It makes a lot of sense that they would make live action remakes of movies that did not perform originally but now have a huge cult following like atlantis or treasure planet. Atlantis could even work with a modern take and it was already diverse and had strong female characters. THE BLACK CAULDRON is a film that really should be remade in live action. I've always thought of it as a groundbreaking film for Disney because by making it they were obviously trying to update their image for the "sword-and-sorcery" 1980s craze, giving us something more like "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" than their traditional fairy tales. I want to see a new version of it not only for the '80s nostalgia alone, but because the original deserves more recognition for how radical (for Disney) it was in its day.

I didn’t really mind because the remakes were balanced by beautifully crafted movies that even at their weakest, were trying a lot of new things and had interesting things to say. They were really good films that were put together with love and care and had a lot of spark. Nowadays it’s just like let’s do this remake and this remake and this remake and this sequel and even when they do have an original movie like Encanto, Elemental or Turning Red, they get drowned out by all of the bullshit remakes that have become even more lazy and pandering as time has gone on. my biggest issue with the live action remakes is 2 points, both mostly to do with the music 1. they ruined the musical theatre nature of many of their stories as they were originally designed with the music in mind first and by changing the story/structure but not changing the music to fit properly it loses the rhythm that makes it feel like a Disney Musical, which is why the musical numbers in the remakes tend to feel off or out of place 2. while in the case of the remakes that removed the music, they failed to replace the musical numbers with equally compelling character moments that drive the narrative forward which is what musical numbers in the Disney Musicals were for

The live actions remakes have been around since 1994 with The Jungle Book remake(not to be confused with the 90s one). However many of the shady business practices and live action remakes are why people and even fans are turning their backs against Disney. Instead of letting these unnecessary reimaginings die out, people keep seeing them and the company's lukewarm sequels(Ralph Breaks The Internet & Frozen 2) because of they and Disney's unbreakable connection. The more a former shell of a renowned animation classic earns more than a million dollars at the box office, the more likely this shit keeps going; akin to a steam machine churning out stuff people wouldn't like, but with race and gender themes being the main concern for the directors, actors, or writers(same goes with the Primos debacle or Proud Family reboot). I can see why Disney lost a ton of money and decided to pull a Netflix or Warner Bros Discovery on their Disney+ library, they should really try to have original content to appeal towards many again, and besides, I have just the show geared towards an adult audience(TV-MA to be precise) with a talented video game studio like Capcom to boot. On the other hand, I do hope the Hercules remake makes Hades sympathetic for the correct reasons unlike other villains in these movies, in accurate representation, Hades was the most sane out of the gods in Greek mythology, whereas Zeus was a prick who abused women, forced Prometheus and Siciphyus to suffer, and even rejected his own son Herc. God of War(prior to the Norse era) already accurately portrayed Greek mythology before, so why not Disney in their Hercules remake?

@strategicperson95

That's different actually, and ironically both the live action remakes and Disney+ killed that strategy. This Strategy was called "The Disney Vault" which of course was rereleasing a classic Disney film in theaters and stores for a limited time before putting them back in the figurative Vault. However with ever major studio jumping into the Streaming Wars, they actually killed off their earnings from DVD and Blu-ray sales since they get thrown on their respective Streaming Services very soon after theatrical releases (if they get them) just to add content and hope someone comes to subscribe to their streaming service for short-term gains. If this is suppose to be an evolution, it's a dead end one that justify the use of the "upgrade meme".

Very simple really, it's not about money...mostly. Disney has been getting more political over the past few years, emphasizing their focus on modern ideologies, disregarding talents or creativeness. Many who were hired don't have the skillsets, those who do slowly left the place or have their voices ignored. It's not a quick process, the effect of it isn't clear till later on, some of the first remakes are still quite good. Later when more incompetent people were put in charge the quality suffers. And what should they do now? Can't just say they suck at the job. *Ding* The idea of remake series is formed. It's basically just redo the old thing but slap new graphics, new actors and voilà it's a totally 'new' movie, how hard can it be. Like copying your friend's homework with some changed words when you can't do the task. It's also backed up by the fact that genuinely new movies were also bad to mediocre, so it's not like remakes are the only crap that comes out of Disney. To sum up it's not likely that remakes are gonna stop, it's a fairly easy solution to their current problem, till Disney starts firing incapable employees or hiring good ones.
@d4dr4g0n

I don’t think they are able to stop or remove the inept leaders/employees. As you’ve mentioned, they’ve gotten political. They can’t admit incompetence whether to the public or themselves. It’s everyone else’s fault. It’s looking like the hill they will die on too.

I don’t know what you are talking about. “Man” is clearly the greatest Disney villain ever. The way he held his rifle and peered through his scope, taking a breath as he pulled the trigger that would end Bambi’s mom, the way he had no remorse, it’s very powerful writing. I, for one, am looking forward to the horrors “Man” will commit in the remake. He might even step out of his comfort zone and try to shoot Bambi’s father. It would bring something new and fresh to the movie, and Bambi would have to grow up knowing this vile man ruined his life, basically forever.

The simple solution is don't pay to watch these live action retreads in theaters. Instead, watch original films like Elemental or Oppenheimer. I remember when Animat did a countdown of the worst live action films based on a cartoon. And this was before the current Disney live action remake craze. The unfortunate thing though, is that it is working out great financially for Disney, while pretty much failed for the other studios for the most part. That's probably why we never got a live action Jetsons movie, which I am thankful for.

I know it's not a remake of an animated classic, but it is the conclusion of the Indiana Jones films, which I really like (except Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and maybe Temple of Doom) One part of my brain is telling me yes because it is an Indiana Jones film and because of Harrison Ford coming back for one last hurrah, while the other part of my brain is telling me no because of the film's negative critical reception and because I have Disney+ and can wait for the film to come to the service. It’s not bad AT all. It’s different and different is not inherently “bad” and while different is not always “better” either, that doesn’t make it wrong, incorrect, or a failure. I feel like had the Little Mermaid 2023 existed in a world outside of nostalgia, racism, and the hypercriticism of the two combined, it would be regarded very differently. A lot of these remakes are actually really good films. Cinderella especially. And I find it interesting that lately people have a lot of good to say about it now, when at the time, people hated it and trashed the same way they’re doing these other live actions. Same with the 2003 Peter Pan vs 2023 Peter Pan. People need to really learn how to sit down, shut up, and learn to enjoy the fucking movies.
