Weapon cost is usually sited as a big problem for Planetside.
@cleansweepgaming2564

I think weapon cost is pretty appropriate. The amount you earn from auraxiuming a weapon is enough to buy the next, and once you add in all the capture bonuses, heal xp, ammo xp, point hold xp, and so forth, you can usually have more than enough certs for anything you want. Playing in a squad is even better because you get all those boosts from squadmates with memberships. If weapons were cheaper, you would progress through the game faster than you mastered its quirks and the myriad of possible unique playstyles.

Daybreak as a company has the money to make PlanetSide better. The game makes enough, it just doesn't go back into this game most of the time. Sometimes it does though, and even then their effort are misguided, and they don't get the return so they don't get any more money directed their way. Take the construction system and Combined Arms for example...
@FIammen

I believe they should but in more effort to make the game more rewarding in a sense. They did it with the new alert system. But try imagine if they made a point system where each faction or outfit could compete in performance for 6 or 12 month and get reward depending on their result. Sort of like LoL in that regard. How hard would it be for Daybreak to make an awesome cosmetic for the top contenders once or twice a year? Something so cool that it draws players into squad play and the competition for annual or 6 month rewards. EDIT 1: Throwing in more ideas.. Maybe some special suits with a glow as the main reward. All outfit members @ the time of winning receives it. If the outfit loses in the next cycle they will keep the suit, but the awesome glow or visual extra effect will be turned off. They can get it back by getting back into lead position once again.

The reason why I chose Warframe over Planetside 2 came down to how the grind took place and how certain goals took place. While Planetside 2 offered a unique world to me, where it was an endless freeroam battle that intrigued me and was amazing and it really captivated me in the game, the problem lied in how I progressed in the game and how I came to level up in the game. The levelling system was fine, not the worst thing ever, but acquiring the points to get good gear and the desired and various attachments for each class was tedious to me and turned me off from the game. It stook too much to that idea that free-to-play games should be a grind in order to compensate for the price of playing the game; the more you play or the more you pay is the better you get to what you want or need. Warframe was one of my first free-to-play games and is still one of my most played games for 2 years now. What I realized about Warframe that is different and more enjoyable is the fact that even though there is a grind, it's a grind hidden behind this wall of the learning curve, where while your weapon is not at it's optimal performance and it takes a while to get there, that grind you spend with the weapon or Warframe is well spent on learning how to use it, learning it's lay of the land, and overall learning more about the weapon, which will lead you to finding ways that you want to make the weapon better or if you want to keep the weapon or not. And most of all, it's all free and less tedious. Crafting weapons and resource collecting proves to be a more gratifying choice and playee experience than slaving away with mediocre weapon gear to gring for points to spend on attachments and might not even make the game better. I love the idea of Planetside 2; it's a fresh concept that is fun, but it is tedious to me and unenjoyable while I just can't seem to have fun with Warframe and it seems like there is always something for me to do in that game.

As a Warframe player and lover, and also a game designer, I have to just say the new player experience is baaaaaad in Warframe. It leaves you very under equipped to handle the many critical systems the game contains and as a game designer it is slightly upsetting, and that is before we get to the more "end game" systems like Arcanes or Focus schools. What it nails however is selling that power fantasy out of the gate. Planetside 2 though, yeah it's terrible there. You nailed it better than I could. I mainly left PS2 because it felt like it was getting stagnant. WF, do I run out of new content to play with? Constantly, I am an MR24, I need the three hardest grinds in the game, a small amount of Archwing, and vaulted (no longer easily accessible in the game without trading with other players) content to get to the current MR cap of 25. Thing is, its gameplay loop gets touched up more often than PS2 does, I feel the changes happen regularly enough that I don't get up and leave because just a few things change enough or get added that it feels different. I take short breaks for a week or two sometimes, logging in to get my reward for logging in and running bounties my app tells me are up that I want the rewards of, but that core loop is still rewarding to play. PS2? It is the same today as it was at launch, it needs to me more than it was at launch, and while technically true it doesn't feel like it is more. It feels like the same or maybe even less. It doesn't feel like an evolving or growing experience, it feels like it's merely maintained. All of this honestly came down to one thing: PS2 didn't market itself correctly and ran out of money. WF nailed the marketing, made more money, did more marketing, keeps making money and as a result keeps going.

