*Frequently Asked Questions / Comments:* *tl;dr version?* Olympic archers use a relaxed grip. The bow swings freely due to the long stabiliser rods. This is not an intentional motion, but a follow-through. *Did War Archers Drop Their Bow?* kzitem.info/news/bejne/z2h-sKuKj5lmf4I No. *Why do people shoot accurately without dropping the bow?* Different standards of accuracy. Most people who claim accuracy aren't shooting in the long-distance format that Olympic shooters compete at. Practical shooting means hitting a target. Sport shooting means hitting the dead centre of the target. *What's all the stuff on the bow?"* kzitem.info/news/bejne/tW-p0KGof6qrdag You're mostly looking at the sight and stabilisers. They offer tighter control for precision shooting. *Can you shoot accurately without them?* Yes. They're not required for shooting. However, they make a big difference. A barebow shooter typically can't compete on equal footing with a freestyle shooter. *What about Legolas/Hanzo/Robin Hood/Hawkeye?* Fictional characters can do whatever they want. *Why is the video 8 minutes long?* Answer is in the first minute; also provided here. I do tutorials on this channel with extended responses, so this shouldn't be surprising. If 8 minutes is too long, you wasted more time whinging about it. *Why is this in my recommended?* KZitem algorithm. Go figure. *Can't you just catch the bow?* The drop happens much quicker in real practice. I've slowed it down to emphasise how odd it looks to a casual viewer. With proper shot execution, the drop and swing are actually quite sudden. *Why did you add movie bow effects?* You're probably hearing the sound of the leather tab on the lapel mic. *Why isn't modern archery more exciting?* This is only one form of archery, and as a sport, it follows a common rule set so that people can participate for recreation. It's not everyone's idea of fun, but neither is golf. *How would this be practical in war?* It wouldn't be.

Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine kzitem.infoUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

Yeah, now I know why my dad taught me not to grip a bow. Never explained it to me, and I never asked.
@icetiger-4760
3 жыл бұрын
When I learned archery, I was taught the “swordsman grip” It earned this name because swordsman developed the grip style for fluid movements between cuts. The jist of the grip is you keep your fingers relaxed, cradling the bow, and lock your arm so that the tension from the draw keeps the bow in your hand. A simple way to describe how my hand held the bow, thumb relaxed, forefinger and middle finger are relaxed and nowhere near gripping the bow, point at the target with them, and ring and pinky finger are the only ones that can touch the bow, they are there to gently keep the bow in hand once loosed. After you fire the bow will tilt forward a bit and if you relax your arm and have your hand relaxed it will basically rock forward into a secure grip. Not quite dropping it like Olympic archers but very similar method of operation. The precision comes from a relaxed grip and a deep breath. Don’t strangle your bow. Cradle it in your palm.

@@Scientificmethods okay maybe lock is the wrong word, but it conveys the right point, the force should be through your bones not your muscles. I hunted with compound bows up until a few years ago. No one I knew used slings, but we did use trigger draw releases. When I did, the technique I was taught was to just secure the bow with my index finger so that I wouldnt drop it and it wouldn't fly out once the arrow released. You'd want to open your hand like you showed once it was drawn or while drawing so the bow went to its "natural position". Then you wanted to get a finger around it without adjusting its position in the hand. Then the others dont really touch the bow but are cupped and floating off it and just catch the bow by closing once the arrow is clear, which you kinda just feel. This is our solution to the problem without using a sling. I know there are lots of different bows and archery techniques out there, though, so this is cool to learn.

@@jeffthepatato2277 I know guys who hunt with longbows and recurves they have made themselves. They do the same. I also shot recurve with the boyscouts, and it is the same. The general idea of it is that you hold onto the weapon. This is because not all archers today nor throughout history used a sling with recurve bows and it is a general technique used with all bows because you don't want to torque the bow.

