That one rock is more important to the Doctor's character development than some companions

As are Ian and Barbara! Without them shaping the Doctor into a better Time Lord and hero we wouldn’t have The Doctor we have today!💙💙🔷

@@stephensheridan1279 Of course! In my head, there are 2 moments that force the Doctor to be better. One is the moment Ian stops him from using the rock. The other is when he apologizes to Barbara in "The Edge of Destruction".

The thing with Doctor Who character piece stories is that for some reason the fan base buy and large doesn't like them which I never understood. To this day Boom Town is still my favorite 9th doctor episode.

Its so easy to dismiss something as "filler" if nothing physically happens in a given story, even if a full character arc occurs.

Nah I watched An Unearthly Child as a kid, maybe 9 or 10, and I was hooked all the way through the 100,000 BC episodes, by which I mean utterly terrified. This is what good children's media does. Genuinely tragic it won't be available easily.

I've recently started my pilgrimage through the entirety of Doctor Who, and while it isn't my favorite story, I do appreciate An Unearthly Child for what it does and what it sets up for this era of Who.

I would argue that the entire first three stories make up one whole beginning, and that your 'You can't have Heaven Sent without Hell Bent' argument works for the whole first three stories in my opinion

Sometimes I forget you have a face Sam! It truly is remarkable just how perfect the first episode of this show is. The pacing holds up incredibly well, as do the characters and intrigue. It seems as though every right decision was made during the making of the first episode. The choice to follow Ian and Barbara, not the Doctor, to create the intrigue and mystery, just as the new series would do time and time again 40 years later. The choice to have the Doctor and Susan remain a mystery to keep the audience hooked. The choice to do something a little different and have the TARDIS be bigger on the inside. The choice to have Ian and Barbara be science and history teachers, respectively, so they can offer insight and ask the right questions as the TARDIS explores both time and space. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the production is that they managed it all on a tiny budget in a tiny room with everything working against them. They had all the right ideas, and every one of which was executed perfectly, allowing the show to last another 60+ years. It's possibly one of the very best episodes of the show. It's just a shame that the following three episodes have aged far more poorly by comparison. That being said, I do agree that episodes 2-4 get a lot more flak than they deserve. While the plot itself is nothing to shout home about, this is where we learn more about each of our protagonists and their personalities, and see them establish a group dynamic. It has the Doctor be a cold and antagonistic figure, which gives him room to grow into the lovable, yet commanding figure that we come to know over the span of his run. William Russell makes a good point in the commentary that if they had started with a story like The Daleks, we would have focused more on the mechanics than on the characters, which I think I agree with and makes me appreciate the episodes a little more. But that isn't to say these episodes are good, just better than some let on.

"deranged old bigot" You have ZERO clue about this man. And no, someone doing something you dislike isn't justification for that. The BBC is worth 5 billion annually. So, 20K offered would've been seen as insult to his Father. He IS protecting his legacy. I find it odd Doctor Who fans are against him and NOT the BBC. The way Ste has described the BBC's actions towards his late Father, sounds sadly, the same as how the BBC has treated Doctor Who since the mid 80s? This ENTIRE situation is due to a legacy of ill will created by the BBC. And, Ste, is NOT the only one to feel this way towards the BBC. Remember Colin Baker? However, I think they should remember that they need to create NEW fans. And these episodes are a great way to enable that. We don't want to hurt those who haven't had the chance to even see them. At the end of the day, these episodes and any making of Doctor Who, or it's merchandise, involves making up contracts and payments. It IS NOT about who's the good or bad guy. I am ON Ste's side because the BBC are being greedy in giving him so little. But, on the other hand it harms the overall brand. THEY MUST find a way to come to an agreement, with both sides happy, which benefits everyone. But, in the 60th year, it is VERY sad they have allowed it to come to this. We should stop attacking people when we ARE NOT the ones involved in this. But, all I can do is put my point across. Happy Birthday Doctor Who! David

WHY can't they offer more@@najawin8348? Well, I stand corrected. Although, to be fair to me I'm not Ste. And, let's be honest, based on his words - he sounds like the kind of person who wouldn't accept that - even if it was mandated by the rules? In that case, he's being a fool. If there's ZERO chance of a higher offer, then not accepting it, is shooting himself in the foot? David
