WHY DO DOGS HOWL?
So even though dogs have been domesticated from wolves more than 15,000 years ago, dogs still carry wolf instincts and behaviors and howling is one of them and that means dogs may howl for the same reasons a wolf would howl.
OK, so no matter the breed, age or temperament, all dogs howl! Some breeds that howl more than others include the Dachshunds, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, Huskies, American Eskimos and Malamutes.
1. So just like Wolves, Dogs howl as a way of communication. Howling sounds let pack members know what direction they are in and depending on the pitch reached, about how far away they may be. And for domesticated, loyal and loving, dogs, you and your family are their pack that they are comfortable communicating with.
A howl sound can travel up to 10 miles away in open terrane, while barking sounds that are very loud, they are short and can only travel up to 2 miles. This makes howling the best way to let a member of the pack know where they are, or your dog letting you know where he is on a hike.
2. Dog howling may be a cheer of excitement when they have cornered prey in the back yard such as a squirrel or even killed a lizard they want to show you. And trained Hunting dogs are expert howlers when they have found a scent track and need to alert their owners that may be miles away.
3. Other dogs will just howl for plain attention, food or treats. They may howl sad bellows if they’re in their crate and want to come out or they may howl simply laying on couch to receive more pets.
4. Dogs howl in response to other loud pitch noises because in the wild they’re instincts are to howl back at a howl heard to let other wolves know they’re there.
5. From a veterinary view, a dog may howl if they are in pain. Dogs common howl if they are frustrated in medical situations like being unable to stand up due to a back injury, unable to defecate due to constipation or unable to see due to blindness.
6. Dogs will also Howl if they are nervous instead of excited at a stranger or dog they don’t like. Their nerves may take over them and their bark transitions to long bellowing howl sounds.
