I was in a very big earthquake when I was a kid and we were living on Kodiak Island, Alaska -- the Good Friday Quake of 1964. I still remember what my mother grabbed as we ran across the heaving living room floor on our way out of our apartment: she had her handbag hanging from the crook of one elbow, our dog Tippy gathered under one arm, and in her remaining hand a small creamer pitcher with a pink rose on it that had belonged to her grandmother. The little rose pitcher belongs to me now. My great grandmother (whom I never knew) is long gone, and so are my grandmother and my mother, but I can hold that little rose pitcher in my hand and in a way it's like touching my mom's hand.

I have way too many unread books in my efficiency apartment. I think of myself as a minimalist who is using up what he has. Just today a friend said that my living space is "...like a warehouse". I'm psyching myself for a book purge, something I've done in the past. Many of my books were acquired for free from Little Free Libraries and leftovers from fundraiser,and I ask myself, "Would I pay money to read this book?" If the answer is "No" that makes it easier to part with the book. Also I'm having a 6-month book fast: no new books will come into my living space unless a library book that will be returned.

I have gotten rid of so much. My house is so much easier to clean. Only one time did I miss something and it was because I accidentally got rid of it. It was a nice winter jacket that I wore a lot. When winter came this year it was nowhere to be found. I was so sad. Then one day I was at Marshalls with the intention of buying just a yoga mat for my son (long story) he has autism and keeps sleeping on the floor, but there was the coat. I literally re-bought it. The only thing I have truly missed out of thousands of things. It’s been a journey well worth taking!

When going through items I categorised as sentimental recently, I really struggled to let go. Then I asked myself why am I keeping these things? I came to the conclusion that I felt like I needed permission to let them go. I decided to give myself permission, I know the people who gave these things to me wouldn't want me to feel claustrophobic in my own room because of the amount of things I have. So I'm letting them go.

I keep picturing Joshua Becker's favorite word as a child: "Why?" Seriously it is a good question and I can see it working for many areas in my life. With the pandemic though I feel like I'm in a bit of a holding pattern for many things. For example, clothes -- I've worked from home since March 17th. Even though I dress presentably every day, it's different from what I would wear to work. I don't know what life will be like when I come out the "other side" so I don't feel I can do a clothes decluttering.

I’m feeling the same way. The usual question, Have I worn this in the last year, just doesn’t apply right now. And as you say, we’re not absolutely sure how life is going to be afterwards. I am removing a few really obvious things from my wardrobe but my seasonal purges are not happening this year.
@philipwayne7794
3 жыл бұрын
@@sheilaenglish7329 I completely agree. We are unsure of how life will be after this. Better to be safe than sorry. Removing some things is fine, and holding onto a key wardrobe that's useful should the need arise, saves money in the long run. I can't imagine a world where everyone goes back to 'work' yet we're all stuck w/ barely anything to wear (from our purging and living w/ less) and there's a sudden uptick of Fast Fashion purchases (which isn't really helpful to the environment as it is) Some people need to hang onto stuff for seasonal purposes and career/utilitarian purposes.

You may have to "peel the onion". Continue to ask "why" until you reach the core. There may be a genuin and positive intention why you love a certain item, that actually makes it worth keeping. Even though there's no objective need for it. I'm a long distance hiker and carrying all your current belongings on your back teaches you exactly how little you need to survived. But even then, you often carry some little extra, a luxury item. It's something that adds something extra, weather it's comfort, entertainment or just a nice emotion. And that's true for life. Of course your can keep things you love, if it actually brings more joy than the cost of owning it. If you keep asking yourself why, you'll find the answer that's true for you.

While minimalist-ism can turn people into a compulsive declutter, where decluttering boost the dopamine. What I love about Joshua is things have to be intentional and have purpose and more than anything is all about control. I've come from the genetic that have tendency and craving for clutters and hoards, so Thanks to this channel I try to use my logic and rational with the cravings of owning stuffs. Though since I like doing experiment if habit can overlap genetics.

I'm going through this now, I'll try your method. I have clothes I've carried for 3 years now waiting to lose my weight so I can wear them, a lot of dress clothes, donating to a women's shelter that helps women get the clothes they need to get a job.

If each item truly benefits our life, it is good to keep. If it detracts from life, I think consideration and asking the question "why" is a great idea. I would agree with a number of comments on this site though (regarding this present time with covid-19) and the concern of getting rid of things we might eventually need. It is a time of uncertainty and I could understand why the timing may not be right for de-cluttering for those who do not feel comfortable doing so. When I asked "why", though, I can easily see that some of my possessions just need to go. The timing is right for me. Thanks. :-)

I’ve been avoiding purging the closet - thanks covid for weight gain stress. So now to lose old clothes and some weight and answer why am I eating my feelings. Hope to throw that old habit out . Comfort is a why. We surround ourselves in a familiar nest. When my daughter was young and I would try to get her to clean her room - she said I like how it feels in here. Lol now she’s pretty much a minimalist and a great house keeper.

Why is a good question, however it may prompt our brains to come up with answers to why we might need something. “Because I might go camping, because I could drop a dress size, because I’ll take up painting again...” etc. We end up justifying the choice to bring this item into our lives. In the case of stuff, I think a better question to ask might be “How does this serve me now?” For many things the answer will be that it doesn’t. So that makes the decision to eliminate it a lot easier.

Great! Video. I ask my self why do I have it? why do I want it? Will it be multipurpose so I dont have to get an additional one and do I use it every single day. If we want to look our best we can focus on our grooming and hygiene to present the best version of ourselves.

I have a number of clothing items I bought impulsively and am having a terrible time giving them away as I can't bear to think about the money I spent and wasted. I need to get past this!

You can hold onto them and beat yourself up some more, or you could call it a lesson learned, be kind to yourself and consider the price as part of the cost of your education in the school of being human. Chuck them in your box of donations and move on, wiser and happier. It's just money. A little suffering over the wasting of it is okay, if it helps you to make better choices in the future, but don't drag it around like Marley's chain of sins. The universe forgives you, and the Internet Board of Super Perfect Minimalist Judges has decided that you can keep your Minimalist Membership card, because hey, we've all bought stuff we ended up not needing, because we're humans, too.

It's been a while since I read Marie Kondo's "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" but my recollection is that Marie said something about if the purchase, the acquistion of the item, gave you pleasure then maybe the money wasn't wasted.