One problem with your player-stats. You state STEAM stats only. For its first year or more, Planetside wasn't on steam, and many people (myself included) still run the original stand-alone client and don't run through steam.
@CMDRCyrious
6 жыл бұрын
I am well aware of the massive flaws in steam stats. I don't use steam to launch any game myself. It doesn't accurately count PC players, and it doesn't even consider the myriad of X-Box players, or PS4 players. BUT, its about the only tool there is to remotely compare games. There is no other place where you can get apples to apples population statistics. Steam charts represent some fraction of each games population, and you have to mentally add to that fraction to reach their real player base. If Steam is showing 100,000 active Warframe players, imagine how many more there are on PC PS4 and Xbox. If PS2 is showing 2700, well there probably aren't more than 5000 between PS4 and PC.

PlanetSide's grown tremendously. A major issue was based on team to team miscommunication, and things were delayed. Certain aspects like raising lethality, thermals, and lock on range back up still need to be addressed, but it's becoming more and more diverse and user friendly. Just remember that the game is ultimately what the player basis makes of it. A bored skyguard driver can roll up to an amp station and easily get 120 TR fighting about 50 VS watching your back. I've had an idea for a while now to make a machinima that had the same type of quality the trailer had. This would introduce lore and keep the audience engaged in a story that revolved around three factions. Maybe some day I'll have the time to do it or put a script up just to see anyone do it. It hasn't left me since the time I first watched the trailer and played the game. I've been so passionate about this game and these ideas even though I haven't played the game in a few months.

You can't escape the context it was made in as Cyrious mentions; free to play structures were all the rage when the game was going through inception/creation. It's been both a boon and a curse of course but regardless, it is not the fundamental issue with the game. As Cyrious argues, it is really down to investment in the game financially, mechanically and popularly. With the rough transitioning from one company form into another (which is sort of a miracle by most comparisons, most companies flat out shut down when sold off), Planetside 2 specifically has never been allowed a solid foundation of lets say more than half a year to really leap frog a head before running into festering balance/technical/population/external issues from making the developers need to focus attention on repair of the situation instead of additions and population consistently lost and stagnate rather than grow grass roots style for each server (the great filter of players has left us with a very select portion of long term players and everyone else either a short pop in or a never play again sort of audience).
@vietdong2552

Planetside as a concept needs free to play because it needs big player numbers. If it was just a couple of vets hanging out it would feel like every base was its own server and that would completely destroy the whole point of planetside.

chris lowis no because then there wouldn’t be enough players, and then the game never would have survived the first year. Plus, the average amount of money spent for everyone that does spend money on a f2p game is $67 (2014) so it technically makes more money per person, with the added bonus of just more people

Pay 2 Play is going to kill PlanetSide 2. Most of Pay 2 Play games revolve around lobby fights, rather than open world, so lack of players doesn't seem that much. But as soon as free players will leave PS2 you will see empty continents, barely holding squad vs squad battles. Even EVE online had to implement F2P model because player base who paid has been drastically reduced, despite the efforts of constant development and marketing.

Make a list of pros and cons of warframe and you will see that it is one of the best games on the market. I listed 17 pros and 3 cons. One of the main pros of Warframe is the relationship of respect, friendship and complicity between the developers and their players. Warframe developers value and listen to their customers like no other company I've met in the gaming market. In recent years, I bought Arch Age, Black Desert, Albion, EVE and BF1, but they brought me more sorrows than joys, they did not listen to the demands of the customers. So I went back to Warframe which brings me more joys than sorrows, listens to me and beyond is free. For players who like PvE more than PvP, Warframe is one of the best multiplayer in the world.

Still, the game left a bad taste in my mouth and I stopped playing after a few days and won't go back to it. I'm a part of a very fun outfit in PS2 that has managed to make it's own thing out of the sandbox that is Planetside. Those people are what keeps bringing me back even when the game gets fruatrating.