Interesting to hear an explanation about this practice, I do traditional archery with an English Longbow #50@28, shooting off the hand and it's almost impossible to do this and while you don't "death grip" the bow, you do have to hold it. I've always thought it looked silly, thanks for explaining it's purpose.
@tesstickle7267
6 жыл бұрын
Hart it does look silly lol I prefer to stick with what the English did for example,be the most effective killers you can be(im targets only of course,never animals!) They would grip their bows, and even have the arrow on the other side. Also it was law in England to practice every Sunday haha archers, especially those with long bows will start growing a bigger shoulder and such so be aware of that
@rshaart4810
6 жыл бұрын
yeah, after 5 years of shooting I've noticed an asymmetry between my shoulders, the other thing about english archers, at least where warbows/artillery bows are concerned, you'd be wearing a thick full sleeve gambeson so you could afford to draw straight a little more rather than crooking your arm as much as we do for target shooting.

Wow, interesting. The fun part is, that I had a bow as a kid. Not a serious thing but also not exactly a toy. And after some time I figured that i got better accuracy by NOT holding the bow firmly and at the end I did as the video described ... not really holding the bow. Back then I thought I was doing it wrong because it looked kinda silly. So it took me almost50 years until today to figure why I got better results with my "silly" holding-method.

Oh man, the sound of that bow's groan is amazing and something I couldn't hear in your old videos. It feels so alive now. I didn't realise modern carbon bows groaned in a similar fashion to us traditional/historical bow folks. Did your bow always make that noise, or is it a finger tab or microphone directionality thing? My traditional wood laminate bows groan ever so slightly when drawn, a friend's horn composite bow groans quite loudly, but neither are anywhere near as loud as what I heard in this video.

There's a similarity of shooting a bow and riding a motorcycle. It's the relaxed grip. We put no pressure on the bow and we put no pressure on the handle bars for the same principal. A tight grip ruins good performance. An interesting parallel. A very nice video. Thank you Nusensei.

My trainer once told me, to not grip the bow until I let my string go, and even then only sort of "catch" it with my fingers, to avoid applying pressure on the bow during the shot. That seems reasonable, right Nu?
@user-bo8yt4uc8b
7 жыл бұрын
Lucas Lorenz That is actually one bad habit many beginning archers have, and should be avoided like a plague. If you just try to catch the bow, you'll gonna start to anticipate the catching motion and your arm muscles will be in all kinds of uncontrollable tensions during the shot.
@antoniskatris1011
6 жыл бұрын
To add a bit to your answer the key problem with this habit is not just the unwanted tension. Because as you said you anticipate the shot, you might catch the bow milliseconds before actually shooting the arrow. This is causing even more inconsistencies as in some shots you catch the bow after the shot, in others before the shot and in some even between the release and the arrow clearing the bow. And even worse, because subconsciously you believe that the arrow is well clear of the bow, you might actually torque it even more than what you would do with a standard beginner death-grip. So as you said avoid this habit like the plague!

Did anyone of you ever tried to cath the bow after shooting? I understand what you want to say, but you simply hold your fingers in front of the bow and after the shot the bow hits the fingers and then you can catch it.
@user-bo8yt4uc8b
6 жыл бұрын
LockenJohny101 I have been shooting like that in the beginning. I tried not to torque the bow by keeping my fingers loose and then catching the bow after the shot. I got pretty good at it, but many times I could feel that I started the catching motion before the shot. My experience is that it can be done, but some times it will be messed up, so it is better not to do it at all. Also because it doesn’t give any additional benefits to shoot like that, there’s no reason to take the risk of bad shots caused by poorly timed bow hand actions.

Wow I have been doing archery mostly self taught for 20 years and this is the first time I have heard of the use of a finger sling to release hand tension. I agree that with most of the time with my compound bows I have never felt the need for any type of muscular or reactive follow through as the arrow seems to have hit my target before my brain or hands have anything to do with it. But it's very interesting to see this and wonder if I could improve in this way. Thanks for posting.

The simple answer is because you dont hold the bow in your hand, you hold it with the tension between the string and the riser(bow body) as you use your palm to push the riser forward. The fingers never wrap around like you are gripping the bow because that will cause your aim to fluctuate when you release the tension in the string and your bow hand adjusts to the changing forces on the riser. There is even a specific piece of equipment you wear on the bow hand to catch the bow before it falls.
