Actually the italian flag colors has also another meaning, maybe most meaningful. It comes from Dante Alighieri's poem "La Divina Commedia" where Beatrice is wrapped in a GREEN-WHITE-RED dress, where GREEN stands for HOPE, WHITE stands for FAITH and RED stands for CHARITY (LOVE), which are the three theological virtues of the church. @lesscrement1448

@@Davidmuratore1 Well that's weird cause I've lived in Argentina for a few years and I'm pretty sure I've heard people say "la albiceleste" quite a few times (maybe it was used to talk specifically about the shirt, rather than the team as a whole). But yes it's true that "la seleccion" is much more common. Btw I think in Spanish you don't have a word that stands for "azure" or "azzurro". It would essentially be a light blue that's not light enough to be called cyan. I would say you normally use the word "azul" to refer to both the color blue (blu) and azure (azzurro), and then you use "celeste" to refer to cyan (celeste).

@Giorgio Royaume 2021 and 1982 blue are less different than current blue and original National soccer team blue. The original colour was very similar to the current Naples soccer team shirt. @@0810drew Of course, I can still distinguish the colors. If Italians only usually use one word for yellow, giallo, it doesnt mean they can’t distinguish different colors, or use special names for the shades if they need to. Nor would they feel handicapped by it. I’m just saying the color Italians call azzurro is typically called ‘blue’ by native English speakers, and they are neither wrong nor handicapped to do so. And of course, I’m not saying anything about how other people should use their own language, or indeed English as a foreign language. I am merely saying the Italian shirt is blue.

Italy played in blue only from its third game against Hungary, in 1911. Before that, the jersey used was white. 'Azzurro' became then the national colour of every team in every sport, except for motorsport, where red was used instead.

That's because in motorsports, originally, colors were assigned to nations and couldn't be picked. The UK was green (Aston Martin and Jaguar keep honoring that), France was blue, Italy was red and so on. That's why both Alfa Romeo and Ferrari have red as their main color.

The blu of italian national team is a particul type of blue, called "blu Savoia" ( Savoy blue), as explaine in the video to pay omage to the royal italian house. A little curiosity, in the 1935 when Italy was under fascism, the italian team were dressed in all black, because black was the color of fascism, for example the fascism militia or MVSN (Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale), wore an all black uniform for this reason they was called "camicie nere" (Blackshirts). So Italy won its second FIFA World Cup in the 1938 dressed in all black.

There's an article circulating that while the (student) Olympic Team played in black in the 1936 Berlin Olympics the full national team only ever played one game in black. In the 1938 World Cup in France, when it lost the toss against France (which is played in blue) to play in blue and was ordered to play in black instead of the traditional white change strip. It beat and knocked out France in the quarter final. The article states: "the 'manifestly hostile' crowd was silenced by a comfortable 3-1 Italian win. As the fascist daily Il Popolo d'Italia recorded, the squad pulled out its best performance of the tournament: 'It is Italy - the blue shirt with the Savoy shield and the Fascio Littorio on its chest - that has won the right to contest the final in Paris' "

Just recently they started to play with the red-white shirt as a home kit) - Japan - Ghana - Northern Ireland I think there are even more examples, but these came to my mind.

In 1366 the state of Savoy made a naval expedition against the Turkish empire. They used a "light blue" ensign (in italian "azzurra") in homage of the Virgin Mary. It became the official color for the house of Savoy (one of the oldest family in Europe, began year 1000). In 1861 the state of Savoy led Italy to its unity, creating the kingdom of italy (lasted until 1946). The Savoy light blue was kept as "national color" also with the republic (1946 - current).

@@lewiswarburton1224 the "blue" got darker at times, with lighter shades coming back in 2002 and 2009 and an unusual dark shade in 2006, but the shirts were originally azure, hence the name "azzurri". Italy squad wears blue, in italian "blu". But the name is Azzurri from the colour Azzurro, a lighter shade of what we call blue in Italy. Azzurro is the colour of a clean summer sky in Italian, in football it's the colour of a SSC Napoli shirt. the italian uniform has historically had different shades of blue, from the azzurro-blu of the 2002 world cup, to the darkest blue of italia 90. On the other hand, "Celeste" is something like azzurro fading into white, as for the SS Lazio kit, or for the Man City kit and for english speakers is sky blue, I suppose. For Italians, blue is the colour of Everton FC (and the National team, even if we call them Azzurri) kit.

The blue jersey was used first just one year later, on the 6th of January 1911, in a match against Hungary played in Milan; 2. at the poll held after WW2, in 1946, to decide the form of the Italian State, the total number of voters mounted to almost *25* *millions*. *12.7* *millions* for of the Republic, *10.7* for the Monarchy. 1.5 million votes were held as invalid.