I love both these games, even if, in concepts, they are polar opposites. Warframe, a game I've been playing for almost 4 years now, is highly PvE based, heavy emphasis on cooperation between players. Planetside 2 is massive PvP that I love already, having played it for about 4 months now, mass warfare on a grandiose scale. And it also has major reliance on team effort, even if it is pvp, which is nowadays just the running around madly and shooting at everything that moves in a small map. I really hope Planetside gets more attention, and connects more with its community. I want this game to succeed, and to keep going.

Planetside 2 failed because they are terrible at introducing new content compared to warframe. It fees like warframe drops a little bit of new content every few weeks or has some reoccurring in-game event, and in the 2 years that I played planetside 2 (2014-2016) the only new content that was memorable was the valkyrie aircraft. Sure they put out hossin in that time, but everybody only went to hossin when indar was locked. At the end of the day, the game dies if they don't constantly put new little bits of content out. This goes for pretty much every game ever

I played the hell out of Warframe. And mainly I realized that it's not a game at all. It's more like just the grind. There's a few snippets of story missions in there, but even those are very lackluster compared to any story driven game. Basic mission quality is very low and very simple. It's literally just the shiny stuff that it distributes so well. The carrot it hands out when you spend time and money on it. That part they do really well. I just wish they'd get some real mission structure in there...

It's a lot like a shooter variant of Diablo/PoE style looter. The gameplay is the grind and the grind is the gameplay. The goal of the developers is to make the grind enjoyable rather than having grind be a punishment to get through (or buy through) before getting to the actual gameplay. There are no gameplay behind the grind, as the grind is the end itself. I consider it to be playing warframe when I spend time on the wiki to figure out droptables or is sharking (or is getting sharked) on warframe.market.
@Adierit

I feel that the grind of Warframe is the only reason it's still got an active community after such a long period of time, everyone's dedicated so much time into achieving warframes, weapons, companions and most have fun doing grinding for resources just because of how satisfying warframe is to play because at the end of the day you're a child telepathically controlling a robotic suit with powers that let you do silly things like set every enemy around you on fire.

I like Warframe, I also like Planetside 2. Both strike me as obviously different genres, one arguably done better an more robust than the other in a myriad of ways. Planetside 2 should have taken a few pages out of other successful FPS shooters. Instead they tried to build / hype a game by investing a ton of design/promotional effort into being an esport title (nothing wrong their, just bad opening push). An imo is where it failed. Unless you're already building off an Esport FPS franchise title you're going to be hard pressed launch with that intent (especially without a core of devs with accolades in esport building). Games kinda evolve into Esport titles on their own (league of legends, starcraft, overwatch, CS) accolades based on mechanics of playstyle depth an community social interactive nature. Planetside 2 feels more like a 3 way rugby game, without an actual ball in play, just the illusion of one an no real sense of accomplishment. At the very least with Planetside 1, there was a purpose to locking continents in a global strategic sense, along with sieging warpgates.. They didn't just stop cause you won an alert, you had to mobilize your team mates, formulate plans of action, socialize with your faction mates, then implement a push an spearhead breakouts. Planetside 2 could have taken many measures from its predecessor an come out swinging, would have had some strategic depth an purpose. They could have gone steps farther by implementing a crafting system for weapons an gear. Not a crafting system like Warcraft or the likes, but something more in lines with Blacklight Retribution gunsmithing an modular armor tailoring. Instead of more marginally better or worse new weapons both faction specific or not. They could have created 1 or 2 per class, an focused more on adding new modular parts to the game, an mostly more content/depth design. Give the players something they can actually invest into, their own character an play styles to complement their efforts in game, even if it's technically a meatgrinder style FPS. The more tweaks an balances in play for characters to flip back n forth with or without a player market economy adds more longevity an rewarding satisfaction for players to achieve. Arguably having played since closed beta, the game launched horribly early, where just in the last couple years the game actually feels like it's in a state that would have done much better as a launch, especially if as the OP stated in the video, put money where their mouth was in the proper marketing venues. Instead of wasting it on their demographic that was already waiting.

