Autonomy! I got a Rolling Stones mouth tattoo, when I was 19, after I fell in Iove with the album: Tattoo You… how ironic! Grew up religiously and I was the first kid and 2nd grandkid to get a tattoo. It’s able to be hidden. I’d get another one, but I’m not moved to get another of anything. Costs money. And- the people I know that have LOTS, it’s usually when they are going through something tough EMOTIONALLY and that was their way of getting the pain out. I nearly passed out with mine, so - I dunno.

Wow. Can’t wait to read your research. Qualitative? Quant? Mixed? (I’m a PhD research nerd so pardon the questions-haha). I got my first tattoo this year. It’s in my handwriting and looks like I wrote a note to self on my wrist. It’s a reminder to step into my personal autonomy when I am in situations where I tend to shrink. And I absolutely acknowledge that unencumbered self notion because I am at the age where I’m unraveling all of those early conditioned messages around bodies and autonomy.

My first tattoo was definitely a declaration of my independence. I got it (secretly) at 17. But it also is a matching tattoo with my sister, so also a form of self-expression.

Also will note my sister was 16, so I'd say she most likely had the same motivations

Late post...I'm going to reference one of my favorite 'old school' drug and alcohol counselors, Michael Johnson, who has a fantastic 'VHS' film, Set-Up For Relapse; if anyone can find it or afford it on one of the old FMS productions links. As a person in long-term recovery from a lot of addictions myself and working as an Art Therapist and Drug and Alcohol counselor, I can attest from one of Michael Johnson's old presentations, where he described the time-line of United States, from 1930s up to...year 2000s, he'd said that from 1990-2000s tattoos and piercings went off the charts in the United States. In other cultures and countries, scarifications and tattoos are more ritualistic for various reasons. But given the history of United States, it's become a form of self-mutilation. I'd witnessed this in my undergraduate days while one of my classmates said he'd first self-harmed, cut himself, at age 2, because of past trauma issues. By the time I'd met him in college, he'd taken the cutting to another level with both scarifications and tattoos. According to presentation with Michael Johnson, 1990s-2000s was politically during Regan administrations, i.e. "just say no" to drugs and the complex biosocial, biochemical, stressors of life and ones upbringing. 1990s-2000 was also when violence and incarceration hit the roof in the United States, and combine that with the introduction and mass increase of both crack and crank. From the context of someone in long-term recovery, born in the 70s during disco day care era, and being a SUD counselor, I'd say people born into the era of early 90s were needing attention and validation more than ever. In 30-40s, you could set your watch when dad came home and our asses were at home and off the streets by the time the sun came down. People often dropped out of school to join the military or to work. In 50-60s is when divorce rates went off the charts with combination of cultural revolution, sexual revolution, women's liberation movement. 50s-60s women didn't need men like they did in the 30s. You were lucky if you were fed food from a microwave. Both parents are out doing independent work and working out. In 70-80s, you were lucky if you were fed at all. Relationship with people were associated with money, power, status and primary focus was on sensation seeking and acquisition of things aka disposable era. In 1990-2000s, counselors walk around like an idealist trying to help others understand that they might live to be 30 years old while there's more despair and hopelessness with violence and incarceration. What we got as a 'family' in the 30s was dinner at home and prayers at the table, while 'family' in 1990s was from institutions. I'd say 2000-2010 became the 'era of loneliness' with drastic increase in social media and disconnections associated with that. As we know, opposite of addiction is connection. And I could go on and on about this...This is why I'd say people started getting tattoos and more of them, especially after the 90s.

I got a tattoo to cover up a surgery scar . I was obese all my life, lost weight , had loose skin , got it removed and ended up with a scar , i just couldnt deal with the scar after i did all that to lose weight . So i got a tattoo to cover it up because looking at the tattoo instead of a massive scar was the less ugly option .

My first tattoo was gotten as an act of blatant rebellion as a teen. Over the years, it became , therapeutic. I survived myself--several times. During a very depressed time of my life, I began getting more tattoos as a form of release. I was able to focus on the pain of them healing in lieu of me facing the internal healing that I was not dealing with. Fast forward to my 40s, I continue to get tattoos as a way of expressing myself. They are the roadmap of my life...love, pain, highs, lows and all the emotions one can feel. The journey continues...

I got two tattoo's done. Both were memorial tattoo's I had done for my German Shepherd, Obi-Wan Kenobi (yes, really! 😅) I had a paw print tattoo done on my chest. I designed it myself and made a template for the tattooist, so I actually have Obi-wan's name and dates of his life in my own handwriting. I also had some of his ashes put into the ink. Then a year later I had a big portrait of him, done on my back. Both were done purely for myself because I was absolutely heartbroken when I lost him very suddenly to the most aggressive cancer he could have possibly gotten. Hope this helps. Good luck with your paper!

I’m going to answer something you didn’t ask: Why I didn’t get one. 1. I can see myself old, and it wouldn’t look pretty. 2. I see my future self; and know that whatever seems fun to ink on my body today might not be something I’d love tomorrow. 3. My parents told me never, ever, to get one. (I did the navel piercing instead.)
