Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established in the United States early in the 19th century, to provide undergraduate and graduate level educational opportunities to people of African descent. Black students were unwelcome at existing public and private institutions of higher education (IHEs), even after the passing of specific legislation, resulting in a lack of higher education opportunities.

HBCUs have always struggled to receive adequate, equitable funding-including the funding due to them by law-and that struggle continues today. For example, a recent analysis by Forbes magazine found that eighteen public land-grant HBCUs were underfunded by nearly $13 billion between 1987 and 2020, compared to the resources that their states provided predominantly white land-grant universities.
The Charlotte Hornets hosted HBCU night to which an HBCU discussion panel and career fair were held. Alumni were in attendance to share information about their universities.