I think you hit the nail on the head. On the marketing front, I never saw the planetside 2 trailer. I remember hearing about Planetside (1) back in 2007 from a classmate, and the idea of a FPS MMO didn't make any sense to me. As an avid halo player, when planet side 2 came out i was incredibly excited, but then i played it, and the game never gave me a direction to do anything, i just got lost, and was stomped by some players who had 1000s of hours. I tried to play it for like 10 hours but couldn't get into it. While warframe was confusing and yes i didn't realize you earned MR by leveling weapons for like 3 months, but the gameplay was rewarding and the modding was enjoyable and something to grind for. It's ended up being the most played game for me, with 400+ hours on ps4, and 250+ on pc, and i'm practically a scrub still, which is insane, and one important factor of warframe is the fact that the community is quite nice and helpful in the beginning where almost everyone is down to help a scrub for the sheer fact... they can. It's quite nice

My two favorite games of all time (Except Firefall rip) got compared and I sadly agree. Planetside 2, although fun, just didn't have the connections to the community or the lore in place to draw us in. It took me playing planetside 1 to fully understand each faction and even then it wasn't all there. I actually did quit warframe for a very long time and came back to a different game which I enjoyed. Planetside 2 even after the new critical mass update is still the same game it was back when I played it but with a different set of rules. I enjoyed both games and I must admit this video did a good job explaining both games and their characteristics.

I've played warframe for, like.. 50 days and I think my new player experience went pretty smootly. I mean, the game teaches you the basic movement (bullet jump), and at the very beginning you unlock new functions at your ship. That said, if you were paying atention while doing so, you wouldn't need to ask in chat where is the arsenal. Then you get to the solar system map, where if you read the mission descriptions you will eventually find that you need to unlock the next planets, and you have no idea what is a relic. But you read that you unlock some relic thing at the ship when unlocked mars at the junction description. Things that I think that could be improved: - the game could tell you that the ESC menu is a thing (for doing game stuff) not only for settings - The market, could be a little bit more present. Like a BIG SHINY board saying "here is the market. Blueprints costs credits, weapons "ready" costs plat, cosmetics costs plat". - Saying what is an eximus enemy. When I got to the junction I already had this completed, but no idea how. And seeing how common is to ppl ask in chat about, I guess it could have been explained. That said, you will not be an walking wika of warframe in 7 days. I only learnt how to properly use the bullet jump at the lv (9 or 8 i can't really remember it) mastery test, that was proving itself impossible until I realised that: I should aim up BEFORE doing the bullet thing to go MUCH higher. But the thing is, that wasn't a majoritary problem. Certainly, is much better now that I know. But that didn't ruinned, or affected my gameplay at all, by not knowing.

I really want a game that’s like Planet Side, I keep throwing around an idea of a game that is very much like it, but until now I forgot what Planet Side 2 was. I want to have a game with huge battles, like BF1 Operations, but bigger, and, like in Planet Side, you take these locations for the opposing team. But it needs to be done better. My idea was like a WWII setting, and every “season” the map re-sets, starting with the D-Day invasion, and the players have to push across Europe.

17.5 mins in and it looks to me as though what PS2 suffered more than anything was the improper management of funds, improper management of community, and the lack of a new player experience. Such a shame. Edit* So, on top of that, there's a lack of communication from the devs... on almost every front. We don't know whether or not they're listening, and we don't really even see that they care.

Whilst I don't play, it's good to hear a behemoth like LoL minimise/eliminate external pay to win mechanics from the core game

Yes that is why I picked League as a case study because riot obviously feels the same way.

Not even 20 seconds in. Talking about Warframe and Planetside 2, two games I love, and using an EVE Online song in the background, a game I also love. holy shit I don't think you can do more to make me eager to hear what you have to say! :D

Even though Planet Side 2 is declining in numbers on all platforms, it's still something to look into. I think just researching the lore in PS2 is something us nerds can really enjoy. Whether it be choosing a faction, or just reading for fun. I definitely advise new players to read up about PS2. Even if it's just looking up how to do things. It's time consuming, but in my opinion, it's so worth it! Even though they couldn't afford lore in the game, it's so great that the community of Planet Side 2 came together to put in the pieces to the puzzle. This game most certainly has a place in my heart.

