On my Dan certificates it is written "Karate-Jutsu". Being able to fight in order to not having to fight... The highest form of Karate. From what I have learned so far: those who know how to fight, have the least desire to actually fight.

Why do I train? Because I love forms. I live for forms. On a practical side, forms are great for developing hand speed. I cannot stress enough how good forms are for developing hand speed.

“If you do hard things, and you come out the other end, you’re going to have more value in everyday life.” Love it man, great video. My impression is that it was Itosu teaching in the Okinawan school system in 1905 that was the real turning point. That was the version of the art that spread across the world. What came before that was practiced by a small number of nobles that had recently lost their social status with the abolishment of the caste system. This new version of the art was already more prevalent before it spread to mainland Japan, the changes occurred in Okinawa itself. I think that goes a long way in explaining the current state of things, where we really can’t say much for certain about what the art was originally like.

I think most of us train for a few reasons. Exercise, self improvement, artistry, the people you train with, because it's cool, etc. Most of us don't plan on fighting, and hopefully will never need it in a real fight, but I think being prepared for a fight is something a responsible person does.

Modernisation of karate was converted from jutsu to do. It's been a challenge to adapt to jutsu however I was focused less on budo. Mostly karate of today is focused on aesthetic appeal. Personally I would focus on jutsu .

In my experience, the difference between justu and Do is the guiding principles. Jutsu is only focused on combat effectiveness. While true Do not only focuses on combat effectiveness, but also seeks to guide the use of the martial prowess to some perceived higher purpose. The practice of the martial arts is arguably a greater detriment to personal development than those who don’t practice it. It’s probably why there has been a great effort to neuter the expressions of karatecas, and our personal ability to limit our damage on society by placing expectations of never engaging. Many like to use the approach of self defense or survival, but the will to survive is nothing special. To sacrifice ourselves for the sake of others or to establish justice? That is something else. Some quotes to consider: “The wise warlord doesn’t simply think in terms of the benefit of his own nation. He also thinks about the benefit of the conquered people. If you do not understand this? Then perhaps you are just a barbarian.” -Sun Tzu, The Art of War “It is foolish to think that the martial arts is simply about killing. It is not about killing. It is about the killing of evil of one man that thousands may live.” -Yagyu Munanori, The Life Giving Sword 1 Maccabees 3:18-19 18 Then Judas said, “It is easy to hem in many at the hands of a few, and it makes no difference before heaven to save with many or with few. 19 For victory in battle does not come from the size of the army, but from the might of heaven.

On the note of bad apples, sometimes it on the instructor to turn away the habitual person who doesn’t represent the expected qualities. Granted some people slip and can be redeemed but at some point they must be turned away.

The Karate public as a whole needs to get back to learning how to fight as the priority and not winning WKF tournaments.

I actually don't believe it was originally a "civilian" art because it was based in war wrestling. I think it became known as a "civilian" art because of the empty hand strikes. Most folk wrestling traditions are based in that culture's war wrestling, and war wrestling is always minimalistic on the ground, because the ground is the last place you want to be on a battlefield, which is why most of those arts' sport version emphasizes putting your opponent on the ground while you stay standing. Most soldiers learned weapons *first* and foremost, so wrestling plus weapons was the go-to skillset in a *war*. When you are a civilian back home on the street in town, where is your spear? Where is your sword? It has to be your hands and feet, so karate is war wrestling plus your "swords".
