Great video, I’m a school teacher and my voice has totally gone after an episode of flu. I’ve had my voice disappear before but never for this long. I’m worried that I may have made it worse by trying to work through it when it initially happened. Thanks for the explanation of laryngitis, very useful information.

It's really tricky to rest your voice, especially if you need it for work! If your voice doesn't return even after resting it for a couple of weeks, then it might be worthwhile to check with your doctor to make sure that there isn't some other reason for your hoarse voice. I'm glad the video was helpful and I hope you get better soon :)

I’ve had a mild cough and cold like symptoms for two weeks. I work for a UK based airline and work 12 hour shifts where speaking is 99% of my job. Yesterday I woke up to my usual dry cough and continued into my day. Ten hours into a very verbal shift I started getting hoarse and raspy. By the time I got home my voice was so hoarse it was unrecognisable and by the evening I could barely produce a whisper. Home from work today and desperate to return. Lozenges, hot lemon water, etc are not even touching the problem. The cough seems to be making it worse. 😓
@DocUnlock
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricki, it sounds like you're having an absolutely terrible time. Unfortunately jobs that require a lot of talking, like working on an airline, can make the symptoms of Laryngitis even more difficult to bear. I would suggest checking in with your family doctor to make sure that your illness is indeed Laryngitis and not some other problem. If it is indeed Laryngitis, then resting your voice is going to be your best bet. Things like lozenges, lemon water etc can help some people with symptoms but unfortunately don't accelerate recovery. It sounds like these aren't working for you anyway. You may want to ask your doctor about other options for symptom relief while your immune system is doing its work. Hope you get better soon.
@rickicraven7583

DocUnlock Thank you for your reply. Today my GP prescribed steroid based nasal spray in hopes to calm the continuing dry cough which is keeping me up all night. She advised voice rest, steam, ibuprofen and paracetamol. I’m not holding out much hope on her advice speeding up the healing process. I’ll just rest my voice and try to be a patient patient. I’ve already been off work for two days. I hope this doesn’t go on for weeks. I still have zero voice.
@DocUnlock
5 жыл бұрын
'...try to be a patient patient' - I like your sense of humour! :D Luckily the natural course of Laryngitis is not too prolonged - usually about 10-14 days for your voice to come back. Maybe even sooner depending on your immune system and the amount of vocal cords swelling. Thanks for your follow up post :)

I only use it 3 or 5 days then reduce the dose and stop. This drug is not recommended at early ages however if you have a very busy life and gotta go back to uni or work in at least within a week, try it. Life saver! Or just rest up 2 3 weeks.

My throat started itching, then my nose got runny and after a day I started coughing and blowing my nose every 10 mins. I had a small fever during the first day that went away quickly, but 2 days in I started slowly losing my voice and sneezing constantly. Nasty yellowish mucus is coming out of my nose and whenever i sneeze. Today, i completely lost my voice hahaha. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 5+ years ago. I follow my treatment since then and nothing like this happened to me before so i don't think this is one of the reasons why I lost my voice.

Hi Ruhi, there are other reasons for a persisting hoarse voice eg. vocal cord polyp. If your voice is a persisting problem, your family doctor will be able to arrange for a full examination of your vocal cords. Assuming there is no medical reason for your hoarse voice, there are multiple ways to prevent vocal cord trauma for people like you who need to use their voice often. For example you can try using a small microphone and speaker system in the classroom. Also, voice therapy from a speech pathologist who is experienced in treating voice problems can help you use your voice in a healthy way (eg not speaking too loudly or softly). These are just some suggestions. You can have a look at this website for more information: www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/taking-care-your-voice

I Almost Lost My Voice Singing So Loud And I’m Worried That I Won’t Have A Voice. Thank God I Am Not In School Right Now Because If I Did Lose My Voice I Would Stay Home From School And Try To Get Better. But I Have Been At Home Resting.😰😰😰😰😰

Ok now explain why smoking and stuff changes your voice over time. And also how singers can manage using high pitch and loud sounds and not losing their voice. If I even try to be loud I always lose my voice.

It’s been about 14 days and my lower regular talking voice has returned, it’s my higher singing voice that worried about, if my regular talking voice came back, should I start talking again, or should I wait until I’m able to sing clearly again?

But if the vocal cords are swelled how does the air go though (if it is coming out as just air and not viice..) Does that mean there is just a little space between the two cords?

😢😢 That sucks! I found this video cuz I've actually lost my voice completely for the first time in my life, and it's really hard to deal with for days. I wanted to ask (if you don't mind) if you're feeling better now, and if so how long it took for the laryngitis to blow over. Thanks!