Actually at a point in time far in the past, in Warframe's beta, it was so unpolished at that point they didnt have enough money to continue developing the game so they had to release a Founder Pack to get players to buy packs of like $30-250 (yes $250) in order to raise funds in exchange for Founder specific ingame items, and imo, these Founders funded Warframe to allow it to develop into the game it is today

That is really awesome, that the players got to save the game.

Yong Rui Tan I heard about that before. People say that the game was pretty bad in its beginning stages, and having played the game 4 years in the past I can confirm this is somewhat true.

For new player experience I would recommend doing what bioshock (i think bioshock) did and increase damage for new players ,up to a rank this will keep them and won't be abused because by then they would have brought items and stuff and won't want to lose that .

I'm a warframe player and somehow I need to pause the video and comment *warframe has the most or one of the most unfriendly environment for a new player* you don't have to be a veteran to know this .. You don't get guidance after you finished the first quest and like me players will set the goals for themselves and progress through the game but information is heavily scarce inside the game luckily the developers assigned websites (official one) for the game besides the new player experience and some existing issues rn warframe gets the job done.

If you think the Warframe new player experience is bad, go try Planetside. :) Warframe babies you compared to PS2.

I won't argue who's new player experience is the most unforgiving but I'll say that warframe has that problem and btw if you ask the credibility of this issue I guess I can just point out to the warframe youtubers comment section who's flooded with questions about getting through the game after the first quest or planet. This problem didn't quite get the attention until Digital Extremes released the Open world-ish expansion for the game and some other stockpile of systems that are not introduced properly, not explained properly and not connected to the things that can maybe lead to a better guidance for a new player. If you ask me why I think that warframe have an unfriendly new player experience, well that's because I experienced it myself and in addition to that Rebbecca Ford one of the community manager of the game stated that "the new player experience is really unfriendly" when interviewed in pax Australia by a KZitem partner. This might not be a problem to some players but other new comers can't adapt fast enough to the learning curve.

Cyrious Gaming planet side 2 is one of the games I considered playing before I hopped into blade and soul and last thing I know that a player should know is the faction or server etc they have to join since it can affect the progression. Aside from that can you name the aspects that makes the new player experience in ps2 worse than that of warframe. I'm not asking for comparison but just a general list of things I have to do.

You did a great job at the "investor relations" Margaret. When revenues shrink its understandable that they have to shrink the teams working on the title. But that also means the remaining members on the teams have to pick up the slack for what was lost. That just didn't really happen. Hope you find another great title to work on!

I’m new to war frame and I think it’s because war frame is designed with gamers in mind and they don’t hard sell anything and people love that and will naturally play a game that delivers great content and eventually invest financially out of gratitude

"You have to buy runes, glyps and seals In LoL" dude that system hasn't been a thing for years. "Players are not on the same level mechanically so you still have to grind" First that's another topic entirely that you're trying to mix in, and second, well, that's called a skill ceiling, and it's particularly good for games to have. If a pro player creates a lvl 1 account he will not only be on the same footing stat-wise as the rest of us, but likely win every time. I call bs on this needless dissing, it is a good system to avoid p2w, no questions asked. Warframe is good as well since while there are mods and stuff, you don't need them and after a point everything is a sidegrade, and farming is an enjoyable part of a game instead of a barrier like PS2.

Infantry wise planetside does great, vehicle wise it’s harder to get into. If you want to tank competitively you need ap, max reload, and a good top gun so you can out dps others when you’re fighting and get a gunner more often. If you’re an esf you need hover airframe. You won’t be told how to get into these things, you just have to figure it out. I enjoy the game now that I figured those things out but when you start off infantry and you try to get into armor or air without knowing what you’re doing you’re going to get slapped, especially with air.
