I like to go to thrift stores a lot, and I'll often purchase old consoles i come across them. I test them, repair them if i can, and sell them, rarely ever making more than 20 dollars. I've even sold some at a loss if repair costs are high. I do this because im passionate about game preservation and accessibility. It disgusts me how people like this are taking advantage of people. I also have bought consoles off ebay and other websites, and had not once had an encounter with a dishonest seller. They usually list if something is wrong with it. I recently purchased a wavebird from DKOldies. It was my first purchase from them and I was unaware of the controversy, but was shocked by the state it was in when it arrived. I was told it was “refurbished”, but the joysticks were worn and were clearly not replaced, the “handles” of the controller had a weird sticky film I needed to take a Clorox wipe to, and one of the triggers had brown grime at the base. I ended up taking the thing apart and cleaning the pieces and board because I was so grossed out by that brown grime. But even still, the joysticks were super worn. I ended up buying replacements for those too to help it feel “new” again. The fact that I needed to put so much extra effort (and expense) after purchasing an already expensive product completely soured my experience with the company. I wouldn’t touch them with a 10-foot pole, and this video helps validate my experience with them. They literally offered me like $90 for the lot of them, and said that if I took credit, I think it was around $110 or $120. But that one game they would have turned around and flipped for $500 dollars. So I said no deal. Put my stuff up on Craigslist, and I got $500 out of all of it, from one single buyer. He bought the entire lot. I went showed him the goods, and boom, I had Christmas money for my kids. What was I really gonna buy with $90 for 3 kids? Not a darn thing. But with $500 it was fair. He found the rare game he was looking for, and some extras, and I got Christmas. We both had a good Christmas with fair deals, and D.k. Poopies will never get my attention ever again, after knowing they were gonna rip me off, and sell my stuff for 10 times, if not more, than what they were gonna give me!! So yeah they can kick rocks imo!

I really do miss the years of 2014-2017 in terms of retro video game collecting since that’s when it peaked in my opinion, I would go to the flea market’s every weekend with my dad and find old gems for the SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, N64, PSX and 360 for some of the best prices I’ve seen in a while at that time and it was just a joy for me to bring them home and play them and brag to my buddies at school about them who also enjoyed the same collecting passion as me. Now since grading and stores like DKoldies have hit the market, it’s not fun to buy Dreamcast games anymore since they’ve doubled in price and you almost have to take out a loan just to get such things in your collections. I miss when things used to be better, and god knows we’re not going back to that period of bliss any time soon or maybe even ever.

At that same stand, I believe my brother got a complete copy of "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" for the same price (granted, it was "Player's Choice", but still). And the last thing I remember buying from that stand was a Game Boy Color for $25. Those days are gone now...

10 year eBay game + console seller here with 5000+ confirmed purchases and 99.7% rating. I would never order from DK Oldies. I believe that their consoles are mostly not cleaned inside, but they are claiming to be working on this. They claim now you don't have to worry about the warranty if you take off the sticker. The prices are too high. But I will say, I UNDERSTAND why the prices are higher than the rest of the market, as I started and failed to open my own video game store. It's a totally different scenario if you are joe sixpack selling your 3DS you found in the basement. You take a few pics, spend 20 mins on an ad, ship when payment arrives. When you have a brick and mortar store, rent, utilities, shipping, upkeep, parking lot, business license, employees, employee healthcare, furnishings, etc. etc. etc. It makes sense why they would have to charge more, for the overhead. Their reasoning being that yeah it's more, but you have a place you can turn to when the 30 year old electronics they sold you suddenly fail. Like Grishuh said, it's found a market for people too scared to use eBay, and not wanting to get up early to go to garage sales and flea markets to hopefully get lucky and find exactly what you were looking for. For those prices though and that staff you would hope they would at least open up every console.
